Olivia P. Collins died Tuesday, December 13, 2022, at the age of 76 in her home of Meadowlark Hills, Manhattan, Kansas.

Olivia
 was born on October 23, 1946, in Weatherford, Texas to Georgie Layne 
Potter and Wilson Potter, who preceded Olivia in death in 2007 and 1997,
 as did the love of her life, Tony Jurich, in 2010.

Olivia
 graduated with honors from University of Texas at Austin with a 
bachelor’s degree in journalism and was awarded her master's degree in 
human development and the family from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln
 and her Ph.D. in family life education from Kansas State University.

Her
 journalism degree was always important to Olivia. It was her first 
career and helped her express herself, connecting Olivia with the arts 
and nonprofit organizations whose causes she supported throughout her 
life. As her love for adolescents and young adults grew, she pursued 
advanced degrees where her true essence of teacher and mentor shone 
through, landing her in places and spaces she enriched with her open 
heart, critical mind, and remarkable ability to form meaningful 
connections.

Following her doctoral studies, Olivia remained at 
K-State serving in 4-H Youth Programs, UFM Community Learning Center, 
School of Family Studies and Human Services, College of Human Ecology 
Dean’s Office, and retiring from the Staley School of Leadership in 
2010, where she served as assistant professor and director of the 
nonprofit leadership focus, a program she co-founded.

Olivia
 was recognized throughout her career for outstanding contributions to 
education and developing youth, and for her community leadership. She 
was named Leader of the Year from Kansas Association of Family and 
Consumer Sciences in 1995 and recognized also by the National Council on
 Family Relations. Olivia received the university’s “Putting Students 
First” Award and was celebrated by her Staley School students and 
colleagues with the Rost Outstanding Faculty/Staff Award and the Susan 
M. Scott Community Leadership Award. In 2014, Olivia received the 
Wildcat Pride Award for her advocacy of alumni relations from the 
K-State Alumni Association.

Olivia had an authentic way
 of accepting – and applauding – everyone for their unique gifts and 
talents. She paired this genuine and complete acceptance with an ability
 to raise expectations and challenge those she connected with to give 
and do their very best, making her the wisest and gentlest of mentors. 
When she retired, she so missed talking with students – although so many
 would keep in touch long after graduation, with notes, texts, and over 
coffee on visits back to town – that she would talk with everyone else, 
including former neighbors and colleagues, her favorite servers and 
bartenders, friends from long ago or just met – always happy to offer 
friendly advice and gentle nudges to any in need. Olivia was also quick 
to celebrate others, sending cards, gifts, plants and flowers to 
congratulate, console, or encourage. She would generously host a party, 
send drinks to someone’s table or pick up the tab for their meal – just 
because and with delight; “Isn’t this fun!”

Olivia was 
an only child and spoke fondly of her “four-square upbringing,” running 
away only once – hiding in the bushes, struggling with who she wanted to
 be. Not so long ago she laughed that she was still in the bushes 
figuring out who she is. We know Olivia as an intelligent, caring woman 
who built family throughout her life. She was an extraordinary partner 
to Tony Jurich, married for 23 years, and loving member of the Jurich 
clan, including those she is survived by: bother-in-law Peter Jurich; 
brother-in-law Steve Jurich and his wife Madeline and their children 
Matt, Maggie, and Jake, who has welcomed Olivia’s kitty companion Bella 
into his home; and niece and nephew Fran and Peter Babrow.

There
 are many organizations to which memorial contributions may be made that
 would pay tribute to Olivia, including funds she herself initiated: Amy
 Button Renz Nonprofit Leadership Fund, Tony Jurich Community Commitment
 and Leadership Award, and Tony Jurich Marriage and Family Therapy

 Olivia’s expressed wishes, there is no funeral service. Rather, we will
 celebrate her life, as she celebrated her friends and loved ones – with
 coffee and connection, a raised glass, music and dancing – on Sunday, 
April 2, 4:00 – 8:00 PM, and the K-State Alumni Center, 1720 Anderson 
Avenue, Manhattan, Kansas. All are invited.

Irma Jean Plus, 52, of Junction City, Kansas passed away on Monday, February 20, 2023 at her home in Junction City, Kansas. Cremation has taken place. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. Irma was born October 16, 1970, in Beverly, Ohio the daughter of Dennis E. and Rita J. (Brundige) Mayden. Irma graduated from Junction City High School with the class of 1990. She enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren. Irma enjoyed spending time with the Eagle Rider's. She was a breast cancer survivor and devoted a lot of time supporting others with the same challenge. On July 6, 2004, she married Keven Plus. Survivors include her husband Keven of Junction City, Kansas; three daughters, Noel Williams of Junction City, Kansas, Lisa Roberson of Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri and Michelle Daniels of Junction City, Kansas; her mother, Rita J. Mayden of Junction City, Kansas; two sisters, Misty Mayden-Miles of Lee's Summit, Missouri and Jennifer Lucero of Junction City, Kansas; five grandchildren, Demajae' Williams, TaLeigha Roberson, TeAndre Roberson, GraceLynn Daniels, Phoenix Johnson. She was preceded in death by her father Dennis E. Mayden and one granddaughter, Shanyia Stinger.

Larry L. Riffel, 85, of Champaign, IL, died on Monday, February 6, 
2023.&nbsp; Larry was born on March 30, 1937, in Dickinson County, KS.&nbsp; He 
grew up on a farm outside of Woodbine, KS, and attended Woodbine High 
School and Brown Mackie College.&nbsp; He then embarked on a 40+ year career 
of farming and service at Fort Riley as an environmental specialist and 
auctioneer with the DRMO program.&nbsp; In 1999, he moved with his wife to 
Junction City, KS where he began his second career as a real estate 
agent, and held several area leadership positions. &nbsp;

Flying his Piper with local pilot clubs, woodworking, watching area 
college and professional athletic teams, traveling, spending time at the
 Kansas City Plaza, and participating in the community as a 4-H leader 
are just a few of the many things Larry enjoyed doing most.&nbsp; He was also
 an elder at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Herington, KS.&nbsp;

Surviving is his loving wife of 55 years, Mary Jane Riffel of 
Champaign, IL; sons, Timothy Riffel of Arizona and Greg Riffel of Texas;
 sisters, Shari Coup &nbsp;and Kathy (Howard) Ludden both of Arizona; and his
 beloved cat Marley girl. &nbsp;

Preceding Larry in death are his parents, Sylvester and Irene Riffel; and a brother-in-law, Curtis Coup.&nbsp;

A Gathering of Family and Friends and Celebration of Life was on Saturday, 
February 18, 2023, at St. John Lutheran Church, 509 S. Mattis Ave, 
Champaign, IL 61821.&nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp;

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sarah, a 
beloved daughter, sister, mother, and friend. Sarah was born on March 
4th, 1986, in Emporia, Kansas, and she passed away unexpectedly on 
February 15th a t the age of 36. 
Sarah had a rich and complex life, full of love and laughter, but also 
of challenges and struggles. She was married to JW for 14 years, and 
together they had three children: Jake, Emily and Alice. Sarah was a 
devoted mother who always put her children first, and she loved spending
 time with them, watching them grow and supporting them in their 
passions and dreams. Sarah also had another daughter, Hailey, from a 
previous marriage to Brandon Long, who survived her. 
Sarah’s father, Stephen, and her sister, Celeste, will deeply miss her 
presence and her bright spirit. Sadly, Sarah was preceded in death by 
her mother, Elizabeth, who passed away some years ago. 
Sarah was a Paraprofessional for USD 437, where she dedicated herself to
 supporting and helping children with their education. She was kind and
 patient person who had a gift for connecting with children and her 
colleagues and students alike admired and respected her for her hard 
work and dedication. 
In her free time, Sarah loved attending concerts and listening to music,
 playing video games, and spending time with her beloved cats. She had a
 special talent for finding joy in the small things in life and 
spreading that joy to those around her. 
Sarah’s sudden passing has left a deep void in the hearts of her family 
and friends, who will always remember her loving and generous spirit, 
her contagious laughter, and her unwavering strength and resilience. 
She will be greatly missed and forever remembered.

Ronald B. Haynes, 75, of Junction City, Kansas, passed away on Friday, 
February 17, 2023. A graveside service with military honors will take 
place on Friday, February 24, 2023, at 1:00 p.m., at Kansas Veterans' 
Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Knights Templar Eye 
Foundation, 3201 Cross Timbers Road, Bldg 4, Ste 300, Flower Mound, TX 
75028. He was born on August 10, 1947, in Chanute, Kansas, to 
Byrle and Ruth (Patton) Haynes. Ronald spent his whole childhood in 
Chanute, Kansas, and graduated from Chanute High School in 1966. On 
January 16, 1967, he and his twin brother, Donald, joined the United 
States Navy. Together, they served aboard the USS Oriskany aircraft 
working the integrated weapons system during the Vietnam conflict. After
 being discharged from the Navy, he moved to Santa Maria, California. 
Ronald started his own electrical business called "R and D Electrical", 
worked at Mighty Motors, then as a mechanic at Ted R. Smith Aerostar. 
Santa Maria is where he met the love of his life, Donna Squires. They 
got married in 1975 and moved to Junction City, Kansas, where they made 
their home. After moving to Junction City, he continued his electrical 
business “R and D Electrical” later renamed “Lamplighter Electric”. Over
 the years, Ronald worked for the Foundry, Whitaker Cable, and Woolworth
 Distribution Center. He installed many electronic gates and alarm 
systems for Tri City Fence and Kansas Fence. Ronald also did electrical 
work for IHOP restaurants. Ronald began his Civil Service career on Fort
 Riley in 1979. He started as an electrician and worked his way into the
 Electrical Engineering Department. Ronald retired from his career in 
2001, after 22 years of service. Ronald and his wife, Donna, were
 members of the Santa Maria Saddleites Motorcycle Club when they lived 
in California. Ronald served as a Deputy Reserve Officer with the Geary 
County Sheriff's Department for 25 years. He and his wife were also 
apart of the Geary County Sheriff's Mounted Posse until it disbanded. 
Ronald was a lifetime member of the VFW, having recieved the "Quilt of 
Valor" on September 15, 2019. In his free time, he loved 
watching John Wayne movies and hanging out at Stacy's or IHOP drinking 
coffee. Anybody that knew Ron, knows that he had a story for everyone 
and every occasion. His stories will be greatly missed by his friends 
and family. Ronald is survived by his wife of 47 years, 
Donna; step daughter, Christy (Bobby) Svedeen; step grandson, Michael 
(Francis) McKeague; step great-granchildren, Elizabeth, Emily, and 
Richard; twin brother, Donald "Don" (Helen) Haynes; sister, Emma 
(Vernon) Manion; brother-in-law, Jay (Roseanna) Squires; many treasured 
nieces and nephews; and his "fur babies," Molly, Binkee, and Tabasco. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Lois, Margaret, and Carol.&nbsp;&nbsp;

 the years, Ronald worked for the Foundry, Whitaker Cable, and Woolworth
 Distribution Center. He installed many electronic gates and alarm 
systems for Tri City Fence and Kansas Fence. Ronald also did electrical 
work for IHOP restaurants. Ronald began his Civil Service career on Fort
 Riley in 1979. He started as an electrician and worked his way into the
 Electrical Engineering Department. Ronald retired from his career in 
2001, after 22 years of service. Ronald and his wife, Donna, were
 members of the Santa Maria Saddleites Motorcycle Club when they lived 
in California. Ronald served as a Deputy Reserve Officer with the Geary 
County Sheriff's Department for 25 years. He and his wife were also 
apart of the Geary County Sheriff's Mounted Posse until it disbanded. 
Ronald was a lifetime member of the VFW, having recieved the "Quilt of 
Valor" on September 15, 2019. In his free time, he loved 
watching John Wayne movies and hanging out at Stacy's or IHOP drinking 
coffee. Anybody that knew Ron, knows that he had a story for everyone 
and every occasion. His stories will be greatly missed by his friends 
and family. Ronald is survived by his wife of 47 years, 
Donna; step daughter, Christy (Bobby) Svedeen; step grandson, Michael 
(Francis) McKeague; step great-granchildren, Elizabeth, Emily, and 
Richard; twin brother, Donald "Don" (Helen) Haynes; sister, Emma 
(Vernon) Manion; brother-in-law, Jay (Roseanna) Squires; many treasured 
nieces and nephews; and his "fur babies," Molly, Binkee, and Tabasco. He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Lois, Margaret, and Carol.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Cheryl Brooks, age 70, Grand Forks, ND, passed away at her home on 
Friday, February 17, 2023, after a courageous battle with multiple 
medical issues.

Cheryl was born October 8, 1952, to Howard and Pauline (McDonald) 
Brooks in Champaign, Illinois.&nbsp; She was the oldest of six children, 
growing up on the family farm/ranch by Rhame, ND.&nbsp; Cheryl loved her 
horses, working cattle, and raising her 4-H steers.&nbsp; She graduated from 
Rhame High School as Valedictorian of the class of 1970, setting the bar
 for her siblings.&nbsp; Cheryl attended NDSU in Fargo, ND receiving a B.S. 
in Bacteriology in 1974.&nbsp; While at NDSU she joined the Kappa Delta 
sorority, serving as an active member and alumni throughout her life.

Cheryl worked at a cancer research lab at Kansas State, Manhattan, 
Kansas, for several years until health issues caused her to choose a new
 career path.&nbsp; She went back to NDSU and got an M. S. in Counseling in 
1982.&nbsp; in 1984 Cheryl moved to Grand Forks and worked for the ND Office 
of Vocational Rehabilitation.&nbsp; She later joined UND Disabled Student 
Services, working with students to determine accommodations to help them
 be successful at UND.&nbsp; Cheryl loved helping the students and made many 
good friends at UND during her years there.&nbsp;&nbsp; After she retired, she 
especially enjoyed being able to start her day at 11 am.

Cheryl was a much beloved daughter, sister, and favorite aunt.&nbsp; 
Family was very important to her, and she made a point of being there 
for family events even when they were far away.&nbsp; Cheryl enjoyed life, 
excelled in making friends, and keeping up with them throughout the 
years.&nbsp; She was a very intelligent, witty, empathetic and caring person,
 always willing to listen and share the wisdom she’d gained through her 
life experiences.&nbsp; Cheryl loved getting together with friends to enjoy a
 glass of wine, good food and lots of laughter.&nbsp;

Cheryl was always a strong and independent person, who loved her 
little house, yard and patio.&nbsp; Cheryl and her family were very grateful 
for her friend, Marie Neuman, who chose to live with and take care of 
Cheryl as her health deteriorated over the last few years.&nbsp; Marie’s care
 allowed Cheryl to remain living in the home she loved so much.

Cheryl is survived by her mother, Pauline Brooks; her sister Tracy 
(Dave Lunn) Kralicek, her brother Rob (Holly) Brooks, sister-in-law 
Kathy (Steve) Rauscher,&nbsp; and sister-in-law Kristi Brooks; nieces Karin 
(Ty Nietupski) Kralicek,&nbsp; Kelly Kralicek, Dana (David) Cortade, Larissa&nbsp;
 (Jaron Reisenauer) Brooks, Kaitlin Brooks, and Jordan Brooks; and 
nephews Hank (Paige) Brooks, Ben (Paola) Brooks, Josh (Alina) Brooks, 
and Isaac Brooks.

She was preceded in death by her father, Howard Brooks, sister Dianne
 Brooks, brothers Jim Brooks and Lee Brooks, and brother-in-law Lee 
Kralicek.

Gloria E. Boetel, 83, of Valparaiso, Ind., passed away Monday, 
February 20, 2023.&nbsp; She was born May 17, 1939, in Pierce, Nebraska, to the
 late Gerhard and Dolores (Strelow) Kolterman.&nbsp; 

Gloria graduated from 
Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska and later finished with a
 Master’s from Valparaiso University in early childhood development.&nbsp; 

She was committed to Christ through teaching young children, Gloria 
taught for a year at Immanuel School in Grand Forks, ND, 3 years at 
Immanuel School in Junction City, KS, and 25 years at Immanuel Lutheran 
School in Valparaiso, where she started their kindergarten program.&nbsp; An 
active member at Immanuel Lutheran Church, she served in the choir and 
the Altar Guild.&nbsp; Gloria also enjoyed meeting with her friends at their 
weekly small group Bible study. 
On August 12, 1962, in Pierce, NE, Gloria married Robert Carl Boetel who 
preceded her in death in 2020.&nbsp; She is survived by her children, Brian 
(Eileen) Boetel, Yvette (Todd) Leffew, and Megan (William) Pendleton; 
grandchildren, Drew and Bret Boetel, Rashele, Schery, Bryce, and Trey 
Leffew, and Shea, and Parker Pendelton; and brothers, Paul (Trish), Don 
(Jane), and Harley (Karen) Kolterman.

Ellis Eugene Ponton Sr., a longtime resident of Portage, Indiana, passed
 away on February 16, 2023, after a brief illness. He is survived by his 
son, Ellis E Ponton Jr (wife Sandra Cate Ponton), three grandchildren, 
and two great grandchildren as well as two sisters, (Virginia and 
Sylvia). He is preceded in death by his wife of 64 years Euella Ponton, 3
 brothers (Gerald, Leo, Jerry) and 1 sister (Lillian). Ellis was a large man and lived a large, full life. 
 Born in Junction City, Kansas, on March 14, 1934, he served in the Kansas
 National Guard and then the US Air Force. After an honorable discharge 
he moved to Northwest Indiana in the late 1950s, married Euella 
McGlothen on November 17, 1957, and worked at Inland Steel until he 
retired as a Mechanical Rigger Foreman at 54 years young. Ellis was
 very active in the community as a Mason, member of the Deep River 
Archery club, Portage Port Authority Commissioner, and most recently a 
member of the Winamac Old Auto Club with his cherished 1978 Monte Carlo.
 He loved hunting, fishing, story telling, and being the supreme 
prankster. Ellis was a beloved grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, great uncle, and friend to many. 
 Funeral Service for Ellis will be at 6pm on Saturday, February 25, 2023,&nbsp; at Edmonds &amp; Evans Funeral Home Portage Chapel, 6941 Central Ave.,

Helene Osif, 87, of McFarland, Kansas, formerly of Colorado, passed away on Monday, February 20, 2023, at her home.

Born July 15, 1935, in Los Angeles, California, Helene was the 
daughter of Clement Aloysius “Gabe” and Elsie June (Huntley) Gabriel.&nbsp; 
She married Robert Edward Osif on January 7, 1956, in Glendale, 
California.&nbsp; He preceded her in death on April 2, 2011.

Devout in her Catholic Faith, Helene earned a certificate in 
Comprehensive Biblical Studies from the Catholic Biblical School at St. 
John Vianney Theological Seminary.

Survivors include four children, Kevin Osif (Cindy) of Castle 
Rock, CO, Jeffrey Osif (Julie) of McFarland, KS, Patrick Osif (Sheri) of
 West Pueblo, CO and Debra Osif of McFarland, KS; eight grandchildren; 
and six great grandchildren.

Helene was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, 
Robert Michael Osif; a brother, William Gabriel; and a sister, Elizabeth
 Crumley.

Cremation arrangements are in the care of the Campanella &amp; Stewart Funeral Home in Wamego.

Private services and inurnment will be in the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.

Helene Louise Osif

Beth
 Adelaide Froning was born November 19, 1922, to Henry and Edna Froning 
and two loving brothers, Donald and Bobby, in Bushton, Kansas, where her
 father was school superintendent, teacher and basketball coach. In her 
early summers Beth’s family would relocate northwest of Lorraine, 
Kansas, so her father could farm the “Ploog Farm” while Beth and her 
brothers could romp outside.

Beth so loved her brothers. In fact, 
“Bobby” was one of her first words. As she grew older, Donald and Bobby 
were “dear hearts” to Beth. Often she would tell them “I love you whole 
bushels,” and “You boys cut that out!”.

Beth was blessed to be raised in a home 
with a strong Christian heritage and loving family. Her grandfather and 
great grandfather were German Baptist ministers, so it seemed natural 
for Beth and her brothers to have a desire to grow spiritually and have a
 community of service and friendship within their local church, First 
Baptist Church of Lorraine, Kansas. After making her profession of 
faith, Beth was baptized March 27, 1932.

Since both of Beth’s grandparents 
settled in the Lorraine area, church life also included extended family 
time with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Grandmother Froning 
served Sunday dinner immediately following church. Often her brother 
Bobby would dash to her home immediately after the benediction to sneak a
 piece of candy.

In 1927, Beth’s family packed their 
belongings and moved to the farmland her father purchased near Geneseo, 
Kansas. Little did Beth anticipate this home would become her life home 
until retirement. She and her brothers loved having adventures around 
the farm and running in the ditch beside the highway to play with 
neighbor children. Playing with dolls and pretend cooking probably was 
Beth’s initial internship developing her homemaking skill set.

Beth’s father would often pick up 
neighbor children on the way to Victory Country School, a one-room 
school a couple miles from the farm. A winter treat was going to school 
by horse and buggy in the ditch with a buffalo blanket for warmth. With 
education important to her parents, Beth and her brothers focused on 
their studies; however, they also focused on having fun with friends.

The Great Depression brought challenges 
to many, and Beth’s family was no different. They worked to make the 
best of the situation and felt fortunate to have chickens and cows as a 
food source. However, that food source was in jeopardy due to hobos who 
were traveling along the train tracks behind the pasture would camp in 
the pasture. Beth’s father allowed them to milk cows and take eggs to 
reduce any desire of destruction. Their guess why they frequently had 
hobos was rail tracks were marked to indicate a “friendly” property 
owner.

1932 brought a fun trip to the World’s 
Fair in Chicago which was a highlight of Beth’s travel memories. Aunt 
Margaret Froning drove to the farm from Chicago for a quick turnaround 
to pick up Beth’s family so they could experience the fair. It evidently
 was an amazing time viewing all the exhibits as any frustrations having
 six people jammed into the car for a long drive during summer months 
were never shared.

Beth always enjoyed being with groups of
 friends and active in various organizations during her school years . 
One was being a member (and later president) of Victors 4-H Club which 
further prepared Beth for role of being an excellent homemaker by 
developing her cooking and sewing skills. She learned baking peanut 
butter cookies ahead and freezing them until the fair resulted in 
enhanced flavor. She also learned it was disappointing to send her 
prize-winning finely tailored wool dress that she had spent hours to 
create to a national exposition for judging when her brother Bob 
actually was able to attend when competing in the Best Groomed Boy 
Contest. All he had to do was wear a nice suit.

During this time, life on the farm 
changed somewhat when Beth’s father switched professions from educator 
to insurance agent (in addition to farming) and adjusting to Brother 
Donald’s passing at age 16 from scarlet fever. It proved to be a time of
 the family pulling together, and Beth and Bob establishing an even 
closer friendship which lasted through the years.

After high school graduation in 1940, 
Beth was off to her parents’ alma mater, Ottawa University, to study 
home economics. Her brother Bob was also currently enrolled there. 
Photos are proof Beth had no lack of friends with living at The Cottage.

After two years, she asked her parents’ 
permission to transfer to KSAC (Kansas State Agricultural College -- now
 Kansas State University). She used the tactic Ottawa’s College of Home 
Economics was basically non-existent due to the war and KSAC had a great
 program. Beth later shared the real reason was being enchanted with 
increased “night life” in Manhattan. Beth and Alice Shin, a best friend 
at Ottawa, wanted to be roommates at KSAC. Alice’s parents’ response was
 to the effect of if the Fronings approved Beth transferring, it was 
good enough for them. So that fall Beth and Alice were off to Manhattan 
with matching bedspreads, curtains and such in hand to room together in 
Van Zile Hall.

One night when Beth was at the Baptist 
Student Center, she met Richard Johnson. She once again caught his eye 
as she had at a high school youth rally. Harold Dobrinski, his roommate,
 let Richard borrow his car to take Beth home. This first date in 
October 1942 was the beginning of "love at first sight" for both Richard
 and Beth and a "match made in heaven."

When Richard sensed he would soon be 
called to active duty in World War II, he went home to tell his parents 
good-bye and then returned to Manhattan for a special weekend with Beth.
 Those plans changed quickly when his roommate gave him a letter stating
 he was to report to Fort Leavenworth the next day for active duty in 
the Army Air Corps. That special weekend turned out to be Beth by his 
side on the train to Fort Leavenworth.

Richard's military training included 
studies at the University of Chicago. It was not surprising that Beth 
found her way to Chicago as often as she could before Richard received 
remote assignments.

On August 23, 1944, Richard asked the 
“big question” – and the only acceptable response to a handsome officer 
was “Yes!” Richard claimed Beth’s ring came out of a Cracker Box; 
however, claim was never validated.

 yesterday's letter." Fortunately, the war ended just prior to Richard 
reporting to an island just off the Japanese coastline. He was coming 
home!

On July 6, 1946, 1st Lt. Richard Johnson
 was honorably discharged, and he and Beth started planning for their 
wedding on August 13, 1946. After their wedding, Beth's parents moved to
 town and Richard took over managing the Froning farm. Their theme song 
could have been "Side by Side". Life was humble and meager as they 
established their home. On August 12, 1947 — just one day shy of their 
first anniversary — they welcomed David Eugene into their lives. Later in
 1950, Rosellen Adele came into the family and in 1958, Mary Elizabeth. 
Later as their children married, they welcomed the joy of children, 
grandchildren and great grandchildren in their home as often as they 
could have them.

Becoming empty nesters gave Richard and 
Beth opportunity to escape Kansas winters in Tucson where they continued
 to made new friendships where they lived and where they worshipped just
 as they did when living on the farm.

This same scenario took place when they 
retired from the farm to Hutchinson in 2000 and later to Leawood in 
2008. Looking back, there were years of plenty as well as years of 
tightening their belts. However, one factor remained constant: Both 
Richard and Beth were committed to their faith and to each other until 
Richard’s passing on March 2, 2016.

Beth never wavered through the years 
with her joyful spirit as she lovingly cared for her family as well as 
others unconditionally. She is long remembered with her big smiles and 
amazing gift of hospitality. Children brought her such joy. She served 
endlessly in her church and community as she showed her faith through 
her actions.

Beth’s godly love was still alive as she
 approached her last days. One night after devotions, she was concerned 
she could no longer witness. She gave a big smile when being reminded 
her smile and pleasant demeanor was a significant witness to those who 
cared for her. That’s Beth!

Beth was proceeded in her death by her 
husband, Richard Johnson. She is survived by three children, David 
Johnson (Peggy), Adele Hillner and Mary White (Grant); grandchildren 
Laurie Johnson, Cheryl Kamp (Greg), Brian Hillner (Jennifer), Eric 
Hillner (Jessica), Ryan White (Mary Celeste), Andrew White (Jodee) and 
Kaitlyn David (Sam) and 13 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be held at 2pm followed 
by service at 2:30pm on March 4 at the Wesley Chapel at Church of the 
Resurrection, Leawood, KS. Livestream link will be posted when

 Adelaide Froning was born November 19, 1922, to Henry and Edna Froning 
and two loving brothers, Donald and Bobby, in Bushton, Kansas, where her
 father was school superintendent, teacher and basketball coach. In her 
early summers Beth’s family would relocate northwest of Lorraine, 
Kansas, so her father could farm the “Ploog Farm” while Beth and her 
brothers could romp outside.Beth so loved her brothers. In fact, 
“Bobby” was one of her first words. As she grew older, Donald and Bobby 
were “dear hearts” to Beth. Often she would tell them “I love you whole 
bushels,” and “You boys cut that out!”.Beth was blessed to be raised in a home 
with a strong Christian heritage and loving family. Her grandfather and 
great grandfather were German Baptist ministers, so it seemed natural 
for Beth and her brothers to have a desire to grow spiritually and have a
 community of service and friendship within their local church, First 
Baptist Church of Lorraine, Kansas. After making her profession of 
faith, Beth was baptized March 27, 1932.Since both of Beth’s grandparents 
settled in the Lorraine area, church life also included extended family 
time with grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Grandmother Froning 
served Sunday dinner immediately following church. Often her brother 
Bobby would dash to her home immediately after the benediction to sneak a
 piece of candy.In 1927, Beth’s family packed their 
belongings and moved to the farmland her father purchased near Geneseo, 
Kansas. Little did Beth anticipate this home would become her life home 
until retirement. She and her brothers loved having adventures around 
the farm and running in the ditch beside the highway to play with 
neighbor children. Playing with dolls and pretend cooking probably was 
Beth’s initial internship developing her homemaking skill set.Beth’s father would often pick up 
neighbor children on the way to Victory Country School, a one-room 
school a couple miles from the farm. A winter treat was going to school 
by horse and buggy in the ditch with a buffalo blanket for warmth. With 
education important to her parents, Beth and her brothers focused on 
their studies; however, they also focused on having fun with friends.The Great Depression brought challenges 
to many, and Beth’s family was no different. They worked to make the 
best of the situation and felt fortunate to have chickens and cows as a 
food source. However, that food source was in jeopardy due to hobos who 
were traveling along the train tracks behind the pasture would camp in 
the pasture. Beth’s father allowed them to milk cows and take eggs to 
reduce any desire of destruction. Their guess why they frequently had 
hobos was rail tracks were marked to indicate a “friendly” property 
owner.1932 brought a fun trip to the World’s 
Fair in Chicago which was a highlight of Beth’s travel memories. Aunt 
Margaret Froning drove to the farm from Chicago for a quick turnaround 
to pick up Beth’s family so they could experience the fair. It evidently
 was an amazing time viewing all the exhibits as any frustrations having
 six people jammed into the car for a long drive during summer months 
were never shared.Beth always enjoyed being with groups of
 friends and active in various organizations during her school years . 
One was being a member (and later president) of Victors 4-H Club which 
further prepared Beth for role of being an excellent homemaker by 
developing her cooking and sewing skills. She learned baking peanut 
butter cookies ahead and freezing them until the fair resulted in 
enhanced flavor. She also learned it was disappointing to send her 
prize-winning finely tailored wool dress that she had spent hours to 
create to a national exposition for judging when her brother Bob 
actually was able to attend when competing in the Best Groomed Boy 
Contest. All he had to do was wear a nice suit.During this time, life on the farm 
changed somewhat when Beth’s father switched professions from educator 
to insurance agent (in addition to farming) and adjusting to Brother 
Donald’s passing at age 16 from scarlet fever. It proved to be a time of
 the family pulling together, and Beth and Bob establishing an even 
closer friendship which lasted through the years.After high school graduation in 1940, 
Beth was off to her parents’ alma mater, Ottawa University, to study 
home economics. Her brother Bob was also currently enrolled there. 
Photos are proof Beth had no lack of friends with living at The Cottage.After two years, she asked her parents’ 
permission to transfer to KSAC (Kansas State Agricultural College -- now
 Kansas State University). She used the tactic Ottawa’s College of Home 
Economics was basically non-existent due to the war and KSAC had a great
 program. Beth later shared the real reason was being enchanted with 
increased “night life” in Manhattan. Beth and Alice Shin, a best friend 
at Ottawa, wanted to be roommates at KSAC. Alice’s parents’ response was
 to the effect of if the Fronings approved Beth transferring, it was 
good enough for them. So that fall Beth and Alice were off to Manhattan 
with matching bedspreads, curtains and such in hand to room together in 
Van Zile Hall.One night when Beth was at the Baptist 
Student Center, she met Richard Johnson. She once again caught his eye 
as she had at a high school youth rally. Harold Dobrinski, his roommate,
 let Richard borrow his car to take Beth home. This first date in 
October 1942 was the beginning of "love at first sight" for both Richard
 and Beth and a "match made in heaven."When Richard sensed he would soon be 
called to active duty in World War II, he went home to tell his parents 
good-bye and then returned to Manhattan for a special weekend with Beth.
 Those plans changed quickly when his roommate gave him a letter stating
 he was to report to Fort Leavenworth the next day for active duty in 
the Army Air Corps. That special weekend turned out to be Beth by his 
side on the train to Fort Leavenworth.Richard's military training included 
studies at the University of Chicago. It was not surprising that Beth 
found her way to Chicago as often as she could before Richard received 
remote assignments.On August 23, 1944, Richard asked the 
“big question” – and the only acceptable response to a handsome officer 
was “Yes!” Richard claimed Beth’s ring came out of a Cracker Box;

Beth A. Johnson

Mary Jolene (Jo) Carroll age 85 passed away on February 15, 2023. She was born on July 28, 1937 in Abilene, KS, daughter of Dr. Frank Callahan and Hazel (Parks) Callahan. Jolene was a gentle, kind and prayerful person. She attended Abilene schools, graduating in 1955. She received her Registered Nursing degree in Oakland, CA, followed by her Bachelor of Science degree from Mary Mount college in Salina, KS. She later received a Master’s Degree in Industrial Psychology from George Mason University. She was a Registered Nurse and also taught nursing throughout her life and career. On July 23, 1964 she married Harvey (Clarke) Carroll, an Air Force Officer and Pilot. They began their exciting life together traveling the world with Clarke’s Air Force tours of duty including assignments to Asia, Africa, Europe and throughout the U.S. They spent three years in Chad, Africa attached to the U.S. Embassies in the countries of Chad, Gabon, Cameron, and the Central African Republic. They also worked with the French Foreign Legion in the Sahara Desert. Clarke was the Defense/Air Attache and Jolene was the Embassy Nurse. Some of their U.S. tours of duty included the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. and Patrick Air Force Base in Cocoa Beach, FL. After Clarke retired from the Air Force, they both worked at the Kennedy Space Center; Clarke as an Engineering Manager on the Space Shuttle and Jo as a technical writer on space shuttle manuals. She also taught Nursing at the local Junior College. Jo enjoyed cooking, golfing, painting, travel, and life in general with her husband and family. Her greatest joy in life was her husband and her Catholic faith. Jo and Clarke were very close and celebrated 59 years of marriage. They kept a wonderful bond and closeness with their siblings, always making family a priority, and were also very fond of their many nieces and nephews. They were a role model to all of the family. Helping others and charity giving was always an important aspect of their lives. Their generosity, love and support was endless, respected and appreciated by all. In 1998, after their long Air Force and subsequent Space Center career, Jo and Clarke returned to Jo’s childhood home in Abilene, KS. They quickly became very involved in the Abilene community and spent a lot of time visiting nursing homes, delivering meals on wheels and helping with other community activities. Jo was a member of St. Andrew’s Church, Ladies of St. Andrew’s, and was an Associate of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Concordia. Jolene is survived by her husband Clarke Carroll (Abilene), sister Kitty Lynn (Pleasanton, CA), sister-in-law Evelyn Callahan (Abilene), brothers-in law John (Roger) Carroll, (Canada) and Frank Fuller (Iola, KS), nieces and nephews Jim Mugrage (Chanute, KS), Leanne Courter (Chanute, KS), Janelle (Mike) Bowman (Cherokee, KS), Chris Mugrage (Miami, FL), Theresa (Danny) Callahan-Hern, Frank (Kayo) Lynn, (Pleasanton, CA), Melika Carroll, (Washington D.C), many great nieces and nephews and their children, her long-time friend Carolee Hartenstein (Manhattan, KS), and many friends in Abilene. Jolene 'Jo' Carroll

Marjorie May Chamberlin of Chapman passed away Sunday, February 19, 2023,&nbsp; at the Chapman Valley Manor in Chapman at the age of 84. She was born 
February 6, 1939, at her home near Chapman, the daughter of Wesley and 
Lela (Gloss) Sautter. 
She attended the Winsor one room grade school and graduated from the Dickinson County Community High School. 
Marjorie married John Chamberlin in 1957 and they established their home
 north of Chapman. They had four children Michael, Patricia, Randall, 
and Rodney. 
Marjorie drove a school bus for U.S.D. 473 and was a member of the Alida
 United Methodist Church. She served her church in various ways, being a
 youth leader and Sunday School teacher. Marjorie enjoyed bringing 
laughter to people with her humorous story telling. She attended as 
many of her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids activities as possible 
over the years. 
Marjorie was preceded in death by her husband on September 28, 2021, her
 great grandson Reed Mulanax, and her parents. Marjorie is survived by 
her son, Michael (Janice) Chamberlin of Paxico; Grandchildren: Kimberly
 (Jimmy) Kummer - Evan, Ethan, Jacob: Joshua Chamberlin: Rebecca

Marjorie May Chamberlin

Betty Maxine Spellman, daughter of J. Howard and Anna (Smith) Morley 
was born on a farm in Clay County, Kansas, October 5, 1927, and died at 
her home February 19, 2023, at the age of 95.

Betty and her brother Les were raised and attended grade schools in 
the Oak Hill community and the Oak Hill Presbyterian Church, where their
 mother played the piano and taught Sunday school.

Betty graduated in 1945 from the Clay Center High School.&nbsp; She could 
have gone to high school in Longford but wanted to take some secretarial
 classes not offered there, so opted to attend Clay Center. She (like a 
few others) rented a room with a family while attending classes during 
the week and occasionally was able to go home for the weekend.

After graduation she at first worked for V. R. Vergades Insurance Company and then for attorney Elmer Anderson.&nbsp;

Betty married Dale Edward Spellman Sunday December 14, 1947, at the 
First Presbyterian Church, Clay Center, Kansas before Sunday school.&nbsp; 
The planned wedding date had been set for a few days later, but they 
moved up the nuptials to hopefully squelch any mischievous pranks Dale’s
 friends had in mind, and off to Kansas City for their honeymoon.&nbsp;

At first, they shared a two-story house with two other families.&nbsp; The
 young Spellman couple walked in the front door and up the stairway to 
the second floor where they had two private rooms which consisted of a 
bedroom and a kitchen/dining/living area. They shared a refrigerator in 
the hall, and the door to the bathroom they shared was also in the 
hall.&nbsp;

In March of 1949, they moved to a family farm east of Clay Center 
where they spent the rest of their lives engaged in farming, dairying, 
raising their two children and enjoying their five grandchildren.&nbsp; They 
retired in 1992.

Betty was involved in the community.&nbsp; Serving as a leader in the 
Hayes Boosters 4-H Club, was a member of one of the county Extension 
Homemakers Units, the Hayes United Methodist Church and Hayes United 
Methodist Women, and was a Red Cross Volunteer including writing up the 
news for the Dispatch.&nbsp; After the Hayes Church closed in 2009, she 
transferred her membership to the Clay Center United Methodist Church 
where she became part of the Alla Sera Cluster and the Piloteers Sunday 
School Class.&nbsp;

Betty had many talents and gifts.&nbsp; She enjoyed sewing, rock hunting, 
embroidery, ceramics, macramé, traveling, bus trips, genealogy and 
visiting cemeteries, flower arranging, gardening, bird watching, and 
feeding the birds, squirrels, quail, and the occasional stray cat. Most 
of all, she enjoyed time spent with family and friends.&nbsp;

One of the downfalls of living to the age of 95 is out living many of
 your friends and family members.&nbsp; Another one of her gifts was the 
ability of making new friends.&nbsp;

Betty was preceded in death by her infant daughter Virginia Ann, her 
mother Anna, her husband Dale, her father J. Howard, and her 
bonus-mother Dorothy; her sisters and brothers-in-law Earl, Irene, Bob 
and Irma; and her bonus sisters Betty, Ruth Ann and Janice.

Betty was loved and her life is celebrated by her daughter Linda and 
husband Dallas Cunningham; son Mark and wife Teresa Spellman of Clay 
Center; granddaughters Lindsay and husband Simon Sun of Olathe and Gena 
and husband Chad Abernathy of Raymore, Missouri; grandsons Scot and wife
 Elizabeth Spellman of Wamego; Jason and wife Mandy Spellman, and Cody 
and wife Nicole Spellman of Junction City; great grand-daughters Anna 
and husband Dillon Eyer of Boise, Idaho; Mollie Spellman of Wamego; and 
Addyson and Remington Spellman of Junction City; great-grandsons Logan 
and Luke Sun of Olathe; Benjamin Spellman of Wamego; and Chase and 
Easton Spellman of Junction City; her brother Les and wife Jodie Morley 
of Bartlett, Tennessee; her childhood, “like a sister forever friend” 
Lorene Fengel of Abilene; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, 
neighbors, and friends.

Betty Spellman

Paula Jo Wilson was born December 3, 1953, in Abilene, KS, to the 
late Paul Edward &amp; Pauline Bethel (Kohart) Hazelton.  She died on 
Wednesday, February 15, 2023, at her home in Davis, OK, at the age of 69
 years, 2 months, and 2 days.  Paula and Earl Dean Wilson were married 
on December 16, 1984, in Abilene.  He preceded her in death on September
 18, 2009.

Paula grew up in Abilene.  Following her 1971 
graduation from Abilene High School, she attended Fort Hays State 
University, in Hays, KS.  After college, she spent a few years working 
in hotel management, where her main job was coordinating conventions. 
While working in this field, Paula was fortunate to meet several 
well-known celebrities, professional singers, and musicians.  After 
leaving her position in convention coordinating, she spent five years 
working in hotel software logistics.  This position allowed her to 
travel about, assisting with the opening of new hotels.   After she and 
Earl married, Paula became a full-time mom.  She spent her time caring 
for her children and being active in Cub Scouts, PTA and many other 
interests that her children had.

Paula and her family 
moved to Oklahoma in 1995, where she continued her role as a very active
 mother.  Once the children were older, she attended East Central 
University in Ada, OK, where she earned a Bachelors degree in nursing.  
After graduating from ECU, Paula became employed with Mercy Health in 
Ardmore, OK, where until only a few months prior to her death, she 
worked as a registered nurse in the ICU.

Paula was 
known to be extremely creative. She enjoyed sewing, gardening and 
tutoring children with their reading skills.  Paula was also very active
 with the Pathway Methodist Church, where she served as Sunday School 
Superintendent for several years, as well as taught Sunday School 
classes.  Her desire to serve God, allowed her to witness to others, 
bringing many to know Jesus Christ as their personal savior, just as she
 knew him.

Survivors include her daughter, Rebekah Wilson 
of Davis; three sons, Erik Wilson of Davis, Paul Wilson &amp; wife Regan
 of Stratford, OK, and Neil Wilson &amp; wife Allison of Healy, KS; five
 grandchildren, Genesis, Jericho, Neo, Tyndale and Jay Wilson; three 
sisters, Judy Kohardt-Hazelton &amp; Jamie Davidson of Abilene, and 
Ellen Locke of Newton, KS; and one brother, David Hazelton &amp; wife 
Becky of Hutchinson, KS.

In addition to her parents and husband, Paula was preceded in death by one sister, Linda Riffel.

Funeral
 services will be held at 11:00 AM, on Wednesday, February 22, 2023, at 
the Pathway Methodist Church, in Davis, OK with Pastors Ben Williams and 
Robert Harrison officiating.  Interment will follow at the Green Hill 
Cemetery in Davis.

Serving as pallbearers will be members of the Pathway Men’s Breakfast Group.

Services are entrusted to Hale’s Funeral Home of Davis, OK.

Paula Jo Wilson

August 6, 1928 - February 10, 2023

To call Jack Vanier a founding father of a bygone rural Kansas culture would be three things at once.

An understatement, a compliment, and a chance for Jack to respond in 
his characteristic unassuming nature – accompanied by that brilliant 
smile – that he was just doing what came naturally.&nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

In his self-effacing, low-key way, it would also offer a golden opportunity for Jack to take issue with the “bygone” sentiment.

Soft-spoken and successful.Kind and productive.Reliable and generous.

If someone were to ask, “What does it mean to be called ‘the salt of 
the Earth?” One would only need to spend a few minutes talking about 
Jack Vanier to get a deep and meaningful sense.

Jack grew up on the bedrock of honesty. He came of age with a work 
ethic. Integrity drove his success in business. With his bride, Donna, 
he raised a family on faith. Jack Vanier did not struggle with a greater
 cosmic meaning of why he was here, and that’s what made him such a good
 husband, father and grandfather, rancher and businessman. That’s what 
made him such a good friend.

He loved his neighbor and walked humbly. His sense of humor put you 
at ease as soon as you encountered him. Jack Vanier was fun to be 
around.

Born in Salina, Kansas to John J. (“J.J.”) and Lesta Vanier. Jack 
operated the CK Ranch in Brookville, Kansas, once the largest producer 
of purebred Hereford cattle in the country. The family also held 
ranching interests in Wyoming, Colorado, and Oklahoma.

Jack offered his gift of service and leadership capacity to a host of
 organizations, including the American Hereford Association, the Kansas 
Livestock Association, the Boards of Directors of the National 
Cattlemen’s Association and Archer Daniels Midland. Roles in which he 
provided wisdom and insight, but mostly what he would have described as 
common sense. &nbsp;

And while much has changed in Kansas and the world during Jack 
Vanier’s time on this planet, his passing is not the end of an era. 
Jack’s legacy is with us today. You see it in Mary’s compassion for her 
community, in Marty’s brilliant smile and intellect, in the life lessons
 John learned from his father. In Jack’s grandchildren, you don’t have 
to look very far, to see a direct reflection of his light and love.&nbsp; &nbsp;

You see it in the promise of entire generations touched by Jack’s benevolence through scholarship, mentorship, and stewardship.

Jack lives on, in the thoughts and memories found uppermost in the 
minds and the warm feelings which lie deep in the hearts of all who 
encountered him. When we think of Jack Vanier, it is what comes 
naturally.

His contributions to agriculture, the livestock industry, to Kansas 
State University, and to all the organizations and people he touched, 
are many and significant. But it was by living his life the way he did 
that marks the profound contribution Jack Vanier made to our greater 
society, the rural culture and a way of life worth preserving, that will
 stand out.

Not because he wanted it to, but because he didn’t.

Preceded in death by his wife, Donna Lindsey Vanier, Jack is survived
 by sister Joyce Hale and brother Jerry Vanier of Kansas City, daughter 
Mary Vanier of Manhattan, daughter Dr. Marty Vanier of Manhattan and her
 stepchildren Katie (Kevin) Buehler, Kirsten (Nathan) Beemerand Kathy 
Krause, and son John K. Vanier II of Salina, his daughters Lauren Vanier
 and Sarah (Ryan) Geiger, John’s wife, Kim, and children Pallie(Bryan) 
Swartz, Landon Koehn, Jess Koehn, and Ty Koehn, Jake Mooney and Norah 
Mooney.

A funeral will be held on Friday, March 3, 2023, 1:00 p.m. at Christ 
Cathedral in Salina, Kansas.&nbsp; The family suggests memorial gifts to any

John K. 'Jack' Vanier

Kenneth P. Marstall, age 83, &nbsp;Topeka, Kansas, passed away February 11, 2023, at the Midland Hospice House in Topeka.

He was born December 20, 1939, in Wamego, KS, son of George H. and Nellie M. (Van Hole) Marstall.

Ken graduated from St. Marys High School and lived in Topeka, where 
he was employed for many years with Merchants National Bank and Bell 
Telephone Company before retirement. Ken was a member of Most Pure Heart
 of Mary Catholic Church in Topeka. He was a man of great Christian 
faith having visited Medjugorje twice and the Holy Land.

After retirement, Ken became involved with the Full Gospel Business 
Men’s Fellowship in America, Topeka Chapter, and was a Lifetime Member. 
He was also a member of the Point Man International Ministries of Kansas
 where he served as Treasurer for many years. Ken was a “Prayer Warrior”
 providing spiritual guidance as well as helping many others with their 
spiritual life and in times of need. Ken sang with the Happy Time 
Singers, visiting nursing homes and also serving as their Spiritual 
Leader.

He is survived by his brother, Lawrence E. “Larry” (Anita) Marstall, 
St. Marys, sister in-law, Roberta Marstall, Manhattan, &amp; many nieces
 &amp; nephews. Ken was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, George L., James J., Charles S., and Norman F.

Mass of Christian Burial was Wednesday, 
February 15, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. 
Marys. Inurnment was at Mount Calvary Catholic Cemetery, St. 
Marys.

Kenneth P. Marstall

Nicholas Peter Gicas, 87, passed away the morning of Saturday, February 18, 2023, surrounded by family. He was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI to Lambro and Peter Gicas and is survived by his beloved wife, Lorraine of 51 years, his two sons Theodore and Anthony, his daughters-in-law, Lauren and Debbie, and two grandchildren Leo and Sienna.

A graduate of Marquette University's College of Journalism, Nick worked as a newspaper reporter for several years, first in Indiana with United Press International (UPI) where he reported on the Indy 500 and then for Roll Call in Washington, DC where he covered Congress, interviewing the likes of John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson before they became Presidents.

Prior to his award-winning career, Nick enlisted in the US Army, attending basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO, and ultimately becoming the Public Information Officer at Fort Riley, KS due to his journalism background. Nick would spend the next 30 years in corporate public relations, composing speeches for chairmen and presidents as well as producing annual reports, most prominently for the New York Stock Exchange.

He was a devoted fan of the Green Bay Packers and Milwaukee Bucks in his native Wisconsin. Nick had a love for travel and and took full advantage during his career as a public relations executive for TWA Airlines; flying to numerous destinations spread across six continents, many trips of which he shared with Lorraine, who he first met purchasing a ticket from her at the Pan Am counter where she worked in midtown Manhattan in 1969. Just over a year after that chance encounter, they were married.

An avid film buff and reader, Nick has written a novel and instructed news writing at the New York University School of Continuing Education. He lived in New York City and raised his family in Scotch Plains before moving to Galloway in 2006 where he enjoyed retirement. A first-generation Greek-American, Nick was proud of his heritage and fluent in Greek.

Nick will be remembered for his passion for life, warm smile, sense of humor, a personality to match his height and the love for his family and friends who knew him best.

A celebration of life will be held in Nick's honor at a future date.

Marjorie May Chamberlin (Sautter)

Glen John Rubash, 69, of rural Geary County, Kansas, passed away on 
Thursday, February 16, 2023. Cremation will take place and celebration 
of life will be announced. He was born on November 21, 1953, to Victor and Leala (Kingsley) Rubash of Bethel, Minnesota. Glen
 was a distance runner at Saint Francis High School in Minnesota. He 
joined the United States Army in 1974 as a missile technician and 
armored equipment mechanic. Glen served in combat in Nicaragua and 
completed his enlistment at Fort Riley. He continued to serve in the 
Army Reserve and National Guard until the early 1990s.

After leaving the
 Army, he served his community as a professional firefighter for nearly 
30 years with the Junction City Fire Department, JCFD. Glen was also a 
volunteer with the Geary County Fire Department for more than 30 years 
and continued to serve until his passing. After his retirement from 
JCFD, he was employed at Milford Lake with the Kansas Department of 
Wildlife, before becoming a facilities technician at Kansas State 
University and again, retiring. As a hobby, Glen worked as a machinist 
in the physics department machine shop - completing projects for the 
physics labs, maintenance of facilities and the nuclear reactor. As
 an avid licensed amateur radio operator (KC0GPV), Glen served as an 
operator for the Military Auxiliary Radio System, MARS, as part of a 
national emergency response network and was a member of the Manhattan 
Area Amateur Radio Society. He had a lifelong appreciation of all types 
of music, from Wagner to Pink Floyd, and was known to have his music on 
full blast echoing down the creek. Glen enjoyed dabbling in experimental
 flight. Despite several crashes, beginning with a legendary set of 
mishaps involving his father's gyrocopter, he persisted and finally 
realized his dream of "sustained flight” with a recently acquired 
paraglider. Glen was known to all as a beekeeper, gardener, welder, 
tinkerer, and lover of animals. On November 24, 1978, Glen 
married Lindy Grant. They built a life (and their house) in the Flint 
Hills, along the banks of Humboldt Creek. They welcomed three sons and a
 series of mishaps would follow. Glen is survived by his two 
dogs, Winston (the rescued basset hound) and JoJo (a vet med beagle from
 K-State); his loving wife, Lindy; his three sons, Caleb (Anne) Rubash 
of rural Geary County, Kansas, Jonah (Julie) Rubash of southern 
California, David (Jessica) Rubash of Toronto, Canada; three 
grandchildren, Ivan, Victor, and Astrid; one brother, Lambert Rubash; 
two nephews, Todd Dock and Steven Kummer; five nieces, Tricia Turrittin,
 Susan Boline, Leslie Dock, Elan McMonigal, and Jennifer Flynn-Grant. 
Glen is also survived by his lifelong and best friend AJ (Sandy) Ondrey 
of Bethel, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents and his two sisters, Harriet Dock and Gail Farmer.

Michael Nedzia, 77, of Junction City, passed away on February 17, 2023,
 surrounded by his loving family. A family memorial service is pending. Michael
 was born on December 24, 1945, in Pennsylvania. He graduated high 
school in 1963. After high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Army as a 
private. He married his loving wife, Chong in 1976, in Seoul, 
South Korea. After marriage they came back to Junction City, Kansas, 
where they made their home. Michael was an avid outdoorsman. He 
enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping here in Kansas. His favorite type 
of fish was crappies and blue-gills, once caught he would fry them up 
and eat with friends and family. Michael's son, Daniel was his fishing 
partner, they would catch sixty pound plus catfish together at the

Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at her home. A funeral 
service will take place 11 a.m. Friday, February 24, 2023 at Second 
Missionary Baptist Church. Burial will follow the funeral at Highland 
Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Thursday, 
February 23, 2023, at Second Missionary Baptist Church. Arlene was born June 18, 1950, in Fayetteville, North Carolina, the daughter of Emanuel and Thula (Brown) Roberts Sr. She
 operated a night club in Junction City, Kansas many years with Robert 
Lee Laster, Sr. She was also a stay at home mom where she raised her 
children and also took care of her brothers, sister and two nephews. She
 was a member at Second Missionary Baptist Church since 1993 where she 
enjoyed singing in the church choir. She enjoyed attending church 
revivals, playing bingo and playing cards. Survivors include one
 son, Harold Daniel Lacy of Wichita, Kansas; two daughters, Thula Lene 
Lacy of Manhattan, Kansas and Monica Oliva Lacy of Kansas City, Kansas; 
three grandchildren and one great-grandchild; two brothers, Emanuel 
Roberts, Jr. and Arthur Paul Roberts; one sister, Bessie Glover; two 
nephews, Joseph Roberts and Mythias Brown; one niece, Shantrail Chaney,

Robert “Bob” J. Fetch, 68, Bismarck, N.D., passed away in a house fire on Wednesday, February 15, 2023. 

A service is pending for this April at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

Robert was born on January 17, 1955, in Fort Riley/Junction City, 
Kansas, the son to Norman and Helen (Neibauer) Fetch. The family moved 
to Bismarck, where he was raised and educated attending Wilmore Grade 
School, Simle Middle School and graduated from Bismarck High School in 
1973. He enrolled at Bismarck Junior College where he attended until he 
entered the United States Air Force and served for two years in 
Missouri. He then returned to Bismarck and finished earning an 
Associates of Applied Science degree as an Electrical Technician. Bob 
worked for Bobcat for 21 years, leaving there in 2008 and then becoming a
 mail carrier, delivering first in Bismarck and then to rural areas, 
including Dawson, Steele and Sterling.

In 1999, he met Karyn Ohlhauser.&nbsp;They were married in 2005 and lived 
in Bismarck.&nbsp;Bob had a passion for cars and owned numerous cars 
throughout the years. As a senior in high school, he purchased a '55 
Chevy, which he redid on his own.&nbsp;He also brought a '69 Camaro into his 
collection and eventually he sold both of them to buy a '71 Corvette.&nbsp; 
Not only did he have a love for cars he could drive and fix, he enjoyed 
collecting and working on model cars also. Bob was an avid pool player 
and played in pool leagues throughout the years. He had a soft spot for 
animals and loved his cats.

He is survived by his wife, Karyn, Fargo; daughter, Lindsey Boushee, 
Bismarck; step-children, Mike (Billie Jo), Fargo, Dawn (Gunnar) Swanson,
 Rapid City, SD, Stephanie (Tony) Hopkins, Vergas, MN, and Michelle 
Kihlstrom, Bismarck; several step-grandchildren; siblings, Myron (Mary) 
Fetch, Bismarck, Victoria Carvell, Bismarck, Arlen (Sherry) Fetch, 
Mandan; and numerous and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a step-grandson, Michael.
