The conversation begins on paying for a jail upgrade

Geary County Commissioners recently received an estimate of about $29 million to renovate the county detention center. Building a new jail was another option.

During a joint meeting with the Geary County Public Building Commission Monday  the governing body discussed potential options to pay for a project including general obligation bonds that might have to go to an election, G.O. bonds which could be retired by sales tax revenues, OR having the Public Building Commission handle the project and seeking personnel efficiencies with jail operations.

Commissioner Trish Giordano does believe a jail upgrade is needed but the Sheriff's Department will have to tighten their expenditures if a jail is going to be obtained.

No final decisions have been made.
