WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service today issued a renewed 
warning urging people to carefully review the Employee Retention Credit 
(ERC) guidelines before trying to claim the credit as promoters continue
 pushing ineligible people to file.

The IRS and tax professionals continue to see third parties 
aggressively promoting these ERC schemes on radio and online. These 
promoters charge large upfront fees or a fee that is contingent on the 
amount of the refund. And the promoters may not inform taxpayers that 
wage deductions claimed on the business' federal income tax return must 
be reduced by the amount of the credit.

"While this is a legitimate credit that has provided a financial 
lifeline to millions of businesses, there continue to be promoters who 
aggressively mislead people and businesses into thinking they can claim 
these credits," said Acting IRS Commissioner Doug O'Donnell. "Anyone who
 is considering claiming this credit needs to carefully review the 
guidelines. If the tax professional they're using raises questions about
 the accuracy of the Employee Retention Credit claim, people should 
listen to their advice. The IRS is actively auditing and conducting 
criminal investigations related to these false claims. People need to 
think twice before claiming this."

The IRS has been <a href="https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/employers-warned-to-beware-of-third-parties-promoting-improper-employee-retention-credit-claims">warning about this scheme</a> since <a href="https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/employers-beware-of-third-parties-promoting-improper-employee-retention-credit-claim">last fall</a>,
 but there continue to be attempts to claim the ERC during the 2023 tax 
filing season. Tax professionals note they continue to be pressured by 
people wanting to claim credits improperly. The IRS Office of 
Professional Responsibility is working on additional guidance for the 
tax professional community that will be available in the near future.

People and businesses can avoid this scheme, and by not filing 
improper claims in the first place. If the business filed an income tax 
return deducting qualified wages before it filed an employment tax 
return claiming the credit, the business should file an amended income 
tax return to correct any overstated wage deduction.

Businesses should be cautious of advertised schemes and direct 
solicitations promising tax savings that are too good to be true. 
Taxpayers are always responsible for the information reported on their 
tax returns. Improperly claiming the ERC could result in taxpayers being
 required to repay the credit along with penalties and interest.

The ERC is a refundable tax credit designed for businesses who 
continued paying employees while shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic 
or who had significant declines in gross receipts from March 13, 2020, 
to Dec. 31, 2021. Eligible taxpayers can claim the ERC on an original or
 amended employment tax return for a period within those dates.

 the ERC in the fourth quarter of 2021. Additionally, for any quarter, 
eligible employers cannot claim the ERC on wages that were reported as 
payroll costs in obtaining PPP loan forgiveness or that were used to

To use the Where's My Refund" tool, taxpayers will need to enter

HUTCHINSON — "HYPROV: Improv Under Hypnosis" is coming to the Fox in Hutchinson on Friday night.

The
 evening begins with hypnotist Asad Mecci welcoming 20 volunteers on 
stage to be hypnotized. The most receptive to hypnosis then join Colin 
Mochrie, improv comedian from TV's "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" to improvise 
the rest of the show, while hypnotized.

"It's a totally different 
experience," Mochrie said. "When I worked with the guys from Whose Line,
 even though we're making it up, I can usually tell what joke they are 
going to head for, what kind of ending they are going to head for in the
 scene. I don't have that with these people. They just immediately react
 to whatever is happening in the moment. They are all about the present,
 not about the future."

Friday's performance is the tour's only 
Kansas date and Mecci is excited about bringing the one of a kind style 
to the Sunflower State.

"How many more plays are you going to see?
 How many more musicals are you going to see?," Mecci said. "You will 
never, ever, and I guarantee this, see a show like Hyprov in your life, 
because it is completely unique. It is made up every single night. Our 
cast members are people from the audience, random volunteers from the 
audience who come up on stage, get hypnotized and then improvise with 
Colin Mochrie from Whose Line. It is like nothing you've ever seen 
before."

Being hypnotized is not the same for all who go under, but Mochrie and Mecci have ways of involving the subjects.

"We've
 tried to come up with games, that even the ones who may be under 
different types of hypnosis, sometimes they get very sluggish and their

use everyone that ended up as part of the improv troupe, so everybody 
gets the chance to do something."

today to warn taxpayers of new scams that urge people to use wage 
information on a tax return to claim false credits in hopes of getting a
 big refund.

One scheme, which is circulating on social media, encourages people to use tax software to manually fill out <a href="https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-w-2">Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement</a>,
 and include false income information. In this W-2 scheme, scam artists 
suggest people make up large income and withholding figures as well as 
the employer it is coming from. Scam artists then instruct people to 
file the bogus tax return electronically in hopes of getting a 
substantial refund – sometimes as much as five figures – due to the 
large amount of withholding.

The IRS along with the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/security-summit">Security Summit</a>
 partners in the tax industry and the states, are actively watching for 
this scheme and others. In addition, the IRS works with payroll 
companies and large employers – as well as the Social Security 
Administration – to verify W-2 information.

With National Consumer Protection Week&nbsp;starting Monday, the IRS and Summit partners warn people not to fall for these scams.

"We are seeing signs this scam is increasing, and we worry that 
innocent taxpayers could be at risk of being tempted into falling into a
 trap that puts them at risk of financial and criminal penalties," said 
Acting IRS Commissioner Doug O'Donnell. "The IRS and Security Summit 
partners remind people there is no secret way to get free money or a big
 refund. People should not make up income and try to submit a fraudulent
 tax return in hopes of getting a huge refund."

Two variations of this scheme are also being seen by the IRS; both 
involve misusing Form W-2 wage information in hopes of generating a 
larger refund:

The IRS reminds people who try this that they face a <a href="https://www.irs.gov/payments/penalties">wide range of penalties</a>. This may include a <a href="https://www.irs.gov/privacy-disclosure/the-truth-about-frivolous-tax-arguments-section-i-d-to-e">frivolous return penalty of $5,000</a>. Filers also run the risk of criminal prosecution for filing a false tax return.

For anyone who has participated in one of these schemes, there are several options that the IRS recommends. withheld federal income tax from those wages.</li>

IRS: New scam involving W-2 forms promises big refund

MANHATTAN – Contrary to its name, there isn’t actually corn in corned beef.&nbsp;

Kansas State University food scientist Karen Blakeslee said the name comes from dry-curing beef brisket with salt crystals the size of corn. ‘Corning’ the beef was originally used as a preservation technique during winter months or during lent, but corned beef can be found year-round now.&nbsp;&nbsp;

“It is traditionally served with cabbage on St. Patrick’s Day, but also a tasty meat for sandwiches,” Blakeslee said.&nbsp;

Most corned beef can be bought in a salt brine with spices, ready to cook. But you can also find ready-to-eat corned beef in the deli section of your grocery store.&nbsp;

“Use a long, moist cooking method either in the oven, on top of the stove or a slow cooker,” Blakeslee said. “It should be tender with an internal temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit when done.”&nbsp;

Blakeslee said corned beef may look pink when cooked because of the nitrates used during the brining process.&nbsp;

Once cooked, “let it rest at least 10 minutes and cut corned beef into slices against the grain,” she said.&nbsp;

Blakeslee, who is also coordinator of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/">K-State’s Rapid Response Center for food science</a>, publishes a monthly newsletter called&nbsp;<a href="https://www.rrc.k-state.edu/newsletter">You Asked It!</a>&nbsp;that provides numerous tips on being safe and healthy.&nbsp;

Taxpayers can pay from their bank account using their <a href="https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account">Online Account</a> or they can schedule payments in advance using IRS <a href="https://www.irs.gov/payments/direct-pay">Direct Pay</a>.

Farmers and fishers who did not pay all their 2022 estimated taxes by
 Jan. 17 must file their 2022 tax return and pay the entire tax due by 
March 1.

Only those that have paid their estimated tax payments by Jan. 17 can
 file by the regular April 18 deadline and avoid estimated tax 
penalties. This special rule generally applies when income from farming 
or fishing makes up at least 2/3 of the total gross income in either the
 current or the preceding tax year.

Disaster-area taxpayers, including farmers and fishers, have more 
time to file and pay. Currently, taxpayers in most of California and 
parts of Alabama and Georgia, have until Oct.16, 2023, to file their 
2022 return and pay any tax due. This extension is automatic; taxpayers 
don't need to file any paperwork or call the IRS to get it.

She was born on January 18, 1930, in Manchester, Kansas, the daughter

Since its debut in 1971, an anti-pollution ad showing a man in Native
 American attire shed a single tear at the sight of smokestacks and 
litter taking over a once unblemished landscape has become an indelible 
piece of TV pop culture.

It's been referenced over the decades 
since on shows like “The Simpsons” and “South Park” and in internet 
memes. But now a Native American advocacy group that was given the 
rights to the long-parodied public service announcement is retiring it, 
saying it has always been inappropriate.

The so-called “Crying 
Indian” with his buckskins and long braids made the late actor Iron Eyes
 Cody a recognizable face in households nationwide. But to many Native 
Americans, the public service announcement has been a painful reminder 
of the enduring stereotypes they face.

The nonprofit that 
originally commissioned the advertisement, Keep America Beautiful, had 
long been considering how to retire the ad and announced this week that 
it's doing so by transferring ownership of the rights to the National 
Congress of American Indians.

“Keep America Beautiful wanted to be
 careful and deliberate about how we transitioned this iconic 
advertisement/public service announcement to appropriate owners,” Noah 
Ullman, a spokesperson for the nonprofit, said via e-mail. “We spoke to 
several Indigenous peoples’ organizations and were pleased to identify 
the National Congress of American Indians as a potential caretaker.”

NCAI plans to end the use of the ad and watch for any unauthorized use.

“NCAI
 is proud to assume the role of monitoring the use of this advertisement
 and ensure it is only used for historical context; this advertisement 
was inappropriate then and remains inappropriate today,” said NCAI 
Executive Director Larry Wright, Jr. “NCAI looks forward to putting this
 advertisement to bed for good.”

When it premiered in the 1970s, 
the ad was a sensation. It led to Iron Eyes Cody filming three follow-up
 PSAs. He spent more than 25 years making public appearances and visits 
to schools on behalf of the anti-litter campaign, according to an <a href="https://apnews.com/article/9581117ee9e621d4232b5a32aad8eb97">Associated Press obituary.</a>

From
 there, Cody, who was Italian American but claimed to have Cherokee 
heritage through his father, was typecast as a stock Native American 
character, appearing in over 80 films. Most of the time, his character 
was simply “Indian,” “Indian Chief” or “Indian Joe.”

His movie 
credits from the 1950s-1980s included “Sitting Bull,” The Great Sioux 
Massacre," Nevada Smith, “A Man Called Horse” and “Ernest Goes to Camp."
 On television, he appeared in “Bonanza,” “Gunsmoke” and “Rawhide” among
 others. He also was a technical adviser on Native American matters on 
film sets.

Dr. Jennifer J. Folsom, a journalism and media 
communication professor at Colorado State University and a citizen of 
the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, remembers watching the public service 
announcement as a child.

“At that point, every single person who 
showed up with braids and buckskins, on TV or anywhere in the movies, I 
glommed on to that because it was such a rare thing to see,” said 
Folsom, whose areas of study include Native American pop culture. “I did
 see how people littered, and I did see how the creeks and the rivers 
were getting polluted.”

But as she grew up, Folsom noticed how media devoted little coverage to Native American environmental activists.

“There’s
 no agency for that sad so-called Indian guy sitting in a canoe, 
crying,” Folsom said. “I think it has done damage to public perception 
and support for actual Native people doing things to protect the land 
and protect the environment.”

She applauded Keep America 
Beautiful's decision as an “appropriate move.” It will mean a trusted 
group can help control the narrative the ad has promoted for over 50 
years, she said.

The ad's power has arguably already faded as 
Native and Indigenous youths come of age with a greater consciousness 
about stereotypes and cultural appropriation. TikTok has plenty of 
examples of Native people parodying or doing a takedown of the 
advertisement, Folsom said.

Robert “Tree” Cody, the adopted son of Iron Eyes Cody, said the advertisement had “good intent and good heart” at its core.

“It
 was one of the top 100 commercials,” said Robert Cody, an enrolled 
member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Arizona.

And, it reminded him of time spent with his father, said Cody, who lives at Santa Ana Pueblo in New Mexico.

“I
 remember a lot, even when he went on a movie set to finish his movies 
and stuff,” Cody said. “I remember going out to Universal (Studios), 
Disney, places like that.”

His wife, Rachel Kee-Cody, can't help 
but feel somewhat sad that an ad that means so much to their family will
 be shelved. But she is resigned to the decision.

“You know, times
 are changing as well. You keep going no matter how much it changes,” 
she said. “Disappointment. ... It'll pass.”

accounts Saturday showing what he said appeared to be a mythological 
woodland spirit similar to an elf.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador did not seem to be joking when <a href="https://twitter.com/lopezobrador_/status/1629617208899895296">he posted the photo</a> of an “Aluxe,” a mischievous woodland spirit in Mayan folklore.

López
 Obrador wrote the photo “was taken three days ago by an engineer, it 
appears to be an aluxe," adding “everything is mystical.”

The 
nighttime photo shows a tree with a branch forming what looks like a 
halo of hair, and what may be stars forming the figure’s eyes.

López
 Obrador has long expressed reverence for indigenous cultures and 
beliefs. Engineers and workers are in the Yucatan peninsula, 
constructing a tourist train that is the president's pet project.

According
 to traditional Mayan belief, “Aluxes” are small, mischievous creatures 
that inhabit forests and fields and are prone to playing tricks on 
people, like hiding things. Some people leave small offerings to appease
 them.

The ancient Mayan civilization reached its height from 300 
A.D. to 900 A.D. on the Yucatan Peninsula and in adjacent parts of 
Central America, but the Mayas’ descendants continue to live on the 
peninsula.

Many continue speaking the Mayan language and wearing 
traditional clothing, while also conserving traditional foods, crops, 
religion and medicine practices, despite the conquest of the region by 
the Spanish between 1527 and 1546.

"We spoke to several Indigenous peoples' organizations and were pleased to identify the National Congress of American Indians as a potential caretaker."NCAI plans to end the use of the ad and watch for any unauthorized use."NCAI is proud to assume the role of monitoring the use of this advertisement and ensure it is only used for historical context; this advertisement was inappropriate then and remains inappropriate today," said NCAI Executive Director Larry Wright, Jr. "NCAI looks forward to putting this advertisement to bed for good."When it premiered in the 1970s, the ad was a sensation. It led to Iron Eyes Cody filming three follow-up PSAs. He spent more than 25 years making public appearances and visits to schools on behalf of the anti-litter campaign, according to an Associated Press obituary.From there, Cody, who was Italian American but claimed to have Cherokee heritage through his father, was typecast as a stock Native American character, appearing in over 80 films. Most of the time, his character was simply "Indian," "Indian Chief" or "Indian Joe."His movie credits from the 1950s-1980s included "Sitting Bull," The Great Sioux Massacre," Nevada Smith, "A Man Called Horse" and "Ernest Goes to Camp." On television, he appeared in "Bonanza," "Gunsmoke" and "Rawhide" among others. He also was a technical adviser on Native American matters on film sets.Dr. Jennifer J. Folsom, a journalism and media communication professor at Colorado State University and a citizen of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma, remembers watching the public service announcement as a child."At that point, every single person who showed up with braids and buckskins, on TV or anywhere in the movies, I glommed on to that because it was such a rare thing to see," said Folsom, whose areas of study include Native American pop culture. "I did see how people littered, and I did see how the creeks and the rivers were getting polluted."But as she grew up, Folsom noticed how media devoted little coverage to Native American environmental activists."There's no agency for that sad so-called Indian guy sitting in a canoe, crying," Folsom said. "I think it has done damage to public perception and support for actual Native people doing things to protect the land and protect the environment."She applauded Keep America Beautiful's decision as an "appropriate move." It will mean a trusted group can help control the narrative the ad has promoted for over 50 years, she said.The ad's power has arguably already faded as Native and Indigenous youths come of age with a greater consciousness about stereotypes and cultural appropriation. TikTok has plenty of examples of Native people parodying or doing a takedown of the advertisement, Folsom said.Robert "Tree" Cody, the adopted son of Iron Eyes Cody, said the advertisement had "good intent and good heart" at its core."It was one of the top 100 commercials," said Robert Cody, an enrolled member of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community in Arizona.And, it reminded him of time spent with his father, said Cody, who lives at Santa Ana Pueblo in New Mexico."I remember a lot, even when he went on a movie set to finish his movies and stuff," Cody said. "I remember going out to Universal (Studios), Disney, places like that."His wife, Rachel Kee-Cody, can't help but feel somewhat sad that an ad that means so much to their family will be shelved. But she is resigned to the decision."You know, times are changing as well. You keep going no matter how much it changes," she said. "Disappointment. ... Rights to 'Crying Indian' ad to go to Native American group

Olivia P. Collins died Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at the age of 76 in her home of Meadowlark Hills, Manhattan, Kansas.

Olivia was born on October 23, 1946, in Weatherford, Texas to Georgie Layne Potter and Wilson Potter, who preceded Olivia in death in 2007 and 1997, as did the love of her life, Tony Jurich, in 2010.

Olivia graduated with honors from University of Texas at Austin with a bachelor’s degree in journalism and was awarded her master's degree in human development and the family from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and her Ph.D. in family life education from Kansas State University.

Her journalism degree was always important to Olivia. It was her first career and helped her express herself, connecting Olivia with the arts and nonprofit organizations whose causes she supported throughout her life. As her love for adolescents and young adults grew, she pursued advanced degrees where her true essence of teacher and mentor shone through, landing her in places and spaces she enriched with her open heart, critical mind, and remarkable ability to form meaningful connections.

Following her doctoral studies, Olivia remained at K-State serving in 4-H Youth Programs, UFM Community Learning Center, School of Family Studies and Human Services, College of Human Ecology Dean’s Office, and retiring from the Staley School of Leadership in 2010, where she served as assistant professor and director of the nonprofit leadership focus, a program she co-founded.

Olivia was recognized throughout her career for outstanding contributions to education and developing youth, and for her community leadership. She was named Leader of the Year from Kansas Association of Family and Consumer Sciences in 1995 and recognized also by the National Council on Family Relations. Olivia received the university’s “Putting Students First” Award and was celebrated by her Staley School students and colleagues with the Rost Outstanding Faculty/Staff Award and the Susan M. Scott Community Leadership Award. In 2014, Olivia received the Wildcat Pride Award for her advocacy of alumni relations from the K-State Alumni Association.

Olivia had an authentic way of accepting – and applauding – everyone for their unique gifts and talents. She paired this genuine and complete acceptance with an ability to raise expectations and challenge those she connected with to give and do their very best, making her the wisest and gentlest of mentors. When she retired, she so missed talking with students – although so many would keep in touch long after graduation, with notes, texts, and over coffee on visits back to town – that she would talk with everyone else, including former neighbors and colleagues, her favorite servers and bartenders, friends from long ago or just met – always happy to offer friendly advice and gentle nudges to any in need. Olivia was also quick to celebrate others, sending cards, gifts, plants and flowers to congratulate, console, or encourage. She would generously host a party, send drinks to someone’s table or pick up the tab for their meal – just because and with delight; “Isn’t this fun!”

Olivia was an only child and spoke fondly of her “four-square upbringing,” running away only once – hiding in the bushes, struggling with who she wanted to be. Not so long ago she laughed that she was still in the bushes figuring out who she is. We know Olivia as an intelligent, caring woman who built family throughout her life. She was an extraordinary partner to Tony Jurich, married for 23 years, and loving member of the Jurich clan, including those she is survived by: bother-in-law Peter Jurich; brother-in-law Steve Jurich and his wife Madeline and their children Matt, Maggie, and Jake, who has welcomed Olivia’s kitty companion Bella into his home; and niece and nephew Fran and Peter Babrow.

There are many organizations to which memorial contributions may be made that would pay tribute to Olivia, including funds she herself initiated: Amy Button Renz Nonprofit Leadership Fund, Tony Jurich Community Commitment and Leadership Award, and Tony Jurich Marriage and Family Therapy Excellence Fund; and those she supported including the Meadowlark Good Samaritan Fund and Girls on the Run all may be sent in care of the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home 1616 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas 66502. Ronald B. Haynes, 75, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away on Friday, February 17, 2023. A graveside service with military honors will take place on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., at Kansas Veterans' Cemetery.&nbsp; Memorial contributions may be made to the Knights Templar Eye Foundation, 3201 Cross Timbers Rd Bldg 4 Ste 300, Flower Mound, TX 75028. He was born on August 10, 1947, in Chanute, Kansas, to Byrle and Ruth (Patton) Haynes. Ronald spent his whole childhood in Chanute, Kansas, and graduated from Chanute High School in 1966. On January 16, 1967, he and his twin brother, Donald, joined the United States Navy. Together they served aboard the USS Oriskany aircraft working the integrated weapons system during the Vietnam conflict. After being discharged from the Navy, he moved to Santa Maria, California. Ronald started his own electrical business called "R and D Electrical", worked at Mighty Motors, then as a mechanic at Ted R. Smith Aerostar. Santa Maria is where he met the love of his life, Donna Squires. They got married in 1975 and moved to Junction City, Kansas, where they made their home. After moving to Junction City, he continued his electrical business “R and D Electrical” later renamed “Lamplighter Electric”. Over the years, Ronald worked for the Foundry, Whitaker Cable, and Woolworth Distribution Center. He installed many electronic gates and alarm systems for Tri City Fence and Kansas Fence. Ronald also did electrical work for IHOP restaurants. Ronald began his Civil Service career on Fort Riley in 1979. He started as an electrician and worked his way into the Electrical Engineering Department. Ronald retired from his career in 2001, after 22 years of service. Ronald and his wife, Donna, were members of the Santa Maria Saddleites Motorcycle Club when they lived in California. Ronald served as a Deputy Reserve Officer with the Geary County Sheriff's Department for 25 years. He and his wife were also apart of the Geary County Sheriff's Mounted Posse until it disbanded. Ronald was a lifetime member of the VFW, having recieved the "Quilt of Valor" on September 15, 2019. In his free time, he loved watching John Wayne movies and hanging out at Stacy's or IHOP drinking coffee. Anybody that knew Ron, knows that he had a story for everyone and every occasion. His stories will be greatly missed by his friends and family. Internal Revenue Service reminds taxpayers to gather their necessary 
information and visit IRS.gov for updated <a href="https://www.irs.gov/help/tax-law-questions">resources</a> and <a href="https://www.irs.gov/help/tools">tools</a> to help with their 2022 tax return.

Taxpayers should wait to file until they receive all their proper <a href="https://www.irs.gov/individuals/steps-to-take-now-to-get-a-jump-on-next-years-taxes">tax documents</a>, or they risk making a mistake that could cause delays.

They should also review their documents carefully. If any of the information is inaccurate or missing, taxpayers should <a href="https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc154">contact the payer</a> right away for a correction or to ensure the issuer has their current mailing or email address.

Creating an IRS <a href="https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account">Online Account</a> can help taxpayers securely access information about their federal tax account, including payments, tax records and more.

Organized tax records make preparing a complete and accurate tax return easier and may help taxpayers find overlooked <a href="https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions-for-individuals">deductions or credits</a>.

Taxpayers with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number or <a href="https://www.irs.gov/individuals/individual-taxpayer-identification-number">ITIN</a>
 may need to renew it if it's expired and is needed on a U.S. federal 
tax return. If they don't renew an expiring or expired ITIN, the IRS can
 still accept their return, but it may delay processing or credits owed.

Changes to credits and deductions for tax year 2022

Unlike 2020 and 2021, there were no new stimulus payments for 2022, 
so taxpayers should not expect to get an additional payment in their 
2023 tax refund.

However, taxpayers may still qualify for temporarily expanded eligibility of the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/affordable-care-act/individuals-and-families/the-premium-tax-credit-the-basics">Premium Tax Credit</a>,
 a refundable credit that helps eligible individuals and families cover 
the premiums for their health insurance purchased through the Health 
Insurance Marketplace. To get this credit, taxpayers must meet <a href="https://www.irs.gov/affordable-care-act/individuals-and-families/eligibility-for-the-premium-tax-credit">certain requirements</a> and file a tax return with <a href="https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-8962">Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit</a>.

Also, eligibility rules changed to claim a <a href="https://www.irs.gov/businesses/plug-in-electric-vehicle-credit-irc-30-and-irc-30d">Clean Vehicle Credit</a> under the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/news-on-the-inflation-reduction-act-of-2022">Inflation Reduction Act of 2022</a>.

Some tax credits return to 2019 levels. This means that taxpayers will likely receive a significantly smaller refund compared with the previous tax year.

Changes include amounts for the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/earned-income-tax-credit-eitc">Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/child-tax-credit">Child Tax Credit (CTC)</a>&nbsp;and the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/child-and-dependent-care-credit-information">Child and Dependent Care Credit</a> will revert to pre-COVID levels.

Finally, taxpayers that don't itemize and take the standard deduction cannot deduct their charitable contributions this year.

There are no changes to what counts as income or how tax is 
calculated, including income from the sale of personal assets. Taxpayers
 must report all their income on their tax return unless it's excluded 
by law.

<a href="https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1099-k">Form 1099-K, Payment Card and Third-Party Network Transactions</a>,
 is an IRS information return used to report certain payment 
transactions and helps to improve voluntary tax compliance. Taxpayers 
use this information return with their other tax records to determine 
their correct tax liability. 2022 Forms 1099-K should have been 
furnished to the payee by Jan. 31, 2023.

The American Rescue Plan of 2021 changed the reporting threshold for 
third-party settlement organizations, including payment apps and online 
settlement organizations. The new threshold requires reporting of 
transactions in excess of $600 per year; changed from the previous 
threshold of an excess of $20,000 and an excess of 200 transactions per 
year. Third-party settlement organizations are required to report 
payments for goods and services.

On Dec. 23, 2022, the IRS announced that calendar year 2022 will be treated as a transition year for the reduced reporting threshold of $600.

Even though the Form 1099-K reduced reporting requirement for 
third-party settlement organizations is delayed, some individuals may 
still receive a Form 1099-K who have not received one in the past. Some 
individuals may receive a Form 1099-K for the sale of personal items or 
in situations where they received a Form 1099-K in error (i.e. for 
transactions between friends and family, or expense sharing).

Money received as a gift or to reimburse shared meals or rent should 
not be reported on a 1099-K. Payments should indicate whether they are 
personal to family and friends or a business transaction for goods and 
services.

If the information is incorrect on the 1099-K, taxpayers should 
contact the payer immediately. The payer's name appears in the upper 
left corner on the form. The taxpayer should keep a copy of all 
correspondence with the payer with their records.

If a Form 1099-K is received in error and a corrected Form 1099-K can't be obtained, follow the IRS' updated guidance at <a href="https://www.irs.gov/businesses/understanding-your-form-1099-k">Understanding Your Form 1099-K</a>.

If any of the information is inaccurate or missing, taxpayers should <a href="https://www.irs.gov/taxtopics/tc154">contact the payer</a> right away for a correction or to ensure the issuer has their current mailing or email address.Creating an IRS <a href="https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account">Online Account</a> can help taxpayers securely access information about their federal tax account, including payments, tax records and more.Organized tax records make preparing a complete and accurate tax return easier and may help taxpayers find overlooked <a href="https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions-for-individuals">deductions or credits</a>.Taxpayers with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number or <a href="https://www.irs.gov/individuals/individual-taxpayer-identification-number">ITIN</a>
 may need to renew it if it's expired and is needed on a U.S. federal 
tax return. If they don't renew an expiring or expired ITIN, the IRS can
 still accept their return, but it may delay processing or credits owed.<h2>Changes to credits and deductions for tax year 2022</h2>Unlike 2020 and 2021, there were no new stimulus payments for 2022, 
so taxpayers should not expect to get an additional payment in their 
2023 tax refund.However, taxpayers may still qualify for temporarily expanded eligibility of the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/affordable-care-act/individuals-and-families/the-premium-tax-credit-the-basics">Premium Tax Credit</a>,
 a refundable credit that helps eligible individuals and families cover 
the premiums for their health insurance purchased through the Health 
Insurance Marketplace. To get this credit, taxpayers must meet <a href="https://www.irs.gov/affordable-care-act/individuals-and-families/eligibility-for-the-premium-tax-credit">certain requirements</a> and file a tax return with <a href="https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-8962">Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit</a>.Also, eligibility rules changed to claim a <a href="https://www.irs.gov/businesses/plug-in-electric-vehicle-credit-irc-30-and-irc-30d">Clean Vehicle Credit</a> under the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/newsroom/news-on-the-inflation-reduction-act-of-2022">Inflation Reduction Act of 2022</a>.Some tax credits return to 2019 levels. This means that taxpayers will likely receive a significantly smaller refund compared with the previous tax year.Changes include amounts for the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/earned-income-tax-credit-eitc">Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC)</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/child-tax-credit">Child Tax Credit (CTC)</a>&nbsp;and the <a href="https://www.irs.gov/credits-deductions/individuals/child-and-dependent-care-credit-information">Child and Dependent Care Credit</a> will revert to pre-COVID levels.<ul>
 <li>For the EITC, eligible taxpayers with no children who received roughly $1,500 in 2021 will now get $500 for the 2022 tax year.</li><li>Those who got $3,600 per dependent in 2021 for the CTC will, if eligible, get $2,000 per dependent for the 2022 tax year.</li><li>The Child and Dependent Care Credit returns to a maximum of $2,100 in 2022 instead of $8,000 in 2021.</li>
 </ul>Finally, taxpayers that don't itemize and take the standard deduction cannot deduct their charitable contributions this year.<h2>Transition year for 1099-K reporting</h2>There are no changes to what counts as income or how tax is 
calculated, including income from the sale of personal assets. Taxpayers
 must report all their income on their tax return unless it's excluded 
by law.<a href="https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-1099-k">Form 1099-K, Payment Card and Third-Party Network Transactions</a>,
 is an IRS information return used to report certain payment 
transactions and helps to improve voluntary tax compliance. Taxpayers 
use this information return with their other tax records to determine 
their correct tax liability. 2022 Forms 1099-K should have been 
furnished to the payee by Jan. 31, 2023.The American Rescue Plan of 2021 changed the reporting threshold for 
third-party settlement organizations, including payment apps and online 
settlement organizations. The new threshold requires reporting of 
transactions in excess of $600 per year; changed from the previous 
threshold of an excess of $20,000 and an excess of 200 transactions per 
year. Third-party settlement organizations are required to report 
payments for goods and services.<h2>On Dec. 23, 2022, the IRS announced that calendar year 2022 will be treated as a transition year for the reduced reporting threshold of $600.</h2>Even though the Form 1099-K reduced reporting requirement for 
third-party settlement organizations is delayed, some individuals may 
still receive a Form 1099-K who have not received one in the past. Some 
individuals may receive a Form 1099-K for the sale of personal items or 
in situations where they received a Form 1099-K in error (i.e. for 
transactions between friends and family, or expense sharing).Money received as a gift or to reimburse shared meals or rent should 
not be reported on a 1099-K. Payments should indicate whether they are 
personal to family and friends or a business transaction for goods and 
services.If the information is incorrect on the 1099-K, taxpayers should 
contact the payer immediately. The payer's name appears in the upper 
left corner on the form. The taxpayer should keep a copy of all 
correspondence with the payer with their records.If a Form 1099-K is received in error and a corrected Form 1099-K can't be obtained, follow the IRS' updated guidance at <a href="https://www.irs.gov/businesses/understanding-your-form-1099-k">Understanding Your Form 1099-K</a>.

Tax Time Guide: Things to consider when filing 2022 tax return

Singer/songwriter Lisa Brokop in her warm, rich voice and 
accompanying band will pay homage to one of country music’s greatest 
ladies, Patsy Cline, with many of her classic hits including “Sweet 
Dreams” and “Walkin’ After Midnight.”

This Golden Belt Community 
Concert featuring Brokop and the Patsy Cline Project is set for 7:30 
p.m. Sunday, Feb. 26, at the Great Bend Municipal Auditorium, Lakin and 
Stone. Doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Brokop created The Patsy Cline 
Project in 2016 as a collection of Cline’s well-known country and pop 
music hits of the 1950s and 1960s. She also will sing a couple of her 
own songs that she has composed in Cline’s well-known vocal style.

“I’ll
 be coming full circle with this project,” Brokop says, “When I started 
singing, I would sing some of Patsy’s songs because I didn’t have my 
own. They are still some of my favorites today and I am so excited to 
have the opportunity to honor this amazing lady and the incredible music
 she gave us.”

Program highlights will also include “I Fall to 
Pieces,” “Your Cheating Heart,” “Strange,” “Faded Love,” “Back in My 
Baby’s Arms,” and “Blue Moon Over Kentucky.”

This GBCCA event is 
open to association members. No single concert tickets are available. 
Anyone who is not a member and wishes to purchase a season membership 
may do so at this concert. Because the concert association encourages 
music education in the schools, full-time students of any age will be 
admitted to the concert for a $5 donation at the door.

Season 
memberships are $50 per adult; $10 for any full-time enrolled student; 
$110 for a Family Membership (two adults and all dependent children 
living in the same household); and $110 for a Grandparent Package (two 
adults and up to four minor grandchildren).

The GBCCA 2022-2023 
season will continue with Forever Simon and Garfunkel, March 14, and 
Beginnings, the ultimate Chicago Tribute Band, April 22.
