Judith Ann “Judy” Davis, age 74, of Manhattan, died on April 23, 2021, from metastatic lung cancer. As was her fervent wish, she died at home in the care of her three children. Judy was born on October 19, 1946, in Frankfort, Kansas, to Franklin F. and Twila Mae (Schreiner) Davis. She graduated from Linn High School in 1963. In 1981 and 1988 respectively, she earned her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Political Science from Kansas State University. Judy was a woman of unquestionable conviction and fierce integrity who desired to live a life of purpose and intent. To that end, she worked in the Office of Student Life from 1992 to 1997, showing dedication, support and concern for the students of Kansas State University in her role as director of the Women’s Center. Most significantly, Judy’s greatest legacy will be her service to vulnerable women and their children as the executive director of The Crisis Center, Inc. Her tenure at The Crisis Center encompassed two time periods, first from 1981 to 1992, and then again from 1997 until the time of her death. In total, Judy devoted nearly 35 years to her life’s calling as an advocate for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. She was loved, admired and respected for her unwavering commitment to increasing awareness, understanding, and compassion for her clients. Judy gave voice to the underrepresented and misrepresented and made a tremendous difference in the Manhattan community. It was her steadfast sense of duty to “the Center” that motivated Judy’s valiant fight to live and continue to work. Her tenacious sense of responsibility to the Center gave her the strength, perseverance and will to battle so long and so hard against the vicious cancer that consumed and ravaged her body. Cancer took her body but it could not diminish her unrelenting spirit. Even as her life waned and she became too weak to walk, drive or open doors, she still continued to go to her office to work. It was difficult for those who loved her to watch her decline and struggle. However, out of respect for her, we tried to help her serve as fully as she possibly could for as long as she possibly could. Judy was deeply grateful for and profoundly humbled by the generous outpouring of financial support given by the citizens of the Manhattan area for The Crisis Center’s new safe house. Although she did not live to see the construction of the new safe house, it comforted her to know that it would be built and serve as a refuge and safe haven for the Center’s clients, thus fulfilling a long-held dream and goal. Judy was a member of the Manhattan First Congregational United Church of Christ. She was an avid cook and gifted baker who took pride and joy in creating delicious food for her family and friends. She mastered many exquisite and delightful dishes over the years, but she will be especially remembered for her scrumptious pies and bread. The times she cherished most were those spent around her dining room table with the people she loved, gathered together to celebrate holidays and birthdays and savor the amazing food she had prepared lovingly by hand. One could call Judy a “food snob” and she rather relished that designation! She also enjoyed a really great glass of red wine or a good cup of black coffee—the stronger and darker the better! Judy was crazy about her loyal little Labradoodle, Bonnie, who was a constant source of comfort, companionship and entertainment for her. Judy was previously married to Terry K. Bokelman, the father of her son and two daughters. Those left to celebrate Judy’s life and mourn her passing are her three children, Leslie (Mick) Smith, Michelle Welliver, and Jonathan Bokelman, all of Manhattan. She is also survived by her aunt Elizabeth (Schreiner) Budenbender of rural Frankfort; brother Walter D. Davis of Warren, Michigan; granddaughter Kelsey Welliver and grandson Zane Smith of Manhattan; niece Laura Alexander of Manhattan and nephew Shawn Alexander of Clay Center. Judy will also be greatly missed by the many individuals to whom she was a mentor, role model and example of humble service. Kerry Foster Lewis, age 71, of Riley, Kansas, died April 20, 2021, at Stormont Vail Health in Topeka. He was born March 10, 1950, in Manhattan, the second child of Paul D. and Lois M. (Graves) Lewis. Kerry attended kindergarten at Woodrow Wilson Elementary School. On his 10th birthday, Kerry got his first paying job selling newspapers on the street for the Manhattan Mercury. He attended Monsignor Luckey High School, graduating in 1968. While in high school, Kerry delivered papers for the Kansas City Star, sometimes working two or three hours in the morning before going to school. Upon graduation from high school, Kerry attended Wichita State University for two semesters. After leaving college, he worked in various construction jobs, was a receiving clerk at Derby Food Center at Kansas State University, and also worked for Guerdon Industries mobile home factory. In 1969, Kerry enlisted in the Naval Reserve and began his active duty in November 1970. He served aboard the USS Duluth (LPD-6), and amphibious transport, which made two deployments to Vietnam (March 1971 and May 1972). During the second deployment, while participating in a beach assault of the coast of Quang Tri Province, the Duluth was the target of enemy fire from North Vietnamese shore batteries which earned Kerry and his shipmates a combat action ribbon. Other ports of call visited by the Duluth while Kerry was a crewmember include the Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. After leaving the Navy, Kerry enrolled in the two-year Drafting Technologies course at Manhattan Area Vocational Technical School, graduating in 1975. During his second year at MATVS, Kerry was hired as a drafter at United Telephone Company in Junction City, Kansas. Eventually moving from Drafting to Continuing Property Records, Kerry visited several communities throughout Kansas, as well as Western Nebraska and Southeastern Wyoming, maintaining an inventory of Central Office Equipment and Outside Plant Facilities. After 33 ½ years and two company name changes (U.T.C to Sprint to Embarq) Kerry retired at the end of 2007. Kerry enjoyed several interests, which include photography, collecting, drawing on the computer, writing, and playing the guitar (until diabetic nerve damage in his fingertips forced him to give it up). Kerry was active in the Kansas Authors Club, along with his mother, and had entered several writing contests for which he won awards for poetry and short stories. During his retirement, Kerry was attentive to his mother. He spent every weekend with her, buying her groceries, taking her to the bank and helping her with bills, but mostly, he enjoyed her company. They spent man an afternoon on her front porch, reminiscing about her childhood and places they had lived when Kerry was growing up. For several years he moved in with her and became her primary care giver so that she could stay in the home she had occupied for the last 60 years. Kerry is survived by his mother Lois M. Lewis of Manhattan; three sisters: Gail Burd of Manhattan, Julia Warner (Jeff) of Strong City, KS, and Frances Lucas (Bruce) of Columbus, OH; eight nieces, one nephew, seven grandnieces and seven grandnephews. Kerry was preceded in death by his father Paul D. Lewis in 2005, and by his older brother Warren (Tyker) in 1977. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, April 26th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel with Father Kerry Ninemire officiating. Irene May Sharp, age 96 of Clay Center, passed away Sunday, April 18, 2021 at the Clay Center Presbyterian Manor.

She was born on December 8, 1924 in Idana, the daughter of Henry and Martha (McMahan) Dunn.  She grew up in the Hebron Reformed Presbyterian Church.  Following high school graduation, she taught at Rural School for three years.

On February 2, 1945 in Idana, she married Ernest Elgin Sharp.  He preceded her in death on October 18, 2019.

Irene was a farmer’s wife and drove a school bus for the Riley County School District.  She took care of the bailing and enjoyed working with roses.  She was a member of the Hillside EUB Church until the church closed due to the expansion of Fort Riley, became a charter member of Countryside United Methodist Church and later the Clay Center United Methodist Church.  She was a 4-H leader and a member of UMW and WSCS.

She is survived by five children, Judy Seidel of Berkeley, California, Ivy Osborn and husband Lynn of Dardenne Prairie, Missouri, Gerald Sharp and wife Susan of Clay Center, Mary Jo McFadden and husband Robert of Houston, Texas and Tim Sharp and wife Tammy of Riley; one brother, Ronald Dunn and wife Delores of Clay Center; one sister, Evelyn Otto of Wakefield; ten grandchildren, Julee Breakstone, Valerie Barr, Denise Gooden, Monica Jackson, Dale Sharp, Barry McFadden, Daniel McFadden, Bill Sharp, Jayson Sharp and Becky Chase; eighteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents two brothers, Dale and Jack Dunn and four sisters, Jean Dunn, Betty James, Dorothy Tague and Maxine Greenlee.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at the Clay Center United Methodist Church with Pastor Gerald Sharp, Pastor Reuben Langat and Herb Mugler officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Riley Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the Clay Center Presbyterian Manor and Clay Center United Methodist Church.  Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Joretta Marie Varnadore, 89, of Wamego, Kansas, died Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at the Wamego Good Samaritan Society, surrounded by family, holding the hand of her beloved husband of 66 years, Thomas Kenneth Varnadore. She was a life-long resident of the area.

Joretta was born December 11, 1931, near Westmoreland, Kansas, the daughter of Maurice and Rosella Lauer Bennett. She attended Adams Peak School and then in 1944, moved with her family to Wamego. She graduated from St. Bernard’s Grade School in 1945 and Wamego High School in 1949.

Joretta and Thomas were married on April 30, 1955, in Wamego. He survives at their home.

Joretta worked for a short time as a waitress at a local restaurant and many years raising and repotting plants at Harmony Gardens Nursery. She was an active member of St. Bernard’s Catholic Church. She did volunteer work for St. Bernard's church and school and served as a Eucharistic Minister for the church and also at the nursing home, hospital and for people who were homebound. Joretta was a Cub Scout den mother and a homemaker. In her later years, she and Tom enjoyed going to the Casino.

Joretta is survived by her sons; Richard Varnadore (Cindy), Wamego, and Brian Varnadore (Heather), Alma; her grandchildren, Rolland Varnadore (Kira), St. George, Keegan Varnadore (Kara), Maize, and Averil Varnadore, Alma; her great-grandchildren, Landon and Breyleigh; and her brother, Don Bennett (Ann), Wamego. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings Wayne Bennett (Betty) and Rita Dornbusch (Harold).

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, April 27, 2021, at St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Wamego. Father Mike Peterson will be the Celebrant. Joan Luvern Manor, 74, of Wamego, formerly of Udall, Kansas died Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, following a battle with cancer. Joan was born on November 11, 1946, in Udall, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph F. and Susie Luvern Ketterman Shoemaker. She attended schools in Udall and graduated from Udall High School. Joan then attended college and ultimately earned her Doctorate Degree in education. Joan was an English and Speech teacher. She taught in several schools in New Mexico and Kansas. She was the Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum at the Goddard School District for 25 years. Joan was also an active member of the United Methodist Church in Wamego. She was very involved in many church activities and bible study groups. She enjoyed traveling, visiting several other countries and states, and taking many scenic photographs. She also loved birdwatching and tending her flower and vegetable gardens. Joan married Merril “Max” Manor on April 8, 2017. He survives at their home. Joan Luvern Manor, 74, of Wamego, formerly of Udall, Kansas died Wednesday, December 23, 2020 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, following a battle with cancer. Joan was born on November 11, 1946, in Udall, Kansas, the daughter of Joseph F. and Susie Luvern Ketterman Shoemaker. She attended schools in Udall and graduated from Udall High School. Joan then attended college and ultimately earned her Doctorate Degree in education. Joan was an English and Speech teacher. She taught in several schools in New Mexico and Kansas. Joan Luvern Manor

Dick's life began on October 1, 1935, in Leavenworth, KS.  He was the son of Joseph and Erma P. (Hawes) Schwartz.  Dick was a 1953 graduate of Leavenworth High School, where he excelled in athletics.  He went onto Ottawa University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree and earned athletic letters in football, basketball, and track, and was inducted into the Ottawa Hall of Fame.  Dick completed his formal education by earning his Masters in Business degree from the University of Southern California. He was united in marriage to Margie Bernhardt on August 9, 1959, in Marion.

  Dick began his military career in 1954 by serving in the United States Coast Guard and served his country later in the United States Marine Corps until his retirement as a Colonel in 1989. While in the Marine Corps, Dick served in Vietnam as an infantry company commander and earned several commendations.  He represented the Marine Corps in the All Service and national AAU track meets where he set a Marine Corps record personal best discus throw breaking the record of Olympian Bob Mathias. He later used those skills to coach the Marion High School discus throwers and sent two athletes to the state competition.  After retirement, Dick moved to Florida working with veterans effected by the Dow Chemical Co. "Agent Orange".  He was a humanitarian at heart, whether it was making sure those less fortunate had food on a holiday or giving away clothing to strangers, Dick was always thinking of his fellow man.  He was responsible for a local food drive during the Vietnam War asking for commodities from the community to feed to the children in Vietnam that he encountered.  Dick was a member of the American Legion, Veteran's of Foreign Wars, the Kiwanis, and Eastmoor United Methodist Church. He loved to golf, travel, and enjoyed driving his 1966 Mustang.

  His greatest joy was his family which includes his wife Margie Schwartz of Marion; children Thane (Judy) Schwartz of Marion, and Peri (Ray) Griffith of Chesapeake, VA.; grandchildren Landon (Stephanie) Schwartz, Bronson Schwartz, Richard (Kylie) Griffith, Ben (Ashley) Griffith and Daniel Griffith; and great-grandchildren Josslyn, Adeline, Easton,  Conley, and Ransom.

  Dick passed away on April 20, 2021, at St. Luke's Living Center in Marion.  He is preceded in death by his parents, and 12 siblings.

  His family will gather with friends on Friday, April 30th from 6-8 p.m. at Yazel-Megli Funeral Home, Marion.  A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, May 1, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Eastmoor United Methodist Church, Marion led by Pastor Darren Frazier and supported by the Marine Corps Reserve unit from Wichita.  Dick will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery, Washington, D.C. with full military honors.

Leigh Mary Parenteau Lambert, 42, of North Hampton, NH, passed away on April 17, 2021 at Salina Regional Health Center after an unexpected and tragic medical event. Johnson Funeral Home of Junction City, KS, is assisting the family with arrangements. Leigh was born on June 11, 1978, in Biddeford, Maine to Alan and Karen (Sparkowich) Parenteau. She attended the Biddeford School district and graduated from Biddeford High School Class of 1996. After graduation, she sought higher education. She completed 4 years of study at Simmons College in Boston, Massachusetts, then went on to earn her Juris Doctorate at the Stetson University College of Law in Gulfport, Florida. Because of her academic excellence and dedication, she was able to practice law for a number of organizations. She was a member of the BAR Association in both Maine and Massachusetts, acted as In-House Counsel for Yankee Alliance, was on the Yankee Alliance Lab Committee, and was on the Premier Lab Committee. Leigh was highly accomplished professionally, but she also set time aside for leisure activities. She loved cooking for her friends and family, entertaining friends and family at her home, and accessorizing her home with her talent in interior design. She never missed her sons' baseball, soccer, or hockey games. Leigh was a very outgoing and friendly person. She constantly smiled and had a wonderful personality. Above all she was a loving mother, dedicated wife, thoughtful daughter and sister, and loyal friend. They were married April 17, 1948. He passed away August 18, 2005. Ruth worked as Civil Servant in the Finance Department at Ft. Riley. She retired May of 1985. She was a lifetime member of the Ladies Auxiliary Post #8773. She was president of the Ladies Auxiliary and Cooties. She traveled all over the country to Ladies Auxiliary Conventions. She helped organize volunteers to build the new VFW building. She worked in the VFW kitchen and worked on a fund raiser to help veterans. You could always depend on Ruth to get things done when it came to veterans and their families. she was loved by everyone. Ruth is survived by her loving family: her three sons, Michael L. Asbury of Knoxville, TN, Galen R. Asbury (wife Pamela) of Junction City, KS and Anthony B. Asbury (wife Cheryl) of Atlanta, GA. Therefore, Charles had the opportunity to live in Hutchinson, Larned, Holcomb and Valley Falls during his school years. He graduated from Valley Falls High School with the class of 1963. Charles went to further his education receiving his Bachelor of Music Education from Emporia State University in 1967 where he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. He later earned his Masters of Music from Kansas State University in 1974. In response to the conflict in Vietnam, Charles joined the National Guard Reserves in 1970. He served in the National Guard until 1976. Charles began teaching vocal music for U.S.D. 475 in 1967 at the Junction City Junior High. While teaching there, he met his wife, Katharyn (Kathy) Rice. They married on March 29, 1969, at the First United Methodist Church in Junction City. They just celebrated 52 years of marriage. In 1969, Charles became the Vocal Music Teacher at Junction City High School where he directed Concert Choir, JC Chorale and numerous "Say It With Music" musical productions. Charles remained as the Junction City High School Vocal Music Teacher until the late 1980's. After spending many years teaching, Charles became the first Communications and Public Relations Coordinator for U.S.D. 475. While working in this capacity, he served as President of the Kansas School Public Relations Association for many years. After 41 years of service with the district, he retired in 2011. Charles was a member of Saint John's Episcopal Church in Abilene where he served on the Vestry and as Senior Warden. He was an active leader in the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas and with the Episcopal Cursillo Community. Charles was very active in the Junction City Community having served as the President of the Junction City-Geary County United Way and Junction City Association of Retired School Personnel. He was also a member of the Noon Rotary Club where he served as Assistant District Governor and was a Paul Harris Fellow for Rotary International. Charles shared his musical gifts throughout the community, performing and directing many Junction City Little Theatre Productions; singing for various clubs, organizations and for special events. Charles is survived by his wife Katharyn (Kathy) Volland; one daughter, Jill (Volland) Nelson and her husband David; three grandchildren, Isabelle, Kael and Emmalynne Nelson all of Junction City, KS; one sister-in-law, Jeanne Rice of Colorado Springs, CO; one nephew, Dustin Rodriquez of Long Beach, CA. Shirley J. Evans passed away at her home April 18, with her family by her side. She was born March 01, 1933, to Goldie (Martin) Kreiser and Arlie Kreiser. She was a member of the Christian Science Church and the Christian Science Society for 70 years. She worked in the Christian Science Reading room for 50 years. She is survived by her sisters Patty Wilburn and husband Robert of Junction City, Kansas, and Nancy Drumm of Manhattan, Kansas, a stepson David Evans and wife Marilyn of Manhattan, Kansas, and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Onette loved to crochet blankets, Afghans, rugs, potholders, toys or anything else that anyone asked her for.&nbsp; Her joy was making blankets for all her grandkids and great grandkids.&nbsp;

Caren J. Gross, 74 of Solomon passed away Sunday, April 18, 2021 at Salina Regional Hospital in Salina.

 She was born August 5, 1946 in Salina, the daughter of William and Estelle (Johnson) Crowdus. Caren grew up in Solomon and graduated from Solomon High School in 1964. She worked as a SRS administrative assistant in Salina.

She is survived by her two daughters, Melissa DeMars of Solomon and Jennifer Gross of Salina. Three grandchildren: Mason DeMars, Hadley Lawson and Hayden Lawson. One sister, Carol Simpson of Columbia, Missouri and numerous friends who she loved like family. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Guy Vernon Horton, 99, passed away peacefully on April 19th, 2021 at his home in Emporia, KS.

Guy was born in Towner, Colorado on July 10th, 1921 to Lou and Bonnie Horton. He was one of seven siblings.&nbsp;

Those who knew Guy would agree that he always had a smile on his face, and a great story to tell. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, traveling, working with his brother on the farm and gathering for morning coffee with his friends.&nbsp;

He drove for Francis Trucking, was a co-owner of the Saddlerock Cafe and later retired from Montgomery Ward to enjoy farming.&nbsp;

He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Donna J. (Wyckoff) Horton, his daughters Nancy (Jim) Pruett and Marla Gordon as well as six grandkids, six great grandkids and two great great grandkids plus many nieces and nephews. Guy was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers Leo (Grace), Don (Alberta), Dean (Doris), and Leland (Carolyn); sisters Wilma (Carl) Bennett and Peggy (Gene) Colby, daughter Donna Lou and sons-in-law Lee Winterbower and Dan Gordon.

Charles (Chuck) Robert Patterson, 79 of Dwight, Kansas, passed away April 16, 2021 at his residence. He was born March 25, 1942 in Amoret, Missouri, the son of Claude and Phyllis (Mitchell) Patterson.&nbsp;&nbsp;He married JoAnn Norris on February 23, 1962.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife JoAnn; brothers: James Patterson and Jerry Patterson.

A visitation will be held 5-7 p.m. Monday, April 26, 2021 at the Johnson Funeral Home. Willie Sue was born one of six children January 16, 1959, the daughter of Jack and Morden (Zackery) Cunningham. She moved to Junction City, KS in 1979. She was a native Ashland, AL and was educated in the Clay County and Ashland, AL School System. She confessed hope in Christ at a young age and was a baptized and confirmed member of the Bethel Baptist Church. Willie Sue was an accomplished professional cook. She worked and retired as a cook from Geary Community Hospital. She was known in her neighborhood as a caregiver feeding and caring for many children. Many of these children still to this day, call her "Mom". One of the most important rewards she received in her lifetime was time spent working as a volunteer at Second Missionary Baptist Church. The reward was for putting love over all with her caring virtues of clothing, feeding, kindness, humanity, gentleness and patience for effectively "sowing seeds" for God's Kingdom. He had been in Abilene most of his life marrying his high school sweetheart Mary Steinhauser on February 11, 2006 in Abilene. Nathan had his own small engine repair shop in Abilene for many years. Nathan had a collection of vintage Chevy vehicles and had the ability to fix anything or create anything. If someone had an idea, Nathan could make it. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. He is survived by his loving wife Mary of the home, daughters Ashley Montgomery of Salina, Isabella Montgomery of the home, son Alex Montgomery of Salina, brother David A. Montgomery of Abilene, four grandchildren and two on the way, along with many relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Parish Rosary will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2021 at the St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Abilene. He was a member of St. Andrew’s Catholic Church. He is survived by his loving wife Mary of the home, daughters Ashley Montgomery of Salina, Isabella Montgomery of the home, son Alex Montgomery of Salina, brother David A. Montgomery of Abilene, four grandchildren and two on the way, along with many relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents. A Parish Rosary will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday, April 22, 2021 at the St. Andrew’s Catholic Church in Abilene. Mass of Christian Burial for Nathan will follow the rosary at 10:00 a.m. with Father Don Zimmerman as Celebrant. His final resting place will be in the Mt. St. Joseph Cemetery near Abilene. Nathan J Montgomery - April 30th, 1965 - April 16th, 2021

Geneva “Genny” Dawson, the daughter of Harold, Jr and Margaret (Murphy) Connet, took her first breath into this world, October 15, 1937 in Manhattan, Kansas. Genny took her last breath on earth after enduring 9 long years of dementia and laboring her breathing all day in her home, surrounded by her loved ones. For her body called it quits at 5 p.m., Saturday, April 17th 2021.

She lived a beautiful long life full of many trials and tribulations, growing up with Christ in the center of her heart she was able to lead many to Christ through her love and conquer any trial that was put in her path. After marrying her first love, Burl Dawson, whom preceded her in death on February 25th, 1956, she had two beautiful talented children, Guy Dawson whom preceded her in death 23 years ago and Gayle Ward, to which she survives along with husband Brian Ward in Salina.

Later, June 6 1958, she married Kenneth "Kenny" Dawson in Abilene. He survives of the home. Together they had 5 more children, still all surviving. Which include her daughters Sue Gilbreath and her husband Mike of Olathe, Kansas, Gina and her husband Dusty Kuntz of Abilene, sons Scott and his wife Maureen Dawson of Abilene, Grant Dawson and his wife Terri of Salina, Josh Dawson and his wife Deanna of Bennington, fourteen grandchildren and several great grandchildren.

Following graduation at Abilene High School, Genny received her cosmetology degree. She worked for Rhea Millham from 1969 – 1971 and was a bookkeeper for Ken Dawson Construction from 1971 – 1974. Genny then started Genny’s Country Cupboard in 1976, along with her dream of opening a Bakery within. Where she became known as “the cinnamon roll lady" making GENNY'S famous cinnamon rolls for 24 ½ years until her retirement in 2000.

You could always find Genny in an apron as she enjoyed baking and cooking, not only for her large family but for friends and the community. If she baked goodies for you, you better believe there was love put into it because you see, love was mom's secret ingredient for all her recipes. "If you don't make it with love it'll never turn out just right" she always said. But her true passion was her love for Christ. Up until her last months, she could still tell you in complete details how Jesus came to see her at age 5 in her basement bedroom at 805 Bluemont in Manhattan. Telling her He loved her. She has lived and believed this her whole life, His love has shined through her eyes and poured out of her onto others. Her family, especially rocking her babies, being a mom, grandma and wife, were her biggest joys in life. 

Along with her first husband Burl and son Guy, she was preceded in death by her brothers Jerry Connet, and Murel Connet, and sister Judy Fells, and her parents.

Services for Genny will be 10:30 am Wednesday, April 21, 2021 at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Reverend Keith Less, Pastor Lindsey Brummer and Mr. Tim Johnson officiating. Burial will take place in the Abilene Cemetery, immediately following. A luncheon will be provided at the Elk's for family and friends to continue rejoicing farewell to her at her request. "With lots of prayers, songs and memories to all I love and enjoy doing for in my lifetime."

Her family would be honored to receive friends from 5:00– 7:00 pm Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Geneva Dawson - October 15th, 1937 - April 17th, 2021

Ruth Elaine (Heller) Beetch was born July 28, 1935 on the coyote ranch in Morris county east of Woodbine, Kansas, the daughter of Herbert L and Vera M (Adam) Heller. Married Wilbur Bass in September, 1955, was widowed in 1961, they had two children, Randy and Lynda. Ruth later married Melvin Beetch in April 1964 and widowed in February, 1998, they had two children, Sandy and Kevin.

Ruth attended elementary school near Pearl, KS. She then attended high school at DCHS in Chapman, Kansas graduating in 1953. She first worked for United Utilities in Abilene, left there to be a mother and housewife. Later Ruth went to work in Salina as an insurance agent at various agencies for a number of years. Ruth also worked for the Abilene Greyhound store, the Medical clinic in Abilene and Brown Memorial Home as a cook and receptionist until she retired in 2016. Ruth was a member of New Basel United Church of Christ and currently a member of the Emanuel First Methodist church of Abilene. She was a member of the Holland EHU Farm Wives group, and Chisholm Trail Quilt Guild, as well as a volunteer at Memorial Hospital and the Dickinson County Historical Society Heritage Museum. Ruth enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, volunteering in the community as a 4-H leader and and sharing her love of sewing with those around her. So much in fact, she was a member of the local quilt guild for many years. She also enjoyed watching KU and KSU sports on Saturday afternoons!

Ruth E. Beetch (Heller) - July 28th, 1935 - April 16th, 2021

William “Bill” H. Sesler, age 88, of Manhattan, passed away peacefully on Good Friday at Meadowlark’s Wroten House where he had resided since 2018. &nbsp;He is survived by his bride of 62 years, Donna Raye (née Bergsten) of Meadowlark’s Miller House.&nbsp; While the pandemic’s restrictions had physically separated them for 11 months, they were joyfully reunited on Valentine’s Day, their 62nd anniversary, earlier this year.&nbsp; Only the pandemic had prevented Donna from faithfully visiting her husband daily during his time at Wroten.

Bill was born and raised in Wamego during the Great Depression; shaped by that era and its values.&nbsp; He was a dutiful provider for his family, a careful planner, a worrier, but also fiercely independent in not wanting to rely on others for his care.&nbsp; &nbsp;

From early childhood Bill worked any number of small town jobs from cleaning the theatre to mowing lawns.&nbsp; He and his identical twin, Ben, put themselves through college at K-State courtesy the ROTC program.&nbsp; Bill received his Army commission on the day of his graduation and then served active duty for two years including a year in post-war Germany followed by 25 years in the reserves attaining the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Following his active service, Bill found employment with Nabisco in Portland, but returned to Wamego shortly thereafter due to a family illness that required his assistance.&nbsp; As a dutiful son and the closest sibling, he continued in this role for his parents which allowed his children to visit their grandparents on Sundays where a lively game of Gin Rummy was common.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Bill found employment at Kansas State University in the Purchasing Department at Anderson Hall where he remained for 47 years retiring as the Director of Purchasing.&nbsp; While devoting long hours, he really enjoyed working and the collegiality of his colleagues.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Energetic was an appropriate adjective for Bill who was known as a quick talker and fast walker.&nbsp;&nbsp;Tending the lawn deep into retirement burned off some of his bountiful energy.&nbsp;&nbsp;

However, he wasn’t all work as the family enjoyed many memorable West Coast road trips, and the amenities of K-State including productions at McCain Auditorium, and athletics as season ticket holders to K-State football during its lean years and basketball during its rocking heyday at Ahearn.&nbsp; He enjoyed a hearty laugh and did not miss Johnny Carson’s nightly monologue.&nbsp; Being able to stay up “late” with Dad to watch the monologue was a treat for his boys.&nbsp; In retirement, Bill and Donna enjoyed travel and touring nearby Kansas towns,&nbsp;lunching at locally owned restaurants.&nbsp; Until moving to Wroten, Bill faithfully decorated eggs for more than 60 years, each and every Easter.

Bill was the last surviving member of his family preceded in death by his parents, Guy and Ella, his older sister Betsy Nowels, and his older brother Bob Sesler and twin Ben Sesler.&nbsp; Besides his wife Donna, he is also survived by his boys, Tim (Myrla) and Chris, six grandchildren (Vanessa,&nbsp;Tatiana, Mikaela, William, Sabrina and Alicia) and 5 great-grandchildren (Bailey, Colette, Jackson, Dillon and Kian), and many nieces and nephews.&nbsp;

Services and interment will be held in early August in Wamego, Kansas.&nbsp; &nbsp;

Cheri Lynne Corbin-Welborn of White City died Wednesday April 14, 2021 peacefully at her home.&nbsp;&nbsp;Cheri was born October 29, 1948 in Emporia, Kansas to Leroy Corbin Jr. and Naoma Christine Walker.&nbsp;&nbsp;Cheri graduated in 1966 from Emporia High School and attended Emporia State University.

Cheri was a long-time employee at Dolly Madison where she enjoyed making everyone smile and enjoyed singing on the line.&nbsp;&nbsp;Cheri moved to Florida where she was proud of working at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.&nbsp;&nbsp;After returning to Kansas, she took a yearly vacation to Disney World taking her grandchildren and great-grandchildren to enjoy the experience with her.&nbsp;&nbsp;Cheri loved her family and talked often about when she worked with her brother Steve at his club in Emporia.&nbsp;&nbsp;The 4th&nbsp;of July was an important holiday for Cheri and every year had her family come for a BBQ and to watch the White City fireworks show.&nbsp;&nbsp;She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren during the summers.

Marjorie Marie Aspley Lichtenhan of Dwight, Kansas joined her heavenly family at the age of 91 on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. She graduated in 1947 from Sacred Heart Academy in Manhattan, and then furthered her education at Marymount College in Salina. Upon graduation from St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1950 she worked as a registered nurse at VAIL Hospital in Topeka on the pediatric and polio wards. Marjorie married William (Bill) Lichtenhan May 5, 1953 and celebrated over 59 years of marriage. Moving to the farm on Humboldt Creek Road was an adventure for this city girl. She was busy as a full-time wife, mother to five girls and a community member. Service to others was a constant in her life. She was on the Geary County Extension Council, served as a 4-H Club leader, and was a 65-year member of Humboldt Creek Extension Unit. In addition, she volunteered with the St. Clare House, participated in the Catholic Nurses Organization and worked as Geary County Farm Bureau Woman’s chairman. As an active member of St. Xavier’s Church, she was involved with Circle 2 Altar Society, was a Eucharistic minister and served on Salina Diocese Catholic Women Vicariate. In 1966 she returned part time to Geary Community Hospital working as a registered nurse for 29 years. Donating blood is life giving. She began during her nurses training donating to babies with the RH factor. As a lifetime Red Cross Donor and volunteer, she surpassed the 10-gallon pin and encouraged others to do the same. Traveling, whether a DeKalb seed trips or family vacations were a source of enjoyment for her with Europe being one of the highlights. Meeting people, caring for grandkids and playing lots of cards were fun for her. Her daughters include: Elaine Dean-Wamego, Janet &amp; Richard Haag-Emporia, Pam and Dan Boller-Junction City, Anita and Keith Ascher-Junction City and Vickie and Todd Kline-Dwight, Kansas. Grandchildren include: Brandon &amp; Dianna Dibben, Jennifer &amp; Brian Blume, Kristen &amp; Matt Dieter, John &amp; Jennifer Haag, Ruth &amp; Mike DeLange, Adam &amp; Katie Haag, Rachel Haag, Sarah &amp; Nigel Lock, Amy &amp; Chad Blockcolsky, Audrey &amp; Jason Worthington, Ray &amp; Susan Boller, Tonia Carlson, Jared &amp; Olivia Kline, as well as thirty-two great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.

Marjorie Marie Aspley Lichtenhan of Dwight, Kansas joined her heavenly family at the age of 91 on Tuesday, April 13, 2021. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2pm, Friday, April 23, 2021 at St. Xavier Catholic Church with Fr. Frank Coady officiating. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be at Johnson Funeral Home, Thursday, April 22, 2021 from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm and Rosary Service from 7:30 to 8 pm. Her sister, Dorothy Lukert, currently resides in Topeka, Kansas.&nbsp; Other siblings preceding her include: sister Cora Strosnider, and two brothers George and Roscoe Aspley. She graduated in 1947 from Sacred Heart Academy in Manhattan, and then furthered her education at Marymount College in Salina. Robert “Bob” W. McDiffett, 73, of Wamego, Kansas passed away April 13, 2021 at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City.

He was born November 4, 1947 in Topeka, Kansas, the son of Pat J. and Norma Jean Beagel McDiffett. Bob attended schools in Topeka, including Topeka West High School. He married Juanita Elaine Hathaway on March 17, 1990 in Rawlins, Wyoming. They made Wamego their home about 20 years ago.

Bob worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber of Topeka for several years before moving to Colorado and working as a coal miner. After moving to Wamego, he worked for Larson Construction until his retirement in 2012. He was also a past member of the United Rubber Workers Union.

Bob was an avid outdoorsman. He enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, and NASCAR races. He especially enjoyed attending his kids and grandkids events. He was also a movie fan, and could always remember historical times and events.

His survivors include his wife, Juanita, of their home in Wamego; two sons: John McDiffett (Cassia), Craig, CO, Russell McDiffett, Craig. CO; three stepdaughters: Donna Gill (Josh), Craig, CO, Doris Ceruti (Steve), Gillette, WY, Debbie Boyle, Westmoreland, KS; one sister, Patti Meade (Chuck), Rossville, KS; six grandchildren: Tiara, Jaci, Kelsey, Ben, Sheldon, Johnny; one great-grandchild, Addison, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and a son, Daniel McDiffett.

Family and friends will be celebrating his life on July 4th, 2021. The location and time will be announced closer to date of the event.
