Kan. carjacking suspect shot by police remains hospitalized

SHAWNEE COUNTY – A suspect wounded in an officer involved shooting in Topeka remains hospitalized, according to the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

At around 3:10 p.m. on April 20, police received a 911 call reporting that a suspect connected to an armed carjacking that occurred in Topeka earlier in the day, was in the area of 16th and Harrison Street.

Preliminary information indicates that police responded and observed the suspect, Terrell D. Hayes-Osby, 34, of Topeka, running from police.

Officers engaged in a foot pursuit heading west on 16th St., across Topeka Blvd. During the pursuit, Hayes-Osby fired in the direction of officers. Four officers returned fire. Hayes-Osby was struck. The shooting occurred around 3:25 p.m. near 16th and Tyler Street.

Medical aid was rendered. EMS responded and transported Hayes-Osby to a local hospital. No law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.

Hayes-Osby was hospitalized in serious condition. He is improving and is expected to survive. He has previous convictions for 2nd degree murder, aggravated battery, aggravated robbery and theft, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.
