Michael Robert Ponton entered into the world on February 17, 1953. &nbsp;Michael reached his final mile marker to Heaven to his loving eternal Savior on May 25, 2023. &nbsp;Michael was born in Junction City, KS to Leo and Virginia Ponton. &nbsp;He grew up in the Manchester, KS area. &nbsp;He attended school in Longford, Kansas and graduated from Chapman High School.&nbsp;

He was united in marriage to Deborah Swenson on October 5, 1971. &nbsp;They had four children, daughters Amanda Davis (Chad) of Donnellson, Iowa, Amy Baugh (Caleb) of Minneapolis, Kansas, Angela Vanhese (Joseph) of Port Charlotte, Florida, and son Jeremy Ponton (Jackie) of Longford, Kansas. &nbsp;He was blessed with 18 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren. &nbsp;Two brothers, Pat and Greg Ponton, both of Manchester, Kansas also survive.

Michael farmed in the Longford area. &nbsp;He enjoyed farming with his draft horses which were his passion. &nbsp;He had the ability to buy a cheap malnourished horse and nurse it back to health. &nbsp;He was known for his "fat" horses. &nbsp;Draft horses were his absolute passion and owned many over the years. &nbsp;He raised registered Belgians and later registered Percherons. &nbsp;He forgot more about horses than most people will ever know. &nbsp;He passed his love of horses onto his family. &nbsp;He also enjoyed fishing and hunting, loved setting bank lines in the creek and river. He could fix anything and had the ability to keep any vehicle running.

He began employment driving a semi in 1971. &nbsp;He drove over a million miles and had delivered to every state in the US except Hawaii. &nbsp;He had no need for GPS. &nbsp;He was quick to volunteer his CDL services to the Baker University Wrestling Team, driving them to National Duals in Louisville, Kentucky after he had retired.

He loved his family and would do anything to help. &nbsp;He never knew a stranger and would give help to anyone in need. &nbsp;He was a strong man and raised his son as well as his daughters to be strong and not be afraid to work. &nbsp;He will be truly missed as he gave so much of himself to his family. &nbsp;We will be forever lost without him and will miss phone calls to him for advice about animals, navigation, how to work on a vehicle and everything in between.

Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home in Clay Center.

Vernon Lee Zeller, age 90 of Manhattan, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

He was born on December 15, 1932 in the Sedalia community, the son of Maynard Eugene and Marvel Ruth (Lee) Zeller.&nbsp; He graduated from Keats High School.

On May 17, 1953 in Riley, he married Ramona Darlene Schwab.&nbsp; She survives of the home.

Six months after being married, Vernon was drafted into the U.S. Army.&nbsp; This was the start of an adventurous 70 years of marriage and life.&nbsp; After the Army, Vernon began a career with the Seventh-Day Adventist selling books and later on as a manager in their furniture factories.&nbsp; This career led he and his family to Minnesota, New Mexico, Nebraska, Oregon, and even Canada.&nbsp; Kansas roots called him back to the farm and over the road trucking.&nbsp; Years later, Vernon found Custom Silage Harvesting.&nbsp; He and Ramona started a new adventure as owners and operators.&nbsp; This business opened the door to retirement and to many other family members working in the same career, including his son and daughter-in-law.

Vernon had a creative and inquisitive mind.&nbsp; He attended engineering school at Kansas State but was unable to finish.&nbsp; This didn’t stop his desire to continue building, creating, or improving anything he came across.&nbsp; He enjoyed his John Deere tractors, building and improving tools, and even building small machinery.&nbsp; He always had a great idea on how to make something work better.

In addition to his wife Ramona, he is survived by three children, Virginia White and husband Don of Mt. Orab, Ohio, Becky Siders of Manhattan, and Philip Zeller and wife Agnes of Dimmitt, Texas; two brothers, Jack Zeller (Nancy) of Encampment, Wyoming and John Zeller of Manhattan; one sister, Barbara Brownlee of Kansas City, Missouri; 12 grandchildren, 35 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Verona Schuermann, and three sisters, Virginia Zeller (twin), Corrine Snow and Lulu Hollowell

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2023 &nbsp;at the Sedalia Community Church with Pastor George Goddard officiating.&nbsp; The family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.&nbsp; Burial will be in the Sedalia Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for the Manhattan Seventh-Day Adventist Church or Sedalia Community Church.&nbsp; Contributions may be left in care of the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

Vernon Lee Zeller

Donald “Don” Lee Funk of Evergreen, Colorado passed away on May 19, 2023. Don was 90 years old.

Don was born on June 13, 1932 to his parents Adolf and Olga (Weinbrenner) Funk at their home in Hope, KS. He graduated from Hope High School in 1950. Following high school, he attended Kansas Wesleyan and then transferred to the ROTC program at Kansas State University. He graduated from the ROTC program in 1955. He was commissioned into the United State Air Force as a pilot and was honorably discharged after 9 years of service.

Following his discharge, he flew for Pan American World Airways for 28 years. San Francisco was his home base until November 1989 when he retired to Evergreen, Co. During his years at Pan American, he met his future wife, Hannelore “Lore” Busse, who was serving as an airline purser. Don and Lore were married in Germany on February 11, 1983. They were married for 32 years.

Don loved the outdoors and his favorite pastimes of hunting, fishing, boating, golfing, and working in his yard reflected that enjoyment. For most of his life he had Yellow Labs or Golden Retrievers by his side. He was a member of the Masons Cyrus Lodge #288 in Hope, KS from 1963 to 2021. He held the rank of Master Mason. He was also an active volunteer and member of the Blue Spruce Kiwanis located in Evergreen, CO. He was a supporter of higher education for many years by funding scholarships for Hope High School graduates and for students at Kansas State University. He also funded college saving accounts for all of his great nephews and nieces. Don was preceded in death by his wife Lore, his parents, and brother Willis Lloyd Funk.

Don is survived by a sister-in-law Shirley Funk of Oakley, KS, a nephew, Doug (Kathy) Funk of Lawrence, KS, and nieces Terri (Chris) Albers of Oakley, KS, Susan (David) Molstad of Ellis, KS, and Kathy (Blake) Arnberger of Colby, KS. He had 11 great nephews and nieces and 1 great- great nephew and 3 great-great nieces.

A graveside service will be held at the city cemetery in Hope, KS on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at 11 a.m. A celebration of life service will be held at Mount Vernon Canyon Club in Evergreen, CO on Friday, June 16, 2023 at 1 p.m.

She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Grace, Anna, Mae, Mabel, Dorothy, Carrie and brothers Harry, Lawrence, George and Paul and son Paul and son-in-law Ben Anguiano.

 She is survived by her husband of 72 years and daughters Debbie (Rory) and Becky (Jim). Eight Grandchildren and two bonus grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and two bonus great-grandchild and many nieces and nephews. There were many she considered family. She just loved family.

 Funeral Services for Elva will be 1:00 p.m., Thursday, June 1, 2023 at Danner Funeral Home with Pastor Gordon McClure officiating. Burial will follow at Bethel Cemetery. Elva M Elliott - December 29th, 1933 - May 28th, 2023

Donald G. Hecke, 86, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday (May 24, 2023).

Don was born May 20, 1937 in Campbell Hill, Illinois. He married Linda Saville on June 28, 1963 in Manhattan, Kansas. &nbsp;She preceded him in death on June 19, 2009.

Mr. Hecke served his country in the U. S. Air Force and had been a member of the Manhattan and had been a member of the Manhattan American Legion Post No. 17. He loved racing the area dirt tracks, driving for 13 years. &nbsp;He enjoyed watching Nascar and Outlaw Sprint races. Clint Bowyer and Kyle Larson were among his favorite drivers. He also enjoyed fishing and competing in antique car shows, winning several shows in the area.

Don was a dedicated and hard worker. He managed several auto salvage businesses over the years, beginning at A-1 Auto Salvage and lastly for M &amp; M Auto Salvage until his retirement at age 82.

Survivors include a son, Lee Hecke (Amy) of Wamego; a daughter, Donna Hecke (Bryan) and two grandchildren, Connor Hecke and Tyler Hecke.

&nbsp;Mr. Hecke was preceded in death by his parents; a granddaughter, Rae Lin Hecke; two brothers, Earl H. Hecke and Wilbert Hecke; and a sister, Dorothy Shevetz. &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego. Private family services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home to be given to the family who will decide on a charity at a later date.

She was born January 12, 1957 in Salina, the daughter of Oral (Dale) and Betty Ann (Vavricek) Baker. She was united in marriage to Beuford Putman June 12, 1988 in Abilene. He, along with her parents and brother Tommy Baker, preceded her in death. Barbara is survived by cousins, Bonnie (Vavricek) Dunn, Sammy Vavricek, Patty (Vavricek) Fleming, Billy Vavricek, Deb (Baker) Ramen, a step-son, Kevin Putman and numerous friends.

Barbara J. Putman

Lorraine (Sjostrom) Barnhart, 92, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2023, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas.

Lorraine was born on December 30, 1930, in Athens, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Ernhard Sjostrom and Otelia Burnside. She graduated from Waverly Central Schools, in New York.

On December 7, 1946, in Athens, Pennsylvania, Lorraine was united in marriage to Fred Barnhart Sr. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage, before his passing in 2014.

&nbsp;Lorraine (Sjostrom) Barnhart, 92, of Wamego, Kansas, passed away Thursday, May 25, 2023, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, Kansas.

&nbsp;On December 7, 1946, in Athens, Pennsylvania, Lorraine was united in marriage to Fred Barnhart Sr. They enjoyed 68 years of marriage, before his passing in 2014.

Lorraine was a homemaker and devoted her life to her family. She loved to read and especially enjoyed baking for her family. Lorraine and Fred lived in Waverly, New York for over 50 years, before moving to Concord, North Carolina in 1999 and eventually moving to Wamego in 2005.

Lorraine is survived by her three sons: Fred Barnhart, Jr. and wife Mary of Phoenix, New York, Jeff Barnhart and wife Laurie of Raleigh, North Carolina; Mike Barnhart and wife Kim of Wamego; and several grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Fred Barnhart Sr.

&nbsp;Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home. A private inurnment will be held at a later date. Memorials are suggested to the Good Shepherd Hospice House and may be left in the care of the Stewart Funeral Home, PO Box 48, 66547, Wamego, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Fred Barnhart Sr.&nbsp;Cremation arrangements are in the care of Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home. Ricky Allen Neuffer, 70, passed away Monday, May 8th, 2023 at his home in Manhattan.

Ricky was born in Chicago, IL on December 3, 1952, the son of the late Betty June (Nielson) and Robert Neuffer. He served in the military and worked as an assembly man in the refrigeration manufacturing.

Ricky is also survived by three brothers, Daniel (Julie Jenks-Neuffer) E. Neuffer, of Manhattan; Steve Neuffer and Dave Neuffer, both of Tennessee. Ricky is preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Jack Neuffer

Daniel George Davis, Sr., age 66, of Manhattan, passed away Friday, May 12, 2023.

He was born on December 22, 1956 in Salina, the son of Willard and Mavis Francis (Sandquist) Davis.

He married Cherie Ann Jensen on January 28, 1983.

Danny (Lloyd) was a jack of all trades, who enjoyed tinkering with and fixing things, even if they weren’t broken.&nbsp; He loved working in his yard and garden, and you could always hear him whistling various tunes.&nbsp; He was a devout Catholic who attended all three Catholic Churches in Manhattan.

He is survived by his wife Cherie Ann Davis of Riley; one son, Daniel George Davis, Jr. and Kasse of Riley; two daughters, DeDee Danielle Davis and Summer Rae Davis, both of Riley; one granddaughter Cherie Jean Jones of Riley; his father, Willard Davis of Abilene; five brothers, Greg Davis (Debbie) of Abilene, Bruce Davis (Deborah) of Powhatan, Virginia, Lee Davis (Yvonne) of Salina, Jeffrey Davis (Debbie) of Abilene, and Terry Davis (Jeff) of Charlotte, North Carolina; and three sisters, Cindy Neill (Mark) of Emporia, Denis Neill of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Glenna Phillips (Steve) of Salina.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Mavis Davis, and his mother-in-law, Dee Jensen.

Susan died on May 13, 2023, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka.

She was born on April 22, 1951, in Great Bend, Kansas and is the daughter of Robert Raymond and Mary Lee (Stewart) Scott who preceded her in death.

She married Dennis Angle in 1975 and later divorced. She then married Dr. Lane Marshall, former dean of Landscape Architecture at Kansas State University who preceded her in death in 2003.

Survivors include her children Paul Angle, 45 (Josh) of Junction City and Lilly Marshall, 25 of North Kansas City, MO. Other survivors include her three brothers Billy Hall (Linda), Patrick Scott (Gia) and Mike Scott (Nancy) and numerous nephews, nieces, grandnephews, and grandnieces.

Susan earned her undergraduate degree in Library Sciences at Emporia State University. She later received her master’s degree in counseling and a Ph.D. in counseling from Kansas State.

Susan was employed at Kansas State from 1976 until she retired in 2013. Besides working in the K-State counseling services office she is credited with creating and directing the Leadership Studies program at Kansas State. She retired with the title of Founding Director of the Staley School of Leadership Studies at Kansas State University. To honor her service at Leadership Studies the faculty and staff there established the Susan M. Scott Community Leadership Award.

Another noteworthy accomplishment during her KSU days was when she co-authored, along with Bob Shoop, a book called “Leadership Lessons from Bill Snyder” in 1998.

Besides at K-State, Susan also used her leadership abilities throughout the Manhattan community. Her early work with the Rape Survivors Support Group was the start of The Crisis Center of Manhattan. She co-founded the Riley County women’s political caucus. In the 1980s, she worked with others to establish a sister city relationship with Nindiri, Nicaragua. And she formed a community group to advocate for progressive public school learning activities.

Her community activism in later years was as one of the founders of PFLAG, beginning a support group for family members of the LGBT community. At K-State, Susan co-chaired the Task Force on Retention of Minority students, which brought about many changes, significantly, the establishment of an office of diversity.  Using the same task force model, she studied and advocated for adult students, women students, gay, lesbian, and bi-sexual students.  Susan was a woman of many rare gifts and talents who generously devoted them all in service to progressive change.

In lieu of flowers the family suggests donating to the Staley School of Leadership Studies at Kansas State University. Galen Louis Prestwood, age 98, of Manhattan, passed away May 13, 2023, at Ascension Via Christi Village after a brief illness after entering the nursing home on May 12th.

He was born April 5, 1925, in Manhattan, the son of Lewis and Viola (Weber) Prestwood.

Galen graduated from Manhattan High School with class of 1943.

His mother passed away when he was younger and he and his dad farmed on several places in the Cedar Creek Community. He had also worked for the Corp of Engineers at Tuttle Creek Dam and had managed an apartment complex for several years.

Galen loved to fish, was an avid reader, was in a bowling league for many years and enjoyed hunting when he was younger.

He was married to Lorita “Rita” Joan Nordgren on July 23, 1950 in Olsburg, Kansas. Lorita preceded him in death on January 14, 2015. He was also preceded in death by his sister Marian Hopkins. (They did not list the brother in Marian’s obituary)

Survivors include his three daughters: Kathi Dixon of Manhattan, Brenda Randall of Blue Springs, MO, and Joni Smith and her husband Robert of Manhattan; six grandchildren: Jesse Dixon, Jamie Randall, Kelly Randall, Dustin Smith, Joel Smith and Casey Smith; and four great-grandchildren: Madison McDonald, Beckett McDonald, Ava Smith and Aly Smith.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Carnahan Creek Cemetery, north of Manhattan, with Trish Cassinelli officiating.

Haley Nicole George, age 18 of Manhattan, passed away Monday, May 15, 2023.

She was born on July 22, 2004 in Hiawatha, Kansas, the daughter of Jason Christopher George and Brandy Marie Owen.&nbsp; She was baptized in the Green United Methodist Church, attended the Green Christian School and graduated from Manhattan High School.

Haley was a waitress at IHOP in Manhattan.&nbsp; She loved listening to music, shopping, and hanging out with family and friends.&nbsp; In school she participated in volleyball, softball, cheerleading and was involved with Young Life when she lived in Missouri.&nbsp; She was a daughter, sister, aunt, friend, granddaughter and she was loved.

She is survived by her mother, Brandy Owen (Chad) of Savannah, Missouri; her father, Jason George of Green; one sister, Hannah George (Hunter) of Savannah, Missouri; one nephew, Hudson Reys; one niece, Haislei Reys; her grandparents, John and Janice George of Green, Rick and Carol Owen of Green and Annette VanEpps of St. Joseph, Missouri; her great grandmother, Donna Owen of Green; and her aunts, Jennifer Rodecap (Will) of Green and Mandy Campbell (Josh) of Manhattan.

She was preceded in death by her uncle, Jeff George and great grandmother, Maxine Friederich.

Jerrol Lynn Springer, age 83, of Westmoreland, passed away Thursday, May 11, 2023, at the Good Shepherd Hospice House in Manhattan, KS.

He was born on June 25, 1939, in Manhattan, the son of Carrol and Lillian Bell (Anderson) Springer. Raised in the Blue Valley River vicinity near Garrison on a farm in the Carnahan Creek area, he was the 5th&nbsp;child of seven—one brother and 5 sisters. He spent countless hours outside exploring, collecting arrowheads, fishing, and hunting, which led to such a deep outdoor connection that he often said, “Nature is my church.”

He graduated from Randolph High School in 1958 and continued higher education at Pittsburg State University on football and track scholarships. He completed his Bachelor's and Master’s of Science degrees in Education from Kansas State University in 1963.

Jerry married Sharon Kay Toburen on June 2, 1962, at Swede Creek United Methodist Church. Together, they had 3 children, Kim, Pam and Doug. Family time was mostly spent at Carnahan Creek, fishing, swimming, and camping—a tradition that he continued with his grandchildren. He also loved watching and attending KSU football and basketball games.

Jerry began his coaching and teaching career in 1963 in the U.S.D. 323 Westmoreland School District, retiring in 1995 after 32 years. He taught biology, but his true passion was teaching physical education and coaching/mentoring his students. He coached many sports including football, basketball, track, and softball, taking great pride in receiving League, Regional and State Championships. Strong bonds were formed during these times, as words from his students and athletes attest: “He always coached with his heart, saying, ‘The sun always comes up tomorrow’ after a loss.” “Always had a heck of a smile for everyone.” “He touched a lot of lives through coaching, but he was much more than that—a mentor!” “Genuine and caring to all he knew, he made everyone around him feel special.” “He built confidence in us when it was lacking.” ”He always challenged us to do more/be more... On the court, in the classroom, and in life!”

In retirement, Jerry created many woodworking projects, which he shared with family and friends. He also gardened, sharing his delicious homegrown tomatoes and other produce with family and neighbors. He loved competing in the Masters and Senior Games track programs, which allowed him to travel and compete in many states, including at the national level. His favorite events were the discus and hammer throw, in which he excelled and won many competitions.

He is survived by his wife Sharon Springer of Westmoreland; two daughters, Kim Clopton and husband Robby of Liberty Hill, Texas, and Pam Lauer and husband Joe of Olsburg; one son, Doug Springer and wife Jenny of Wamego; three sisters, Vona Leckey of De Smet, South Dakota, Carolyn Kershaw and husband Charles of Young, Arizona, and Pati Casey and husband Scott of Westmoreland; six grandchildren, Makynna Hood, Garrison Clopton, Jarrid Lauer (Jana), Laurel Wahl (Chris), Jake Springer, and Sara Springer; and one great grandson, Reddick Lauer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Gyle “Bud” Springer, and two sisters, Jean Walla and Ky Reece.

The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. on May 25, 2023, at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on May 26, 2023, at the Carnahan Church, south of Olsburg. Inurnment will be in the Carnahan Creek Cemetery. Per his wishes, an outdoor picnic at the Carnahan Church will conclude the celebration. Please wear casual lake attire (yep, like shorts, jeans...).

He loved competing in the Masters and Senior Games track programs, which allowed him to travel and compete in many states, including at the national level. His favorite events were the discus and hammer throw, in which he excelled and won many competitions.He is survived by his wife Sharon Springer of Westmoreland; two daughters, Kim Clopton and husband Robby of Liberty Hill, Texas, and Pam Lauer and husband Joe of Olsburg; one son, Doug Springer and wife Jenny of Wamego; three sisters, Vona Leckey of De Smet, South Dakota, Carolyn Kershaw and husband Charles of Young, Arizona, and Pati Casey and husband Scott of Westmoreland; six grandchildren, Makynna Hood, Garrison Clopton, Jarrid Lauer (Jana), Laurel Wahl (Chris), Jake Springer, and Sara Springer; and one great grandson, Reddick Lauer.He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Gyle “Bud” Springer, and two sisters, Jean Walla and Ky Reece.The family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. on May 25, 2023, at the Anderes-Pfeifley Funeral Home.A Celebration of Life service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on May 26, 2023, at the Carnahan Church, south of Olsburg. Sheryl K. Bleakley, 77, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away on Monday, March 13, 2023. Cremation will take place. A graveside service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at Highland Cemetery in Junction City, Kansas. She was born on April 17, 1945, in Junction City, Kansas to Max and Ruth (Dowdell) Foland. Sheryl was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family, as often as she could. Sheryl was an amazing cook and showed her love through food. On December 28, 1962, she married Dial Bleakley, and together they raised three boys. Sheryl is survived by her loving husband, Dial of the home; three sons, David (Dorothy) Bleakley of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, Keith (Cindy) Bleakley of Topeka, Kansas, Kent (Lori) Bleakley of Topeka, Kansas; eight grandchildren, Matthew, Connor, Nathan, Heather, Katelyn, Cole, Jeff, Katie; six great grandchildren; and her sister, Janice (Danny) Goodman of Junction City, Kansas. &nbsp;Florence Lucille “Lucy” Burgess, 80, of Wamego, passed away on Friday (May 12, 2023) at Good Samaritan Society – Valley Vista in Wamego.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Born September 24, 1942 in Waverly, Kansas, Lucy was the daughter of John “Jack” and Beatrice (Harrison) Williamson.&nbsp;&nbsp;She married Dwight Burgess on June 1, 1963 in Wamego.&nbsp;&nbsp;He survives.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Lucy was a member of the LaClede Baptist Church.&nbsp;&nbsp;An avid reader, Lucy also enjoyed cooking, taking walks, going to country music shows and traveling with Dwight, especially to see the Rocky Mountains. Lucy loved taking care of her cats, but her greatest joy was the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Lucy was employed as a clerk for Kaw Valley Bank for 25 years until her retirement.

Lucy Burgess

Gary Andrew Pryor, 67 of Manhattan, Kansas, passed away peacefully at Orlando Regional Hospital in Orlando, Florida on April 29, 2023. He fought a long battle with cancer.

Gary was born in Manhattan, KS on August 2, 1955 to Harold Andrew and Marjorie Jean (Horne) Pryor. He grew up in Hutchinson, KS. Active in Boy Scouts, Gary reached the rank of Eagle. He graduated from Hutchinson High School in 1973 and Hutchinson Community College in 1975. He went on to Kansas State University and graduated with a degree in History.

Gary married Debra Dionne Dickson on December 31, 1977, in Hiawatha, KS. They spent the first few years of marriage living in Great Bend, Marysville and Assaria, where he built houses. They moved back to Manhattan to raise their family. Gary taught Building Trades at the Manhattan Area Technical College for over 20 years. He was so proud of his students as they built a new house each year.

Gary loved the outdoors. He enjoyed camping and canoeing. He canoed the Boundary Waters numerous times with family, friends and the 4-H Adventurers. Gary served as a Boy Scout leader for his son’s scout troop. In recent years, bluegrass music was his passion. Every September you could find Gary and Deb at the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, Kansas, jamming with friends.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife Debra Dionne (Dickson) Pryor, son William (Bill) Andrew Pryor (Livie Olsen) of Manhattan, KS, daughter Lisa Dionne (Pryor) Essmiller of Clermont, FL; 3 siblings: David (Deana) Pryor of Mount Hope, KS, Barbara Albro of Goddard, KS, and Dodi (Dale) Dickson of Shawnee, KS; six grandchildren: Jayden, Gracelyn and Easton Essmiller, Solvie, Myla &amp; Finley Bennett, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends at 9:00 am, Friday, May 19th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home, followed by a funeral service at 10:00 a.m. A Celebration of Gary’s life will be held from 1:30- 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 19th, at the Man Kan shelter house at Tuttle Creek River Pond Area, Manhattan, KS. Bring lawn chairs and your acoustic instruments to join in honoring Gary with the music he loved.

Gary Pryor

John Leslie Sheets, 77, of Chapman, Kansas, passed away at his home on May 4, 2023 surrounded by his loved ones. John overcame losing his father at nine years of age and losing his only son, 14-month-old Aaron, to persevere and go on to live an exemplary and accomplished life. John was born on October 19, 1945 to Harold and Pearle (Lundine) Sheets in the Rural Center community south of Abilene. It was here on nearby Turkey Creek, alongside his brothers, that his love of hunting and fishing initiated a lifetime love of the outdoors.

He attended Rural Center Elementary and graduated from Chapman High School in 1963.

In January of 1966, he was drafted into the United States Marine Corp. and was sent to San Diego, CA for boot camp, followed by seven months in Vietnam as an equipment mechanic. He was honorably discharged at rank of E-5 in December of 1968 after serving 7 months in Vietnam. He proudly served on the Chapman Color Guard for 58 years.

In 1970, he married Annette “Shotsy” Koland and had four children: Stashia, Aaron, Tisha, and Dara. Aaron died at the age of 14 months from complications of the flu.

He began a long and dedicated career in civil engineering after he received his Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from the University of Kansas in January of 1972. He was a project engineer in charge of land surveying, construction staking, inspection and construction testing for Associated Engineers for five years before he and his partners created Kaw Valley Engineering in 1982. Over the years, they opened offices in Junction City, Emporia, Garden City, Lenexa, Parkville, Riverside, Salina, and Wichita.

He was president of KVE until he retired in May of 2012 after putting his stamp on many projects all over the state of Missouri and Kansas, which included many improvements to his local community of Chapman, Kansas.

In 1989, their daughters introduced John and Shawni Britt Knopp to one another and in 1990, they married and began a lifelong friendship. He added a daughter, Nicole Knopp, and a son, Ryan Knopp, to his family. Not only was he a dedicated engineer, but he also brought the same work ethic and integrity to his family relationships, his friends, and to his alma mater Kansas University. A devoted family man, he was a much loved, son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, husband, and great grandfather, who took time to visit and enjoy activities with all, oftentimes injecting a word of advice and wisdom for good measure. Also a loyal friend, he enjoyed the camaraderie of golf with his buddies, along with their daily morning coffee breaks. The only events that could disrupt those activities were time with family, and a KU basketball or football game. He was a staunch supporter of KU athletics.

John is survived by his wife Shawni Sheets of Chapman; his daughters Stashia Sheets Hardman, Tisha Sheets Lidington, Dara Sheets Norris, all of League City, Texas; and Nicole Knopp Nies of Denver, Colorado; and son Dr. Ryan Knopp of Manhattan, Kansas. He also leaves behind 14 grandchildren: Halle, Peyton, Keller, Ryder, Reese, Hudson, Cassie, Berklee, Hastings, Amelia, Landon, Allison, Brody, Kyler; one great grandson Chapel; one brother Ray Sheets of Shell Knob, Mo.; sister-in-law Audrey Sheets of rural Chapman, and many nieces and nephews who adore him.

John was preceded in death by his parents Harold and Pearle; his brother David; his son Aaron Sheets; and his first wife, Annette “Shotsy” Gabrick.

A Celebration of Life Service with Military Honors will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 13th at Chapman United Methodist Church with Pastor Connie Wooldridge officiating, followed by burial in Chapman Cemetery. Barbara A. Rawlings, 81, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, January 25, 2023. Cremation will take place. A visitation will take place on Friday, June 2, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Johnson Funeral Home. 

A funeral mass will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 3, 2023, at St. Xavier Catholic Church. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, 218 N Washington St, Junction City, KS 66441 or to a cause of your choice in Barbara's memory. She was born on May 31, 1941, in Nevada, Missouri, to Gay D. and Anne G. (Childers) Barton. Barbara worked as a civil servant on Fort Riley for 30 years as a contracting specialist. She was an active member in the community. She volunteered at Geary Community Hospital frequently after retirement and was a member of the PEO sisterhood. Barbara was also a member of the gardening club, pilots club, and bridge club. She married Bill Hall in 1961. Their union brought two children, Carrie and Lorrie. In 1985, she married Milton Rawlings, they were married almost 40 years. Barbara was a dedicated wife, mother, grandma, and friend. She loved being around her family and friends, truly enjoyed life to the fullest. Barbara is survived by her three daughters, Carrie Hall (John) VanAntwerp of Wichita, Kansas, Lorrie Hall Valentich of Dallas, Texas, Regina (Mike) Oxford of Lawrence, Kansas; six grandchildren, Cassandra (Jason) Childs of Park City, Kansas, Melissa VanAntwerp of Wichita, Kansas, Amanda Valentich of Dallas, Texas, Levi (Amanda) Oxford of Oak Creek, Wisconsin, Sandina Oxford of Lawrence, Kansas, Michela (Jesse) Pacheco of Overbrook, Kansas; seven great grandchildren; one brother, David (Marilyn) Barton of San Antonio, Texas; and nephew, Nathan (Shannon) Barton of New York. She was preceded in death by her parents and her loving spouse, Milton.&nbsp;&nbsp;

CSM (RET) George S. Bowman, Jr., age 76, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on Monday, March 20, 2023 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka, Kansas. Cremation has taken place. 

A graveside service with full military honors will take place Friday, June 2, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Kansas Veteran's Cemetery with Will Ravenstein officiating. 

Memorial contributions are suggested to go to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital located at 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, Tennessee 38105 or to the Shriners Hospitals for Children located at 4400 Clayton Ave., St. Louis, Missouri 63110. George served in the United States Army until retirement. After retiring from the service he went on to join the Barton County Community Troop School on Fort Riley, where he taught for several years. He enjoyed riding his motorcycle, hunting, and fishing. George had many interests and was apart of several organizations to include: The American Legion Post #45, The Fraternal Order of Eagles, and The Junction City Elks Lodge #1037. On September 28, 1996 he went on to marry the love of his life, Elsie J. "Ellie" Hite; George and Ellie married in Junction City where they remained. Survivors include his loving wife Ellie of Junction City, Kansas; two brothers, Keith (Noel) Bowman of Hutchinson, Kansas, and Sam (Jeanette) Ebey of Virginia; one sister, Robin (Todd) Burkhead of Maryland, and many nieces and nephews. John Raymond Young, age 86, of Manhattan, KS, died peacefully with family on April 23, 2023, at Foundation Park at Colbert Hills in Manhattan.

He was born February 10, 1937, in Kansas City, Missouri, the son of Floyd and Goldie Lucille (Shupe) Young.

John grew up in Junction City, graduating from Junction City High School in 1955, where he was a basketball and track standout. He was commended for his best game against school rival Manhattan High School when he tallied 37 points. He spent his freshman year of college at Kansas State University where he was on the basketball team, coached by Tex Winter. John then spent two years at Kansas State Teachers College at Emporia, Kansas and later completed his B.S. in Liberal Studies from the State University of New York, Albany.

On July 2, 1960, in Junction City, he married his high school sweetheart Bethene “Betsy” Burnham. John and Betsy moved to Manhattan in 1964, with their growing family. In their nearly 60 years together in Manhattan, they raised their children, built their careers, made many lifelong friends and established deep roots in the community.

John and Betsy celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends on July 2, 2020. Betsy preceded him in death on June 23, 2021.

John was a land surveyor and Vice President of Schwab-Eaton, a consulting engineering firm, in Manhattan, from 1963 until his retirement in 2003, but continued to work for several more years as a consultant. He made lasting friendships during his forty years at Schwab-Eaton. He was a licensed Professional Land Surveyor in four states and was the director of land development at the firm. He was responsible for all survey work, including the management of numerous survey fieldcrews. His work included all manner of surveys, relating to large construction projects, Corp of Engineers lake boundaries, subdivision design, municipal utility plans, and many other land survey and mapping projects.

John joined the Kansas Army National Guard in 1959, graduated from Officer Candidate School in 1962 and retired at the rank of Colonel in 1988. John began his command experience as a Platoon Leader in the 891st Engineering Battalion before becoming Battalion Commander of the 226th Engineering Battalion. He later served in various positions in the HQ STARC, including Commander of Troop Command. He was awarded numerous military awards including the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and Army Reserve Achievement Medal.

John was an active member of the First United Methodist Church and participated in Old Geezers, Sunday School and served as an usher. John was involved in many professional organizations, including serving as President of the Manhattan Area Builders Association, the Kansas Building Industry Association, member of Kansas Builders Work Comp Fund and Manhattan Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, as well as a National Director of the National Association of Home Builders. He also served as Treasurer of the Riley County Rural Water District.

As much as John accomplished in his career, his most proud accomplishments may have been his four children. He was always a part of their lives and led each of them to great heights. Later he brought that same enthusiasm to his grandchildren, traveling to their events and graduations all across the country.

He loved to travel with Betsy, as well as family and friends; John was always game — traveling across the globe as well closer to home. John was an avid KSU and Kansas City sports fan, enjoyed cooking and gardening, and was a jazz music enthusiast.

He was preceded in death by his three siblings: Betty DeArmand, Pat Young and Cyrus Young.

Survivors include his four children: Stephanie Young and her husband James Rouhandeh of New York, NY, John B. Young and his wife Chanette of Parkville, MO, Thomas C. Young and his wife Kerry of Riley, KS, and Gregory S. Young of Wichita, KS; and nine grandchildren: Katherine Rouhandeh, Audrey Rouhandeh, Charlie Rouhandeh, Jake Young, Molly Young, Caroline Young, Jack Young, Miriam Young and Greta Young.

A Celebration of John’s life will be held at 1:30 P.M. Friday, May 19th, at the First United Methodist Church, 612 Poyntz Avenue, Manhattan, with Pastor Melanie Nord officiating. Inurnment with military honors will follow at the Kansas Veteran’s Cemetery at Fort Riley, immediately followed by a reception at Meadowlark Hills, 2121 Meadowlark Rd. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 6:30 P.M. Thursday, May 18th, at the Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home.

John R. Young

Elizabeth Schmitt (Clennan) Talbott, age 81, of Chapman, passed away May 5, 2023 surrounded by family, at Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Manhattan.

She was born November 14, 1941, in Chapman, KS, the daughter of Vincent and Marie (Kelley) Clennan.

Beth graduated from Chapman High School in 1959.

She worked as a Nurse Aide, Surgical Technician, Manager of the Chapman Senior Center and as pharmacy staff at Kolling Pharmacy. For many years, she was at Eisenhower Center and gave tours. She also spent time working at Blue Ridge Elementary School and at Chapman Elementary School.

Beth was associated with Hospice of Dickinson County for 44 years and held the positions of Volunteer Coordinator and served on the Advisory Board. She loved caring for and investing herself to help others. In 1984 she was named Hospice Volunteer of the Year.

She had also served on the board of directors for Area Agency on Aging, Chapman Community Foundation and the Irish Foundation. She was a member of the Kiwanis Club in Abilene and had served as president and was an Ombudsman for the State of Kansas. She most recently was a volunteer at Stormont Vail Health Flint Hills Hospital.

On February 10, 1988, she was married to Robert Talbott. Robert preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by six siblings: Patricia, Joseph, Mary Lee, John, Margaret and her twin, Barbara.

Survivors include her three children: David Schmitt of Ormond Beach, FL, Amy Smith of Kansas City, MO and Christal Ade of Chapman, KS; five siblings: Catherine Davidson, James, Larry and Leo Clennan and Joyce Snodgrass; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on June 9 at St. Michael Catholic Church in Chapman with Father Peter O’Donnell officiating. Family and friends are invited to pray the Rosary at 10:30 AM prior to the service. Private inurnment will be St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 5:30-6:30 PM at the St. Michael Parish Center on Thursday, June 8.
