On Wednesday, 69 people on the Wheat Quality Council’s 2024 winter wheat tour made their way from Colby to Wichita, Kansas, stopping in wheat fields along six different routes.

Wednesday’s wheat tour scouts made 216 stops at wheat fields across western, central and southern Kansas, and into northern counties in Oklahoma.

The calculated yield from all cars was 42.4 bushels per acre. Scouts were able to use the late season formula provided by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service, which includes counting wheat heads, number of spikelets and kernels per spikelet. The yield formula doesn’t take disease, pests or weed pressure into consideration.

Romulo Lollato said the theme of the day was variability, even within fields. Groups saw a lot of drought stress and freeze damage, with some fields already being destroyed. Not as much stripe rust or Wheat Streak Mosaic Virus were observed on Wednesday, compared to Tuesday, likely due to drought conditions.

Farmers in the area reported that combines will probably start rolling by June 1 in south central Kansas, about seven to ten days earlier than average. There wasn’t as much fungicide applied in the southern areas of Kansas because the stripe rust started coming on in a later growth stage.

“This year is a testament to the wheat breeders and researchers and the work they’ve done,” said Derek Sawyer, who farms near McPherson. “This year, everything has been stressed across the state, but we’re still looking at a decent crop.”

Dennis Schoenhals from Oklahoma Wheat Commission reported that the state’s production was estimated at 96.2 million bushels this year, up from 68.6 million bushels last year, according to USDA’s NASS. USDA/NASS estimates the Oklahoma crop will yield 37 bushels per acre, compared with 28 last year. Harvested acres are estimated at 2.6 million acres. A tour of agronomists and others in the industry estimated the production slightly lower than the NASS estimate, at 89.3 million bushels and a yield of 33 bushels per acre. He said the Oklahoma wheat crop had good moisture through the end of January, but then they had an 83 day flash drought, which took the top end of the crop. He said it has had good, cool grainfill weather.

Fresh Start Emergency Shelter officials appeared before the Geary County Commission this week to request emergency funding help for the next five months&nbsp; at approximately $15,000 per month. Commissioners will meet with their&nbsp; finance director to talk about this issue but the challenge for the County is that they only budgeted $12,000 for this entire&nbsp; year and the funding request would be in addition to that amount.

There will be a review to determine if the county may provide more help, but no final decision has been made by the governing body.

Fresh Start is seeking a separate emergency services grant but won't know if it will be funded until July, and if received the money could not arrive until October. Sixty percent of that grant could be used to help fund operations and the remainder for purposes such as helping with rental arrears and security deposits.

Quality Play for All - the non-profit that led the renovations at 5th Street Playground Park - applied for and was awarded a&nbsp;$50,000 grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Kansas to install a new fitness court&nbsp;at the park.&nbsp; &nbsp; Quality Play for All&nbsp;is led&nbsp;by Kendall Schoenrock, Angie Greenwood, and Joy Davis.&nbsp;

This is a joint venture with the City and was supported&nbsp;by a number of other local organizations.&nbsp;&nbsp;Josh Gray with Parks and Rec is managing the installation process.&nbsp; We hope to have it installed in the next month or so.

The Junction City Lady Jay softball team was in Derby on Tuesday night for regional softball.&nbsp;

The Lady Jays played Wichita Northwest in a survive-and-advance game, and a resilient, come-from-behind, 18-13 victory in extra innings propelled Junction City into the regional championship game for the first time since 2002.&nbsp;

Junction City then squared off against the number one seed in 6A West, the Derby Panthers. The Panthers won the game 11-1 and advanced to the 6A State Softball Tournament in Lawrence next week.&nbsp;&nbsp;

The loss wraps up the 2023-2024 softball season for Junction City. The Lady Jays finished the season with an even 11-11 record. It was the most wins in a season since 2002.&nbsp;

This year's run will begin in downtown Junction City with the finish remaining in Heritage Park. All races will begin at 7:30 a.m.

The Freedom Run Independence Day tradition, now in its 48 year, was founded on the idea of community connections, where freedom is celebrated and honored.&nbsp;Runners will simultaneously depart for all three courses at the intersection of 6th and Washington.

RILEY COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities in Riley County have captured an inmate who&nbsp;did not arrive at the workforce center and&nbsp; did not return to the jail. Just after 3:30p.m. Tuesday, the Riley County Police Department reported Justin Brown, 34, escaped from custody.

Brown was located at City Park and booked back into jail just before 2a.m. Wednesday, according to online jail records.&nbsp; The RCPD released no additional details.

The Geary County Sheriff's Department said on Tuesday at 0808 a.m. Deputies responded to the westbound I-70 mile marker 310 rest area for an injured female. The female was found on the sidewalk with facial injuries and transported to Stormont Vail for evaluation.

Participants on the northern routes of this year’s Hard Winter Wheat Tour saw some of the better-looking wheat that they’ve seen in years, while participants on the southern routes saw drought-stricken fields. They calculated yields based on head counts and number of spikelets in the heads; however, tour scouts saw stripe rust, wheat streak mosaic virus and freeze damage.

About 69 people from 19 U.S. states, traveled in 18 cars on six routes between Manhattan and Colby, Kan., Tuesday, stopping at wheat fields every 15-20 miles along the routes, as part of the Wheat Quality Council’s 66th Annual Hard Winter Wheat Evaluation Tour.

About half the participants had not been on the tour before. They were shown how to take yield measurements from tour alumni, using the formula provided by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS). This formula is based on 2014-2023 Kansas wheat objective yield data. Farmers can calculate their own field estimates using the same formula with instructions at kswheat.com.

Every tour participant makes yield calculations at each stop based on three to four different area samplings per field. These individual estimates are averaged with the rest of their route mates, and eventually added to a formula that produces a final yield estimate for the areas along the routes. While yields tend to be the spotlight of the Wheat Quality Tour, the real benefit is the ability to network among the ‘grain chain.’ This tour gives Kansas farmers the chance to interact with and influence their customers around the globe, on the tour, as well as at the #wheattour24 hashtag.

The calculated yield is based on what scouts saw at this point in time. A lot can happen between now and harvest. The calculated yield from all cars was 49.9 bushels per acre, which was above trendline yields and is representative of areas of the state that are not most impacted by drought conditions. Day 2 of the tour will travel through southwest and south central Kansas, areas that have missed out on any recent precipitation.

Statewide, based on May 1 conditions, Kansas' 2024 winter wheat crop is forecast at 267.9 million bushels, up 66 million bushels from last year's crop, according to NASS. Average yield is forecast at 38 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from last year. Acreage to be harvested for grain is estimated at 7.05 million acres, up from last year’s 5.75 million acres.

For the week ending May 12, 2024, Kansas winter wheat condition rated 13% very poor, 22% poor, 34% fair, 28% good and 3% excellent. Kansas winter wheat jointed was 97%, ahead of 84% last year and 89% for the five-year average. Headed was 73%, well ahead of 48% last year and 43% average. Coloring was 1%.

In addition to Kansas reports, scouts from Nebraska and Colorado met the group in Colby to give reports from their states.

Royce Schaneman from Nebraska Wheat Board reported that USDA estimates the Nebraska crop at 40.8 million bushels, which is up from 36.96 million bushels last year. Yield is estimated at 48 bushels per acre.

A report from Colorado estimated the crop at 72 million bushels, based on a yield of 44 bushels per acre and 2.1 million acres planted. This is lower than the May 1 USDA estimate of 81.4 million bushels, based on slightly higher abandonment. Last year’s production was 74.62 million bushels.

These estimates are for this year’s hard winter wheat crop during this current snapshot in time.

(JUNCTION CITY, Kan., May 10, 2024) — Stormont Vail Health&nbsp; announced that the Flint Hills Campus has received funding to purchase a new jaundice meter for the Birthplace. Adding this in the Flint Hills Birthplace offers immediate benefits for patients and team members alike.

“The jaundice meter will allow our Birthplace team to quickly and easily screen newborns for jaundice without causing them more stress and, in turn, keep our moms as stress-free as possible,” said Nicole Graham, Nurse Manager of the Flint Hills Campus Birthplace. “Once confirmed, we can treat jaundice in newborns with a blanket that shines a special blue light, helping to break down the cause of their jaundice.”

Jaundice is a condition found commonly in newborns. According to the National Library of Medicine, “Most jaundice is not harmful to your baby…In some situations, however, there is so much bilirubin in a baby’s blood that it can be harmful.” The purchase of the jaundice meter will ensure timely and more efficient care for newborns born with jaundice in Geary County and surrounding communities.

The acquisition of the jaundice meter was made possible through the support of various organizations in the Junction City, Manhattan, and Topeka communities, Walmart, Stormont Vail Flint Hills Campus Auxiliary, Geary Community Healthcare Foundation, R2B4 Bramlage Family Foundation, and the Greater Geary Community Foundation.

Geary County Booking Photos May 11-14

The Kansas Department of Transportation has submitted a letter to Junction City and Geary County officials updating the Taylor Road project. That includes replacement of an aging bridge over I-70 with the potential opportunity for a new interchange.

KDOT Deputy Secretary Vanessa Lamoreaux said that they continue to work with Junction City and Geary County on future planning and local infrastructure needs in this area but they are not not aware of any confirmed developments within the project area.

She noted that due to the aging condition of the Taylor Road bridge, replacement is necessary. Plans for the replacement are moving forward and if development of the area occurs there is the opportunity to prepare a future interchange. However no decision regarding an interchange has been made.

Lamoreaux said that they recognize the impact this work may have on nearby landowners and will stay engaged as the project moves forward. The proposed bridge replacement and preparation for a future interchange could require the acquisition of additional property. That could include right-of-way, access control and permanent and / or temporary easements. If your property is impacted you will be contacted by a KDOT right-of-way representative once the design footprint has been established. That outreach is expected to occur in late 2025.

The next community update from KDOT is expected to occur in the spring of 2025.

17th District State Senator Jeff Longbine has announced his intention to retire from the Kansas Senate. He informed the Geary County Commission of his plans on Monday, adding he will be in office until January.

Longbine has represented the District that includes Junction City and part of rural Geary County, Fort Riley, Grandview Plaza, Lyon County including Emporia and parts of&nbsp; Wabaunsee and Pottawatomie counties for 14 years.

One candidate, Republican Mike Argabright of Olpe, has filed for election to the 17th District seat. He is a former superintendent of schools for USD 252 Southern Lyon County.

RILEY COUNTY—There were no injured in an accident that occurred just after 2:30p.m. Monday&nbsp;at the corner of Colorado and 3rd Streets in Manhattan.

The city of Manhattan reported Issac Griego hit two small light posts causing damage to the posts.  The total estimated loss is $2,600.

The Geary County Sheriff's Deputies responded Monday to the 313 I-70 west bound off ramp for a motor vehicle accident. Charles Cummings of Manhattan was traveling eastbound in his 2005 Chevrolet Classic when he missed his exit. Cummings attempted the exit at the&nbsp; last minute causing him to lose control of the vehicle and collide with a rock wall. Auto Mikes Wrecker removed the vehicle. No injuries were reported.

Tragically, people lose their lives while visiting USACE-managed lands and waters every year. Most of the tragedies are water related. The public’s help is needed to reduce the number of fatalities at the more than 400 USACE-managed lakes and river projects nationwide.&nbsp;

People of all ages are encouraged to practice water safety this summer. Before entering or being around open water (lakes, rivers, ponds, etc.), keep these things in mind because they could save your life or the life of someone you care about.

If you are ejected from a boat, fall, or jump into water that is colder than 70 degrees, you can inhale water from involuntary gasping, hyperventilation, panic, and sometimes vertigo that can cause you to drown. You can also be knocked unconscious if you are ejected from your boat or fall into the water along the shoreline while fishing.&nbsp;</li><li>Wear a life jacket&nbsp;– By providing time to be rescued, it will help ensure you survive an unexpected fall into the water. It can also save your life if you become exhausted due to fatigue, waves, or current while swimming. An adult can drown in 60 seconds, and it takes a strong swimmer 10 minutes to put on a life jacket after entering the water. Statistics show that numerous drownings could have been prevented if a life jacket would have been worn.&nbsp;</li><li>Wear Engine Cutoff Device While Boating&nbsp;– If thrown out of a boat, there is always the danger of being struck by a spinning propeller, especially since an unoccupied boat can often start traveling in circles after the operator is ejected. Wearing an engine cut-off switch lanyard or electronic fob immediately stops the engine after ejection so that the operator can regain control of the boat.</li><li>Know your swimming abilities&nbsp;– Be aware that swimming in open water is different from swimming in a pool, and your swimming ability decreases with age. It is never too late to take swimming lessons and learn to swim well. Several people every year drown while swimming to retrieve boats, hats, and toys. Let those things go because they are not worth losing your life over.</li><li>Alcohol and water are a deadly combination&nbsp;– Alcohol induces an inner ear condition (caloric labyrinthitis) that can cause you to become disoriented when underwater and not realize which way is up. If you jump or fall in the water, you can become disoriented and swim down instead of up to safety, causing you to drown. This is more likely to happen if you have been consuming alcohol.</li><li>Understand “boater’s hypnosis” – It is a condition brought on by the effects of sun, wind, noise, vibration, and motion experienced during a day of boating. Boater’s hypnosis can slow your reaction time almost as much as if you were legally intoxicated. Adding alcohol to this condition intensifies the effects.</li><li>Be Aware of Carbon Monoxide Poisoning While Boating&nbsp;- Carbon monoxide poisoning is not limited to boats with enclosed cabins. It has proven to be deadly on open motorboats too. Carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless toxic gas produced when a carbon-based fuel burns, such as gasoline, propane, charcoal, and oil. Carbon monoxide can kill you while you are on or in the water near a boat, so use a marine carbon monoxide detector; always maintain fresh air circulation; seat children in the forward-most seating on a boat; shut off boat motors to avoid unnecessary idling; be aware of emissions from other boats; and seek medical attention immediately if you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning.</li><li>Watch Your Children&nbsp;– Constantly supervise your children whenever they’re in, on, or near open water. Always keep them within arm’s reach. To keep them safe keep yourself safe by ensuring you and they wear properly fitted life jackets whenever enjoying your favorite outdoor water recreational activity.</li><li>Air Temperature and Water Temperature are not the same&nbsp;– The water temperature in rivers and lakes can be significantly colder than the air temperature and jumping or falling into cold water can be a dangerous shock to your body, so it’s important to wear a properly fitted life jacket to increase your chances of survival. Keep in mind that although the air temperatures are rising, water temperatures are slow to rise, and some lakes and rivers have cold water temperatures year-round.</li><li>Milford and Tuttle Creek Lakes are the two largest Corps operated reservoirs in Kansas.</li>

Corps of Engineers reminds visitors to practice safety

A motion by Geary County Commission Chair Trish Giordano to continue with up to $500,000 in community improvement district funding paid by customers for Redfish / LLC - Acorn's Resort and up to 500,000 to Rural Water District 4# has received approval by the governing body. The money would be intended to help encourage economic development. Each entity would receive CID funds until they have been used or the year 2036 is reached, whichever comes first.

Giordano and Commissioner Keith Ascher voted yes on the motion while Commissioner Alex Tyson voted no. There will be a caveat that Acorn's can expand as desired and the rural water district will continue to provide water to the resort, other&nbsp; developers and the state park could also expand.

Acorn's has until June 5th to decide if they accept the proposal or receipt of CID fund collections by the state would stop on October 1.

RILEY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged criminal damage to property in Riley County.

Just before 4p.m. Sunday, officers filed a report of criminal damage to property at the corner of Goodnow Avenue and Tecumseh Road, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 41-year-old man reported a known suspect used a hatchet to damage the roof of the victim's vehicle.  Total estimated loss in this matter is over $1,000

Cenergistic has presented Energy Star awards to 12 Geary USD 475 school buildings. This recognition is awarded to buildings that rate in the top 25 percent nationwide for energy efficiency.

The buildings in the District receiving recognition are Eisenhower Fort Riley, Grandview, Lincoln, Milford, Seitz, Sheridan, Spring Valley, Ware , Washington, and Westwood Elementary Schools plus Junction City Middle School.
