Betty J. Gehrt - August 28, 1929  -  August 7, 2023

Ethan Randall Chapman, 28, of Grandview, Missouri, and formerly of Manhattan, Kansas passed away on Wednesday, August 2, 2023.

Ethan was born on October 24, 1994 to Scott and Angie Chapman in Great Bend, KS. Three years later, he became a big brother to Joshua Chapman. Ethan’s first seven years were spent in Great Bend and Topeka, KS. His earliest interests were construction trucks, books, AWANA club (at church) and sports. In 2001, he moved with his family to Manhattan, KS where he lived until 2019.

He attended Flint Hills Christian School, Eisenhower Middle School and then graduated from Manhattan High School in 2013. He grew up playing the sports he loved (soccer, baseball, football, swimming, track and especially basketball) as well as playing guitar. He excelled academically in his AP classes with special interest in English and History. Ethan valued being involved in youth group at University Christian Church where he participated in weekly Bible studies, youth conferences and mission trips, his favorite being to Haiti in 2013.

After high school, he attended Kansas State University, graduating in 2015 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Advertising and Public Relations. He was active in Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, intramural sports and had a special love for ultimate frisbee. Ethan loved attending K-State football and basketball games relishing the times he could rush the court or field with wins over big rivals. His craft beer snobbery started while working for The Fridge Wholesale Liquor, his college, part-time employer.

Ethan’s career path has included transportation, manufacturing and of course advertising. He started his dream job at DCA Outdoors in Kansas City, MO as Marketing Campaigns Coordinator on July 24, 2023.

Ethan was a voracious reader of history. It seemed he knew everything about world history and politics and willingly expressed his passionate opinions about all of it! As a college student, he became a huge fan of Liverpool FC and beer, frequently enjoying both at the same time. This love led to a trip with his dad to England to watch a Liverpool match in 2017. His sports attention shifted a bit in recent years to Formula One Racing and he could talk endlessly about every aspect of high-performance car racing.

On issues that were important to him, Ethan was resolute in what he believed was right and wrong; very black and white with no meandering in the grey. His views were researched and thoroughly thought-through. Family and friends were rarely successful in changing his mind! He was a man of deep emotions, the strongest of which was love for his family and friends. His devotion to the people he loved was deep and long-lasting.

Ethan chose to be a follower of Jesus as a child. Despite his passing due to violent evil in the world, we are comforted knowing his eternity with the Lord in Heaven is certain.

Ethan is preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Doyce and Bonnie Jones.

He is survived by both parents, Scott and Angie Chapman of Manhattan, KS; one brother, Joshua Chapman and his wife Raegan, of Salina, KS; paternal grandparents, Butch and Pat Chapman of Abilene, TX; and many aunts, uncles and cousins who love him dearly.

A celebration of Ethan’s life will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, August 11, 2023 at Crestview Christian Church, 3940 Excel Road, Manhattan, KS, 66502. Visitation will be held at the same location on Thursday, August 10 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Carolyn Lea “Care Bear” McMasters, 48, of Westmoreland, Kansas, died Monday, July 31, 2023, at her home. &nbsp;Carolyn was a life-long resident of the area.

Carolyn was born on May 26, 1975, in Manhattan, Kansas, the daughter of Kevin and Peggy (Colvin) Wyffels. &nbsp;She attended local schools.

Carloyn worked as a Paraeducator, helping children with reading difficulties. &nbsp;She also served as a Sign Language interpreter. She also worked in construction as a drywall sander. &nbsp;Carolyn loved to play pool and darts. &nbsp;She enjoyed NASCAR and was a Dale Earnhardt, Sr. fan. Carolyn adored her family, especially her “babies” and there were few things that she enjoyed more than sitting around a big bonfire with friends and family. &nbsp;Care Bear, we love you to the moon and stars.

Carolyn is survived by her daughters, Kimberlea Becklund and Harper Serbus, both of Westmoreland; her mother, Peggy Wyffels, Westmoreland; her grandchildren, Ethan, Ella, Kaden, and Elise; her sisters, Rhonda Jarvis (Jimmy), St. George, Pamela Voirol (Michael), Bella Vista Arkansas, and Mary Johnson, Redwood Falls, Minnesota, and her special friend, Kevin Serbus, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and nephews and friends. &nbsp;Carolyn was preceded in death by her father, Kevin Wyffels, her grandparents, William and Mary Colvin, and her cousin Jason Wyffels.

Carolyn Lea “Care Bear” McMasters

James Leroy “Jim” Palenske, 77, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away on Monday (July 31, 2023) at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Born September 29, 1945 in Manhattan, Kansas, Jim was the son of Edward Henry and Elinor Marie (Herbic) Palenske. He married Bonnie Songs on November 4, 1961 in Manhattan, Kansas and they celebrated 61 years of marriage. &nbsp;Bonnie survives.

Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved every minute he had fishing on his trips to Canada. He was a leader with the Wabaunsee 4-H Club and taught the group his skill of leather crafting. &nbsp;Jim belonged to the local CB Radio club with his handle “Double D”. &nbsp;Through this, he talked to and met many others who became lifelong friends.

Jim was employed as a Technician for Wamego Telephone Company for 27 years until his retirement in 2006. &nbsp;He previously helped farm with Lawrence Mertz, Glenn Wilson and Tom Dunn before going to work as an electrician for Bill Owens and later moving to the City of Wamego. &nbsp;He later became a Sales Representative for Bit-O-Gold Cheese where he sold and serviced milkers and bulk tanks before going to WTC.

Survivors include his wife, Bonnie; two daughters, Brenda Ridder (Chris) of Alma and Julie McIntyre (Jerry) of Wamego; eight grandchildren, Ethan Walsh (Tiffany), Tristan Walsh (Mariah), Clara Carter, Hunter Ridder, Harley Ridder, Chelsey McIntyre (Corey), Jessica McIntyre (Evan) and Shaylea McIntyre; six great grandchildren, Hallie Walsh, Kamryn Walsh, Braylyn Walsh, Blazye Walsh, Malia Walsh and Zayden McIntyre; a brother, Eddy Palenske (Sue) of Wamego; a sister, Joan Jackson (LeRoy) of Wamego; a brother in law, LaVaughn Jones of Holcomb, IL; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Palenske was preceded in death by his parents; a son in infancy, Michael Lee Palenske; and a sister, Hazel Jones.

Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

The family will host a celebration of Jim’s life on Saturday (September 30, 2023) from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. at the Alma Community Center.

Funeral services for Rosella A. Crook-Neal, age 79, of Abilene will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, August 10, 2023 at the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, with Pastor Stan Norman officiating. Rosella passed away Friday, July 28, 2023 at the Salina Regional Health Center. She was born May 18, 1944 in Abilene, the daughter of Clifford and Mabel (Forslund) Neal. Rosella graduated from Abilene High School and worked for Ehrsam’s in Enterprise for many years and then was a retail clerk for Russell Stover in Abilene before retiring. Rosella enjoyed bowling, bingo, puzzles, all animals, and especially her grandchildren. She was a forty five year member of the Eagles Auxiliary and served as a state officer. She loved traveling and going to Washington State with her sister Lorna to class reunions. Rosella is survived by her daughter Veronica Ramsey of Peculiar, Missouri, son Dwayne Ramsey of Olathe, Kansas, sister Lorna Christiensen of Abilene, daughter-in-law Amy Ramsey of Olathe, Kansas. six grandchildren Justin Ramsey, Jacob Haney, Ashley Haney, Addison Ramsey, Amielia Ramsey, Asher Ramsey, and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother LeRoy Neal. Rosella has selected cremation. Her final resting place will be in the Abilene Cemetery. Ty Ralph Gibson, 66 of Abilene passed away Wednesday, August 2, 2023. He was born May 21, 1957 in Abilene, the son of Bobby Ralph and Jenice Marie (Glenn) Gibson. Ty grew up in the Abilene area, attended the local school districts and graduated from Abilene High School in 1975. On September 4, 2022 he was united in marriage to Joy Byfield at the Eisenhower Rose Garden. She survives of the home. 

He worked for the Sante Fe Railroad, Hulschers Train Derailment Co. and his last employment was a foreman for Bob Bergkamp Construction. Ty had a passion for running heavy equipment, riding his motorcycle and his three dogs.

 Ty is survived by his loving wife Joy of Abilene. Daughter, Kelsey Nicole Allen and husband Kyle of Sabetha. Granddaughter Madi Allen and bonus children Scott Michael Sarapa of Abilene and Ashli Marie Sarapa of Hays. He is preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life will be at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, August 8, 2023 at New Trail Fellowship Church in Abilene. Family will receive friends Monday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home. The family wishes memorials be given to the Bluestem Veterinary clinic. Ty Ralph Gibson

David Louis Bond, age 80, went to be with his Lord and his son, David Louis Bond II, on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Abilene Memorial Hospital. He was born April 11, 1943, to John and Golda Bond in Russell, Kansas. He is survived by his wife Mary Ann (Hower) Bond, brother Fredric Bond (Sharron), sister-in-law Jerry Mitchell (Gary), and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by his father and mother, sister Lorita Von Niederhausern, brother John Glenn Bond, brother-in-law David Von Niederhausern, brother-in-law Gary Christie, and his son. David married his high school sweetheart, Mary Ann Hower, on August 27, 1961, in Russell, Kansas. David and Mary Ann moved to Salina, Kansas, where he was employed at Martin Marietta, later transferring to Wichita, Kansas. David moved his family back to Russell in 1963 and began working for Flock Oil Company. On August 11, 1963, David and Mary Ann became parents to David Louis. It was at that time David realized the importance of an education to support his family and enrolled at Fort Hays State College while continuing his work for the oil company. David graduated with a Bachelor’s of Science in Education degree in June of 1969. In the fall of 1969, David began his career in education, teaching fifth grade in Russell. In 1970, David earned a Master of Science degree in Administration from Fort Hays. In 1971, David moved his family to Hoxie, Kansas, where he was the K-8 Principal until 1975. In the fall of 1975, David became Principal at Kennedy Elementary/Primary School, Abilene, Kansas, serving 24 years. During his time at Kennedy, David was active in the Elementary Principals Organization, serving both state and national levels. In 1984, David was honored with the National Distinguished Principal award in Washington D.C. This was the first of many awards David earned during his career in education. On July 31, 1987, David earned Doctorate of Philosophy from Kansas State University, cementing his love for the Wildcats. In 1999, David retired from public education. David was devoted to doing what was best for all children Following his retirement, David spearheaded the organization for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Dickinson County including becoming a Big Brother himself. During David’s lifetime, he was an avid hunter and fisherman, participating in the Pro Bass Fishing tour. As he aged, he developed a love for golf, playing daily until his health declined. David enjoyed attending Kansas State sporting events, especially football and men’s and women’s basketball. David was involved in many community organizations, especially those involving the well-being of children. David had a deep love for his family, his friends, and the Wildcats. His sense of humor and love to tease will be missed by his family. Services for David will be Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 10:00 a.m. at Abilene City Cemetery with Mr. Roger Walls officiating. He was born April 11, 1943, to John and Golda Bond in Russell, Kansas. Margaret Crook, age 99, of Manhattan, died Thursday August 3, 2023 at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan.

She was born on October 6, 1923 in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Raymond Ross and Alice (Boyd) Taylor. She grew up in Topeka and attended local schools and graduated from Topeka High School with the class of 1941. Her grandparents were in the first graduating class of Topeka High School of 1871. One of her grandfathers lived in Gettysburg and attended the Gettysburg address. Her father and his brother were the sons of Taylor nurseries in Topeka and worked closely with Kansas State University Ag department and sent apple seedlings all over the U.S. They came to Oakwood farms in Topeka in 1849 and lived there for 85 years.

Margaret was married to William V. Crook in 1941 in Pueblo, Colorado. He preceded her in death in 1992. She then was married to Lark. D. May in Topeka in 1997, he passed away in 2005. She later was married to Wallace Jeffrey, he preceded her in death in 2019.

Margaret and William were blessed with four children: William V. Crook Jr., Bruce R. Crook, Thomas R. Crook, and Carol Anne Crook. Margaret worked for many years as an assistant to the Riley County Engineer's until her retirement in 1986. She was a member of the St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Manhattan. Her philosophy in life was to have a little fun every day. And she did! She loved people and could talk and laugh with the best of them.

In addition to her husbands, Margaret was also preceded in death by her son William “Billy” Crook Jr. and also her daughter Carol Anne Crook.

She is survived by her sons, Bruce Crook and Tom Crook and her step-son Gerry Jeffrey and step-daughter Dixie Coursen; also her 4 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren.

Judy Lee Luthi, 67, of Abilene, Kansas, passed away at home with her husband Loran by her side on July 31, 2023.

Judy was born September 22, 1955, to Myron and Leora Simnitt, in Clay Center, Kansas. She and her two sisters, Rhonda and Dawn, grew up on a farm north of Green, Kansas. Judy graduated high school from Clay Center in 1973. She chose to continue her education, attending college in Manhattan, Kansas, and then began working at Kansas State University in the Dean’s Office of the School of Business.

Judy married Loran Robert Luthi on April 10, 1976 in Green, Kansas. She worked at South Western Bell Telephone Company in Junction City, Kansas, at the time and then later decided to focus on her next adventure, running the farming business and raising a family with Loran. Judy and Loran began their family in 1980 with the first of their four children, Deedra, Raymond, Kimberly, and Melanie.

Judy loved her family. She didn’t hesitate when someone in her family needed something, she would always show up and would always be there whether on the other end of the phone or on the other side of a hug. In recent years, her grandchildren, whom all call her “nana”, really brought a joy to her life. She loved helping on the farm - she kept busy times running smooth because she was always a step ahead of the rest. Judy also really enjoyed traveling - she and her family took many trips together.

Judy is survived by many loved ones: her husband, Loran Luthi, her daughter, Kimberly Brungardt, and grandchildren Leora Brungardt and Helen Brungardt, her daughter, Melanie Luthi, and her family Marcus Craig, Sianney Craig, Mireyah Craig, and Marquel Craig, her granddaughter, Harlee McDaniel, her mother, Leora Simnitt, her sister, Rhonda Slingsby, her sister, Dawn Langvardt and husband Greg Langvardt, sister-in-law, Natalie Wood and husband Darrell Wood, and many nieces and nephews and their families.

Judy was predeceased by her daughter, Deedra Luthi, son, Raymond Luthi, father, Myron Simnitt, and brother-in-law, Warren Slingsby.

Patricia Suzanne “Sue” (Pacey) Chavey passed away on August 1, 2023, at the Good Shepard Hospice House in Manhattan, KS after a courageous battle with cancer.

The daughter of Franklin and Aurelia Pacey, Sue was born the oldest of 6 children, on September 12, 1947, in Concordia, KS. She attended the Hammerli one-room schoolhouse, followed by Miltonvale Rural High School.

She married Tom Chavey on February 12, 1966 at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Miltonvale, KS and together they raised their two children, Debbie and Ed. After farming in rural Cloud County, KS for 20 years they moved their family to Manhattan, KS. Sue graduated from Kansas State University with a medical technology degree in 1985 and enjoyed a nearly 25-year career in the Veterinary Medicine department there. She was especially proud of her work with rhino ferritins (iron proteins), which afforded her the opportunity to travel to Kruger National Park in South Africa, implementing new blood testing procedures.

Tom and Sue were married for more than 50 years and enjoyed traveling across 6 continents. They were avid K-State fans and supported the Wildcats as football season ticketholders for more than 30 years, where they could be found at each home game tailgating with lifelong friends.

They were members of St. Thomas Moore Catholic Church where Sue participated in the bell choir, served as a eucharistic minister, and acted a funeral luncheon coordinator. She supported the Manhattan community through her involvement in P.E.O., Little Apple Pilot Club and the Konza Prairie Quilters’ Guild. After the passing of her husband, Sue’s daughter Debbie became her traveling companion and the two especially enjoyed their last trip together to the Holy Land. Sue’s bond with her sisters was also a special one and the group enjoyed their annual sister’s weekends in fun locations. Her love for travel, K-State, and quilting was only eclipsed by the love for her family and watching her 4 grandchildren grow.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband Tom Chavey, father Franklin Pacey and brother Michael Pacey.

She is survived by her mother Aurelia Pacey, children Debbie (Scott William) Chavey Webb, Ed (Michelle) Chavey, grandchildren Nick (Kerby) Webb, Lindsey, Haley and Emma Chavey, siblings Marie (John) Green, David (Carol) Pacey, Loretta (John) Sampson, Polly (Scott) Martin, sister-in-law Mary Pacey and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will greet friends during a visitation on Thursday August 3, 2023 from 6:00 until 7:00p.m. at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

A Christian Wake Service with the Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home following the visitation.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday August 4, 2023 at the St. Isidore Catholic Student Center, 711 Denison in Manhattan. Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m. Friday August 4, 2023 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church Cemetery in St. Joseph, Kansas.

Patricia Suzanne “Sue” (Pacey) Chavey 

Dr. Warren Lamar Beard, DVM, age 65, died July 24, 2023 unexpectedly at his residence in Olsburg, Kansas. Warren was an equine veterinary surgeon and had worked at Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine since 2004.

Dr. Beard was born February 25, 1958 in Corpus Christi, TX to Nathaniel Gerald Beard and Vida Stephenson Beard. He was married to Dr. Laurie Beard, DVM, MS, Diplomate ACVIM and they have two children, Nat and Anne. He is survived by his wife, children, mother (Vida), sister Julie Borgan, brother Dr. Bradley Beard, niece Dr. Caroline Borgan, and nephew Zachary Borgan. Warren grew up in Houston and New Orleans. He discovered his passion for veterinary medicine by spending time with his uncle Dr. Edward “Booster” Stephenson (a veterinarian) and his wife Pat. He also spent a lot of time with his cousins Baret and Cris Stephenson.

Dr. Beard received his bachelor’s degree (Magna Cum Laude) and DVM degrees from Texas A&amp;M University in 1982 and 1983 respectively. He entered private practice in Dickinson, Texas, for two years before moving to Ohio State University to begin a residency in equine surgery. He completed his surgical residency and received a master’s degree in surgical sciences in 1988. In 1989, he became a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. He remained at Ohio State until 2004, before leaving to start a new position at Kansas State University.

Dr. Beard was well respected as a veterinary surgeon, in addition to his outstanding mentoring of veterinary students and residents. Not only was Dr. Beard known for his success regarding his career, he was also passionate about living life beyond his job. Dr. Beard enjoyed fly fishing (trout and salmon), skiing, hunting, and working cows. He served as an excellent role model for young veterinarians by demonstrating the importance of work-life balance.

The family will greet friends during a visitation from 6:00 until 7:00p.m. Thursday August 24, 2023 at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home in Manhattan.

A memorial service for Dr. Beard will be held 4:00 p.m. Friday, August 25, 2023 at the College of Veterinary Medicine (BI auditorium).&nbsp;

He remained at Ohio State until 2004, before leaving to start a new position at Kansas State University.Dr. Beard was well respected as a veterinary surgeon, in addition to his outstanding mentoring of veterinary students and residents. Not only was Dr. Beard known for his success regarding his career, he was also passionate about living life beyond his job. Dr. Beard enjoyed fly fishing (trout and salmon), skiing, hunting, and working cows. Gregory (Greg) A. Hibberd, born December 3, 1950, to Oliver and Helen Hibberd in Chicago, IL. 

Greg graduated from St. Margaret of Scotland grade school on 1964, and Brother Rice High School in 1968. He was a U.S. Army Veteran, serving in Viet Nam 1969-1971. Greg married Mary (Lolly) Graber July 18, 1981.

Carl Arlen Larson, age 79 of Leonardville, passed away Friday, July 28, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

He was born on July 3, 1944, in Manhattan, the son of Carl Oscar Emanuel and Clara Minnie (Layher) Larson.&nbsp; He graduated from Riley County High School with the class of 1963.

On September 19, 1965, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Clay Center, he married Jane Frieda Scheele.&nbsp; She survives at the home.

Carl was a lifelong farmer and loved building mini tractors.&nbsp; He was a member of the Walsburg Lutheran Church where he served on the church council for several years, Riley County Young Farmers and Farm Wives, Riley County Farm Bureau where he served as President and International Harvester Collector’s Kansas Chapter #3.

In addition to his wife, Jane Larson, he is survived by one daughter, Cindy Olson and husband Victor, III of Leonardville; one son, Dale Larson and wife Lotta of Leonardville; one sister, Joyce Troyer and husband Daryl of Manhattan; one brother, Roy Larson and wife Debbie of Leonardville; four grandchildren, Brianna Kurkowski and husband Max, Garrett Olson, Adam Larson, and Cajsa Larson and husband Daniel Axenbrant, and three great grandchildren, Clara Kurkowski, Kinsley Kurkowski and Freya Larson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Ralph Larson.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 4, 2023 at the Walsburg Lutheran Church with Rev. After his service in the Airforce Robert was an aircraft mechanic for Continental Air Lines. On Christmas Eve 1998 Robert married Helen Gabbard, He loved to make people laugh and could be counted on to liven up any conversation. Robert and Helen loved cats and provided homes to many over the years. Robert loved planes, trains, and cars, and had been a volunteer for the Abilene and Smoky Valley Railroad. Robert is survived by his wife Helen of the home, His stepdaughter Judy Germann of Abilene daughter Angela Petersen and her husband Steve of Burkburnette, Texas and son Bobby and Wife Shelley Rockwell of Albuquerque, NM. Clifford L. Gibbs, 80, of Abilene passed away on July 29 at Enterprise Estates. He was born November 2, 1942 in Salina, Kansas to Laverne and Doris (McCormick) Gibbs. He grew up and attended school in Salina, graduating with the with Class of 1961. In high school he worked for Designs by Cunningham Flowers in Salina, and later attended the School of Design in Denver, Colorado.

In 1964 he married Anne Reck and moved to Abilene. Cliff and Anne had two children, Michelle and Jimmy, and later divorced in 1986. Cliff acted as a gunfighter in Old Abilene Town from 1969 to 1975 and enjoyed every minute of it. His other hobbies were camping, boating and fishing, and as his children and grandchildren always said he didn’t know a stranger.

He started working for the City of Abilene in August of 1969, first as a Street Laborer, Water Superintendent, Purchasing Agent, and then as Director of Public Works. He retired in 2008 after working for the city for 40 years.

In 1995 he and Janet Korn were married. For many years he served on the Sister City Board and enjoyed travelling many times to Japan, saying how much he enjoyed the kids and the many people he got to meet. After Cliff and Janet retired in 2008 they enjoyed spending their winters in Florida at a retirement community and spending many hours at Walt Disney World over the years.

Cliff is survived by his wife Janet; daughters Michelle (Kellan) Kopfer of Longford and Tami (Paul) Gaston of Abilene; sons Jimmy (Cameron) Gibbs of Kansas City, MO, and Terry (Charlotte) Swearingen of Abilene; grandchildren Dallas (Cody) Jenne, Dylon (Patty) Jenne, Kelby (Joe) Kopfer, Riley Kopfer, Blaine Gaston, Joel Gaston, and Finn Gibbs; greatgrandchildren Ava, Tucker, Tripp and Owen Jenne, Van Monroe and Avery Taylor; a brother Tim of Rogersville, TN, and an aunt Bonnie Bookless of Wichita. Cliff was preceded in death by his parents.

Clifford L. Gibbs

Isaac William “Bill” Anders, age 93, of Manhattan, Kansas, died July 27, 2023, at Meadowlark Hills - Bramlage House.

He was born December 2, 1929, in Winfield, Kansas, the son of Morrell and Julia (Robieson) Anders. Bill was preceded in death by two siblings, Maurice and Julia.

On January 5, 1963, at the First Congregational Church in Manhattan, Kansas, he was married to Janet Joyce Frey.

Survivors include his wife, Janet, of Manhattan, three sons: Greg Anders and his wife Heather of Niceville, FL, Doug Anders and his wife Rebecca of Ventura, CA and Matt Anders and his wife Martha of Manhattan Beach, CA, five grandchildren; Matthew, Phoebe, Maizie, Jake and Natasha, and one great-grandson, Isaac.

Bill attended Southwestern College, the University of Arizona, and graduated from the University of Kansas with his bachelors degree in physical education. He earned his masters degree from Emporia State University in mathematics.

He served on Active Duty in the United States Navy from August 1953 to August 1956. Bill continued in the Naval Reserve until retiring as Captain.

After release from active duty, he and his brother, Maurice, hopped onto a freighter bound for Australia and the 1956 Olympics. After a time touring and working in Australia, they traveled around the world and returned home the fall of 1957.

A teaching career and more education led him to a career of government service in California. He worked as a mathematician at the Navy Civil Engineering Laboratory in Port Hueneme, followed by teaching math at Oxnard Community College.

Bill was an active volunteer in the community and spent significant amounts of time supporting youth activities including local Boy Scout troops, the Port Hueneme Little League, and the Boys and Girls Club of Port Hueneme. In recognition of his contributions to the community, he was honored as the “Port Hueneme Citizen of the Year” in 1990.

Several years following his retirement, they moved to Placitas, NM. In Placitas, Bill was very active with the Bernalillo United Methodist Church and helped them to acquire an adjacent property so the church could have a parking lot and he served in the church leadership for many years. He was also active with the Placitas Trails Water Board, being instrumental in implementing a new arsenic filtering system for healthy tap water.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, August 11, at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, KS 66502, with Reverend Donna Voteau officiating. Inurnment with military honors will follow at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley.

Isaac William “Bill” Anders

David Allen Spiker, age 69, of Wamego, Kansas died Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi in Manhattan. He was a long-time resident of the Wamego community.

He was born in Atchison, Kansas, the son of Ivan Robert and Ruth Anne (Shear) Spiker. David grew up in Holton and attended Holton High School.

He was united in marriage to Denise DePaemelaere on May 18, 2002, in Wamego, Kansas. Together they shared four children, Tabitha, Nick, Michael, and Katherine.

David served his country in the Army for 3 years with additional military service in the Army National Guard for 19 years. He followed his selfless acts to the service of others in careers as an EMT, Deputy Sheriff, and volunteer positions for his community. He volunteered for more than a decade as assistant fire chief and five years as fire chief for District 7. Additionally, he joined his military comrades as a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion organizations. His caring and compassionate nature was demonstrated through his time and compassion for helping others. He was also a skilled mechanic and worked on tanks at Fort Riley’s military base. &nbsp;&nbsp;

He enjoyed cooking, especially smoking ribs, grilling hamburgers, and trying new recipes. He loved to travel with his wife Denise to small towns to explore historical landmarks, museums and was a history buff for the Vietnam War.

David is survived by his wife, Denise Spiker, Wamego, KS; Daughter, Tabitha (Frank) LeSage, St. Mary’s, KS; Son, Nick (Valerie) Spiker, Wamego, KS; Blended children, Michael Van Leeuwen (Brittney) Spokane, WA; Katherine, or Gracie as only Dave called her, Van Leeuwen, Manhattan, KS; Sisters, Pat (Lowell) Fundom, Platte City, MO; and Elizabeth (Elias) Alvarez, Hurst, TX, and sixteen grandchildren.

David Allen Spiker

Clinton Davies Jr., age 78, died July 27, 2023, in Wakefield, Kansas. He was born to Clinton Sr. and Marvis (Hess) Davies in Clay Center, Kansas on June 8, 1945. Clinton grew up in the Clay Center community. He was a 1964 graduate of Clay Center Community High School. Clinton married Verna McGee and had three children, Clinton III, Laura and Michelle. Clinton and Verna later divorced. Clinton joined the Kansas Army National Guard and served seven years. One of his proudest moments in the National Guard was serving as a communications Sergeant and working communications for the Dwight D. Eisenhower Funeral. Clinton grew up in the Clay Center community. He was a 1964 graduate of Clay Center Community High School. Clinton married Verna McGee and had three children, Clinton III, Laura and Michelle. Clinton and Verna later divorced. Clinton joined the Kansas Army National Guard and served seven years. One of his proudest moments in the National Guard was serving as a communications Sergeant and working communications for the Dwight D. Eisenhower Funeral. Russell P. Goss, Jr, (90) of Melbourne, Florida, beloved child of God, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend to everyone he met, passed away at William Child’s Hospice House on July 25, 2023. There wasn’t a server, booth attendant, or volunteer that he didn’t learn the name of and thank personally upon parting. If you were lucky enough to know Russ, you liked Russ. Russ left this world just as he lived his life: with compassion, concern for others, and protecting the ones he loved. With a saved seat in Heaven, he rejoins his parents, brother, and sons, Kevin and Corey Goss. Russ grew up playing stickball in New Jersey and was recruited to the Brooklyn Dodgers Farm League out of highschool. Later, stationed in Kansas during the Korean War, he met the love of his life, Patricia Coup. Six months after meeting, the two were married. While attending Washburn University on a football scholarship, they welcomed the first three of five children. He later moved his family to Long Island, New York, and enjoyed a fulfilling career as an audio-engineer with Grumman Aerospace. Russ continued the tradition his father set before him, creating a slice of heaven on earth at his beloved Cotton Cove Cottages on Squam Lake in New Hampshire. He and Pat ran Cotton Cove Cottages for over 40 years, creating a magical place where generations of families made memories, forged bonds, and everyone fell in love with the genuinely good and kind man that was Russ. Russ and Pat retired in Melbourne, Florida where they continued their love story, calling her “Babe” and “My Girl” up until the end, enjoying 69 years of marriage at the time of his passing. Gerald (Gary) C. Markvicka, age 73, of Manhattan, died July 29, 2023 at the Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

He was born on December 8, 1949 in Loup City, Nebraska, the son of Alfonso and Dorothy (Pray) Markvicka. He grew in the Loup City area and graduated from Loup City High School with the class of 1968.

After he graduated high school, Gary was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was proud to serve his country and made the Army his lifelong career in Military Intelligence, learning to speak three foreign languages. He served two tours of duty in Germany during the Cold War and later in Operation Desert Storm. Gary earned many awards for his service in the Army, including a Bronze Star and Legion of Merit. He retired with the rank of CW3 after over 20 years of service to his country.

On July 27, 1970, he was united in marriage to Judy Hurt. She survives him at their home in Manhattan.

In addition to his wife Judy, he is also survived by his children: Shannon Kirk (Tom), Corey Markvicka, and Ryan Markvicka; his granddaughters: Delaney Kirk, Dylan Kirk, Gracyn Markvicka and Kendall Markvicka; his siblings Peggy (Pat) Toscano, Jane (Gery) Bonczynski, Mary Kay (Alan) Hemmer, Max (Julie) Markvicka and Roy (Sandy) Markvicka. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister Marlene Larchick.

Graveside services for Gerald will be held on Thursday August 10, 2023 at 1:00 p.m. at the Kansas Veterans’ Cemetery at Fort Riley, 5181 Wildcat Creek Road in Manhattan.

Amanda Luella "Betty" Arasmith, age 92, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at the Meadowlark Hills Retirement Community in Manhattan.

Betty was born on May 16, 1931, in Densmore, Kansas, the daughter of Wilbur E. and Martha G. (Davis) Arasmith. She grew up in the Densmore area and graduated from Lenora Kansas Rural High School in 1949.

After high school, Betty moved to Concordia, Kansas, where she attended and then graduated from the St. Joseph Nursing School in 1952. She dedicated over 40 years of her life to nursing and worked at what is now known as the Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. Betty's passion for her profession was evident in the care and compassion she provided to countless hospital patients over the years.

In addition to her many passions and accomplishments, Betty was known for her love of American cheese, Oreo cookies, and piping hot coffee. These simple pleasures brought her immense joy, and she delighted in savoring them during moments of relaxation.

Betty's life was a testament to her selflessness and caring nature. As a dedicated nurse, she devoted herself to the well-being of others, providing compassionate care to countless patients throughout her remarkable 40-year career. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her professional life, as she was a devoted mother and grandmother who always put her family first.

The cacophony of sounds that accompanied family gatherings brought her immense happiness. From the laughter of her grandchildren to the lively chatter among relatives, Betty cherished these moments of togetherness, finding solace in the warmth and love of her family.

Betty's legacy is one of love, compassion, and selflessness. Her presence in the lives of her family and friends will be deeply missed, but her memory will forever be cherished as an inspiration to all who knew her.

Betty was preceded in death by her siblings: Robert, Hazel, Agnes, Riley, and her twin brother, William, affectionately known as "Billy."

She is survived by her sons: Chad Arasmith (Heather) of Manhattan, Kansas, and Andy Newbrey (Michelle) of Towanda, Kansas, along with her grandchildren: Raven Wilson (Parker) of Lawton, Oklahoma, and Kyra Arasmith, Kael Arasmith, and Sawyer Arasmith, all of Manhattan.

A memorial service in honor of Betty will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2023, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Chapel in Manhattan, with Rev. Melanie Nord officiating. A private inurnment will take place at a later date.

She worked as a speech pathologist until her retirement. Lolly married Gregory A. Hibberd on July 18, 1981, in Chicago, IL. Lolly was preceded in death by her father Jerome F. Graber, sister Susan A. Graber, lifelong best friend Ann Mabbott Jones, and beloved husband Gregory A. Hibberd. Lolly is survived by her mother Mary E. Graber, sister Karen (Edward) Raftery, brother Jerome (Nancy) F.
