WICHITA, KAN. –&nbsp;Corrine N. Bowman, 41, Medicine Lodge, Kan., is charged with one count of bank fraud, according to the United State's Attorney.

The crime is alleged to have occurred from 2017 to 2019 in Medicine Lodge.

The indictment alleges Bowman, who was working for Bowe Chevrolet, used company funds to pay expenses for her and her family.

If convicted, she could faces up to 30 years in federal prison and a fine up to $1 million. The Kansas Bureau of Investigation investigated.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Recovering after a battle with COVID-19, President Donald Trump plunged back on Tuesday into playing down the disease that hospitalized him for three days and has so far killed more than 210,000 Americans. He compared it anew to the seasonal flu and signaled he plans to return soon to the campaign trail.

Back at the White House after a dramatic helicopter return from the military hospital where he was receiving an unprecedented level of care for COVID-19, Trump’s attitude alarmed infectious disease experts. And it suggested his own illness had not caused him to rethink his often-cavalier attitude toward the disease, which has also infected the first lady and more than a dozen White House aides and associates.

Anxious to project strength just four weeks from Election Day, Trump, who is still contagious with the virus, tweeted Tuesday morning that he is planning to attend next week’s debate with Democrat Joe Biden in Miami. “It will be great!” he said.

The President's doctor reported Tuesday Trump now had 'no symptoms' of COVID-19. However, Navy Cmdr. Sean Conley, said Monday afternoon that the president would not be fully “out of the woods” for another week.

Trump returned to the White House Monday night aboard Marine One, gingerly climbing the South Portico steps before removing his mask and giving a double thumbs-up from the terrace, where aides had arranged American flags for the sunset occasion. He entered the White House, where aides were visible milling about the Blue Room, without wearing a face covering.

In a video released later, Trump offered a nonchalant take on the virus, contravening the public health warnings of his own administration that Americans take the threat seriously and to take precautions to avoid contracting and spreading the disease as cases continue to spike across the country

“Don’t be afraid of it,” Trump said. “You’re going to beat it. We have the best medical equipment, we have the best medicines.” His remarks were strong, but he was taking deeper breaths than usual as he delivered them.

Left unsaid was that the president’s experience with the disease has been far from typical, as his doctors rushed him onto experimental antiviral drugs and prescribed an aggressive course of steroids that would be unavailable to the average patient. While most must cope with their symptoms — and fear of whether they’ll take a turn for the worse — at home and alone, Trump had been staying in the presidential suite of one of the nation’s best hospitals, and he’s now at the White House, where there is a team of doctors on call with 24-hour monitoring.

On Tuesday, Trump also returned to his previous comparisons of COVID-19 to the seasonal flu.

“Many people every year, sometimes over 100,000, and despite the Vaccine, die from the Flu,” he tweeted. “Are we going to close down our Country? No, we have learned to live with it, just like we are learning to live with Covid, in most populations far less lethal!!!”

In fact, COVID-19 has already proven to be a more potent killer, particularly among older populations, than seasonal flu, and has shown indications of having long-term impacts on the health of younger people it infects.

Just days before, Trump suggested he had finally grasped the true nature of the virus, saying in a video, “I get it,” moments before he ventured out of the hospital while contagious to salute cheering supporters by motorcade — an outing that disregarded precautions meant to contain the virus.

Trump’s efforts to play down the threat of the virus in hopes of propping up the economy ahead of the election have drawn bipartisan criticism.

Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas told the Houston Chronicle editorial board that Trump had “let his guard down” in his effort to show that the country was moving beyond the virus and had created “confusion” about how to stay safe.

“We have to be realistic in this: COVID is a complete threat to the American population,” Dr. David Nace of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, said of Trump’s comment.

“Most of the people aren’t so lucky as the president,” with an in-house medical unit and access to experimental treatments, added Nace, an expert on infections in older adults.

“It’s an unconscionable message,” agreed Dr. Sadiya Khan of Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. “I would go so far as to say that it may precipitate or worsen spread.”

Likewise, Biden, who spent more than 90 minutes on the debate stage with Trump last week, said during an NBC town hall Monday night that he was glad Trump seemed to be recovering well, “but there’s a lot to be concerned about -- 210,000 people have died. I hope no one walks away with the message that it’s not a problem.” Biden tested negative for the virus on Sunday.

Biden said he’d “listen to the science” ahead of the upcoming debates, adding that the campaigns and the debate commission should be “very cautious” in making plans. “If scientists say that it’s safe, that distances are safe, then I think that’s fine,” he said. “I’ll do whatever the experts say.”

Conley said that because of Trump’s unusual level of treatment so early after discovery of his illness he was in “uncharted territory.” But the doctor also was upbeat at an afternoon briefing and said the president could resume his normal schedule once “there is no evidence of live virus still present.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, those with mild to moderate symptoms of COVID-19 can be contagious for as many as — and should isolate for at least — 10 days.

Trump’s arrival back at the White House raised new questions about how the administration was going to protect other officials from a disease that remains rampant in the president’s body. Press secretary Kayleigh McEnany announced she had tested positive for the virus Monday morning and was entering quarantine.

There were also lingering questions about potential long-term effects to the president — and even when he first came down with the virus.

Conley repeatedly declined to share results of medical scans of Trump’s lungs, saying he was not at liberty to discuss the information because Trump did not waive doctor-patient confidentiality on the subject. COVID-19 has been known to cause significant damage to the lungs of some patients. Conley also declined to share the date of Trump’s most recent negative test for the virus — a critical point for contact tracing and understanding where Trump was in the course of the disease.

At the hospital, doctors revealed that his blood oxygen level had dropped suddenly twice in recent days and that they gave him a steroid typically only recommended for the very sick.

Trump left the hospital after receiving a fourth dose of the antiviral drug remdesivir Monday evening, Conley said. He will receive the fifth and final dose Tuesday at the White House.

Vice President Mike Pence returned to the campaign trail moments after Trump announced he would soon leave the hospital. The vice president boarded Air Force Two to fly to Salt Lake City, where he is to face off against Democratic vice presidential nominee Sen. Kamala Harris on Wednesday.

President continues recovery, compares COVID to flu

SALINA —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man for alleged DUI after a crash into a home in Salina.

Just before 4:30p.m. Monday, a 2003 Ford Escape driven by Juan Galvan, 35, Salina, was westbound in the 800 Block of Merrily Drive in Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester.&nbsp; The car struck the curb and then crashed into a home.

EMS transported Galvan to Salina Regional Health Center for treatment of minor head and neck injuries from the airbag deployment. Nobody inside the home was injured. However, the home sustained major damage and the city building inspector was called to the scene, according to Forrester.

Following his trip the hospital, police booked Galvan on requested charges that include,&nbsp;Driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol; 2nd conviction;(evidence of blood/breath .08+) Possession of marijuana, Possession of drug paraphernalia and Improper driving on laned roadway, according to Forrester.&nbsp; Police did release a damage estimate on the home.

Kansas man jailed after crash into Salina home

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting and have arrested 27-year-old Tishara R. Moran of Topeka.

Just after 11:30a.m. Saturday, police responded to a call for service at a home in the 300 Block of SW Polk for a check welfare, according to&nbsp;LT Jerry Monasmith.

On arrival, officers found 38-year-old Christopher McMillon with what appeared to be a gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.&nbsp;

As a result of the investigation, police arrested Moran on Monday, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Spiker.&nbsp; Moran is being held on requested charges of first-degree murder and aggravated robbery. The crime is Topeka's 22nd homicide of 2020, according to Spiker.

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting and have identified the victim as&nbsp; Christopher McMillon, 38, of Topeka.

NEW YORK (AP) —The top U.S. public health agency said Monday that the coronavirus can spread more than 6 feet through the air, especially in poorly ventilated and enclosed spaces. But agency officials maintained that such spread is uncommon and current social distancing guidelines still make sense.

However, several experts faulted the updated Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidance. They said the virus can spread more easily than the CDC seems to be indicating, and suggested that the public should wear masks even in prolonged outdoor gatherings when they are more than 6 feet apart.

The virus “is traveling through the air and there is no bright line. You’re not safe beyond 6 feet. You can’t take your mask off at 6 feet,” said Dr. Donald Milton of the University of Maryland School of Public Health.

For months, the CDC has said that the virus spreads mainly through small airborne droplets when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Most CDC guidance about social distancing is built around that idea, saying that 6 feet is a safe buffer between people who are not wearing masks.

In interviews, CDC officials have also acknowledged growing evidence that the virus can sometimes spread on even smaller particles called aerosols that spread over a wider area.

In the update posted on its website, the agency again acknowledged recent research showing people with COVID-19 infected others who were more than 6 feet away or shortly after an infected person left an area. CDC officials called those ”limited, uncommon circumstances.”

In those cases, spread occurred in poorly ventilated and enclosed spaces where people were doing activities that caused heavier breathing, like singing or exercise, CDC officials said.

CDC updates guidelines on how coronavirus spreads

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A man was fatally stabbed and another person arrested in the death following a police chase, authorities in Kansas City, Kansas, said.

The incident happened Saturday morning, when officers were called to investigate a report of a suspicious person.

Arriving officers found a man in the grass suffering from stab wounds. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.

A suspect fled the scene and was arrested after a car chase that involved the Kansas Highway Patrol, police said. Authorities have not released the names of the victim or the person arrested.

The stabbing was the 41st homicide in Kansas City, Kansas, this year. That compared with 23 homicides by the same time last year.

(AP) — A man was fatally stabbed and another person arrested in the death following a police chase, authorities in Kansas City, Kansas, said.The incident happened Saturday morning, when officers were called to investigate a report of a suspicious person.Arriving officers found a man in the grass suffering from stab wounds. He was taken to a hospital where he later died.A suspect fled the scene and was arrested after a car chase that involved the Kansas Highway Patrol, police said. Authorities have not released the names of the victim or the person arrested.The stabbing was the 41st homicide in Kansas City, Kansas, this year. That compared with 23 homicides by the same time last year.

TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) — Kansas expects to receive 870,000 rapid COVID-19 tests from the federal government over the next three months to boost testing in potential hot spots, Gov. Laura Kelly said Monday.

Kelly made the announcement as the state saw a record increase in coronavirus-related hospitalizations. She said the new tests are crucial for a new statewide policy of more testing of people without virus symptoms in areas with high infection rates and increasing routine testing in schools, nursing homes and prisons.

The state already has received its first 57,000 tests, Kelly said.

Kansas saw an average of more than 523.56 new confirmed and probable coronavirus cases a day in August and September, and the total now approaches 63,000 for the pandemic. The state Department of Health and Environment also reported Monday that Kansas has had 3,036 people hospitalized because of the virus, including 53 since Friday. The state averaged 26.29 new hospitalizations a day for the seven days ending Monday, 10% more than the previous record of 23.86 for the seven days ending Friday.

“I think it makes even more important — makes clear the importance of — everyone doing their part to stop the spread,” Kelly said during a Statehouse news conference. “We’ve been on a plateau now for quite a while, where, you know, we’re averaging over 500 cases, new cases, per day. You know, that’s not sustainable.”

President Donald Trump&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-virus-outbreak-donald-trump-archive-elections-7ad94115ac126ce1eb7a38bee6c5eedf">announced last week</a>&nbsp;that 100 million rapid COVID-19 tests from Abbott Laboratories would be shipped to states and urged them to use them to reopen schools. The company’s rapid test delivers results in about 15 minutes.

Trump’s announcement came only days before he tested positive for the coronavirus himself. After several days of treatment at a military hospital,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/virus-outbreak-donald-trump-archive-d39bd670e8a280b6283abcdfc91d4794">the president tweeted&nbsp;</a>Monday, “Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life. ... I feel better than I did 20 years ago!”

Kelly has spent months warning Kansas residents that the coronavirus is potentially dangerous and far more serious than the flu. The Democratic governor has been forced by the Republican-controlled Legislature to accept local officials’ control over mandating mask wearing, restricting businesses and public gatherings and deciding when K-12 schools would reopen.

The governor declined Monday to respond to Trump’s remarks after discussing how the state would use its new tests.

“We know that we’re going to target our high-risk areas,” Kelly said. “We’ll start with schools.”

The state health department reported that Kansas saw 1,597 new confirmed and probable coronavirus cases since Friday, an increase of 2.5%, bringing the total cases to 62,708. The number of coronavirus cases is thought to be higher because people can be infected without feeling ill and because of limited testing early in the pandemic.

The department also reported eight new COVID-19-related deaths since Friday, bringing the total to 706. Deaths have continued to represent about 1.1% of the total number of reported cases.

About 40 educators, parents and others on Monday protested the decision by the Lawrence School Board last week to shift to a hybrid learning model. The school had begun the year with remote learning.

Lawrence teachers and paraeducators held a “remote teach-in” in front of the district’s administration offices while also online with their students.

Hannah Allison, chair of the Paraeducators Union of Lawrence, said the group wants to extend and improve remote learning and not go to a hybrid model because the workload is “so much that we wouldn’t be able to do it and we wouldn’t be able to care for our own children at home.”

The group is asking to extend and improve remote learning so they have time to go back to school safely, she said.

“We — as paraeducators and teachers and students and parents — we believe that the people closest to the problem are closest to the solution and so we should be a part of crafting a plan for what it looks like to return to in-person,” Allison said.

🎥 Kansas to get 870K COVID-19 tests, sets hospitalization mark

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged sexual assault and have made an arrest.

Just after 12:30 a.m. Sunday, police responded to a rape report at a residence in the 700 block of South Everett in Wichita, according to officer Kevin Wheeler.

At the home, a 45-year-old woman reported that while walking near Lincoln and Main, a suspect identified as 59-year-old Raul Lopez-Garcia contacted her, forced her into a residence and sexually assaulted her. 

The victim left the residence after the assault and called 911 for help.

Through the investigation, officers determined Lopez-Garcia to be the suspect and learned that the assault occurred in a home in the 100 block of East Lincoln Street, according to Wheeler.

Police arrested Lopez-Garcia and he is being held on requested charges of rape and aggravated kidnapping.

The case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

Police: Kan. man sexually assaulted woman walking in neighborhood 

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — Two people from Kansas City, Kansas, are facing charges in a fatal shooting that happened last week. Lolester Mitchell of Kansas City, Kansas, was found dead inside a home on Tuesday. 

Authorities said Monday that 22-year-old Cooper Allan Beck was charged with intentional murder in the second degree and other crimes. He is jailed on $250,000 bond. 

Meanwhile, 38-year-old Billy Joe Blood is charged with conspiracy interference with a law enforcement officer, intimidation of a witness or victim, and other crimes. She is jailed on $50,000 bond. Police have not disclosed a motive in the killing.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — No charges will be filed in the death of a 56-year-old Wichita man who was killed by police last year during an apparent psychotic episode in which he fired 83 rounds from his apartment, the county’s top prosecutor said Monday.

Sedgwick County District Attorney Marc Bennett told reporters via a Zoom news conference that under the circumstances he could not charge the two officers who fired at Fred Burton. The hours-long standoff that began shortly before 2 a.m. on May 23, 2019, when a neighbor in the apartment complex reported hearing what sounded like explosions and found bullet holes in his wall.

Bennett recounted how officers used an armored vehicle to evacuate other occupants of the apartment complex to safety. The SWAT team used a public address system to contact Burton using a “safe word” that Burton had once given the apartment manager so he could distinguish reality from the voices in his head, he said.

During the standoff, Burton came to a sliding door in his apartment, extended a middle finger and exposed himself to officers, according to the report released by the district attorney’s office. Smoke rounds were fired in an attempt to get him out. Burton fired at officers, and two of them returned fire.

Burton was found dead inside the apartment along with a Remington .22 rifle and 83 spent shell casings. More than 30 bullet holes were in the wall. A toxicology report later determined he had methamphetamine in his blood.

“This is another in a long line of situations where people with mental illness and methamphetamine onboard, engage in behavior, engage with the police and it turns out in a very unfortunate manner,” Bennett said.

Under Kansas law, prosecutors would have to establish without a reasonable doubt that the shooting was not in self-defense or in the defense of others — something he could not do under the circumstances of this case, he said.

Prosecutor: No charges in death of mentally ill Kansas man

HUTCHINSON —&nbsp;A political science professor at the University of Kansas says it appears right now that the U.S. Senate race in Kansas is too close to call.

"We have four polls," Patrick Miller said. "The way you interpret polls is, you take the estimates, you stick that margin of error in and in all four polls, there is no clear leader in the poll in the sense that either candidate could actually be ahead, if we factor in the margin of error. At least in three of the four polls, one of the candidates, in one case, Bollier and in two cases Marshall is ahead by a little bit more. Polls are always going to vary."

Just because polls are different doesn't mean they aren't good.

"Good polls of the same race are not going to tell you the same exact thing, even if they are taken on the same day," Miller said. "I would just urge people to look at the body of polling and what that's telling you. That is that, among voters who are decided in the race, you seem to have no clear leader, but there is a chunk who are undecided."

The path to victory may seem theoretically easier for Roger Marshall, due to the Presidential race at the top of the ticket, but there is a path for Barbara Bollier, as well.

"Those individuals who are undecided in the Senate race, there is a chunk of them who are also undecided in the Presidential race," Miller said. "Whether those people are going to vote at all, who knows, whether they are just going to decide at the last minute, who knows, but there are a chunk who are undecided there, up for grabs. Among the undecided voters in the Senate race who know who they are voting for, for President, they do lean about two to one towards Trump."

The key to the race may be how many Trump voters Bollier can pick up or not.

WICHITA – A woman from Los Angeles was sentenced Monday to 18 months in federal prison for transporting 60 pounds of methamphetamine to Kansas, according to U.S. Attorney Stephen McAllister.

Maria Alvarez-Buenrostro, 47, Los Angeles, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine. 

In her plea, she admitted that the Kansas Highway Patrol stopped her car Feb. 12, 2019, in Ellis County. A trooper found the methamphetamine in heat-sealed bags hidden in a real quarter panel and in both rear doors.

WICHITA, Kan. (AP) — The downturn in airline travel amid the coronavirus pandemic could lead to years of decreased flights to fewer destinations and a dramatic drop in building improvements, particularly at smaller airports like the ones in Kansas.

The number of passengers who boarded flights in Wichita this year has dropped 57% compared to 2019, the Kansas News Service&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kmuw.org/post/kansas-airports-face-years-recovery-after-coronavirus-slowdown" target="_blank">reported</a>.

At its lowest point in April — when monthly traffic was down 95% compared to the year before — there was a day when only 63 people flew out of Dwight D. Eisenhower Airport in Wichita. Normally, the airport sees about 2,300 passengers a day, and a lot more during peak travel seasons.

“When no one is traveling, we’re not generating revenue,” said Valerie Wise, air service and business development manager.

Decreased revenue has led to slashed budgets and layoffs. The airport let go its customer courtesy staff. The parking lot operator closed the park-and-ride lot and laid off some drivers. And the Aviator Cafe is still closed.

Before the pandemic, the Wichita airport had seen seven straight years of growth. It added several new destinations and planned to add seven more in the next five years.

But now, the airport hopes just to keep the routes it has. There are currently only 22 daily departures, down from about 35 at the beginning of the year.

For smaller airports losing service is an even bigger existential concern.

Manhattan Regional Airport had three departing and three arriving flights from both Chicago and Dallas-Ft. Worth before the pandemic. It’s now down to two each way from Dallas. Boardings are down 56%.

A $2.1 million grant from the federal CARES Act, intended to offset the economic pain of the pandemic, is keeping the airport afloat for this year.

“If there isn’t additional funding that’s passed and we have this kind of environment that is long lasting, there’s going to be some difficult choices ahead,” said airport director Jesse Romo.

Kansas airports face years of recovery after pandemic

RENO COUNTY —&nbsp; One person died in a workplace accident on Monday morning in rural Reno County.

The Reno County Sheriff’s Department says that a man in his 60s was helping prepare a semi trailer hauling hay at Burling Mills, a feed mill near Arlington, Kansas, when he was run over around 10:20 a.m.

Steve Lutz with the Reno County Sheriff's Office says the victim and another man were prepping the trailer when the driver got in and pulled away. 

A few moments later they realized that the victim was not with them. They returned to find the man on the ground. It’s not known if the man bent over to pick something up and was hit by the semi or if he may have had a medical condition.

No name has been released. The accident remains under investigation.

RENO COUNTY—&nbsp; EMS and rescue crews have been called to the scene of an industrial accident in Reno County.

Just before 10:30 a.m. first responders traveled to 13215 S. Partridge Road where the custom feed mill Burling Mills Incorporated is located.

Authorities have released no additional details.

 </figure>RENO COUNTY —&nbsp; One person died in a workplace accident on Monday morning in rural Reno County.The Reno County Sheriff’s Department says that a man in his 60s was helping prepare a semi trailer hauling hay at Burling Mills, a feed mill near Arlington, Kansas, when he was run over around 10:20 a.m.Steve Lutz with the Reno County Sheriff's Office says the victim and another man were prepping the trailer when the driver got in and pulled away. A few moments later they realized that the victim was not with them. They returned to find the man on the ground. It’s not known if the man bent over to pick something up and was hit by the semi or if he may have had a medical condition.No name has been released. KDHE: Latest coronavirus numbers in Kansas

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged sexual assault and have a registered Kansas sex offender in custody.

Just after 7 p.m. Sept. 22, police were dispatched to a sexual assault case in the 800 block of South Sylvan in Wichita, according to officer Paul Cruz.

Upon arrival, a 48-year-old female victim, told police she was walking in the area of Lincoln and Oliver when a suspect later identified as 34-year-old Darrius Johnson approached and grabbed her, forcing her into his Toyota Camry.

Johnson drove the victim to a separate location and sexually assaulted her. Johnson then drove the victim back to Lincoln and Oliver where she was released. Through the investigation and examination of evidence, Johnson was determined to have been involved in the attack. 

On Sunday, police reported they arrested Johnson October 1, in the 2100 block of South White Oak without incident.&nbsp; He is being held on requested charges of rape and aggravated kidnapping, according to Cruz.

Johnson has a previous felony conviction in 2010 for attempted aggravated sexual battery where victim is overcome by force or fear, according to the KBI offender registry.

At the time of his arrest, Johnson was out on bond for a separate alleged sex crime., according to Cruz.

Kansas sex offender accused of rape, kidnapping

Saint Luke’s Health System says it will close its two community 
hospitals in Overland Park at the end of the year. Both hospitals opened
 just a couple of years ago.

The health system said declining patient volumes were behind the decision.

“Overall,
 our community hospital model has performed remarkably well and has 
allowed us to effectively expand access in a critical segment of our 
market,” Bobby Olm-Shipman, CEO of Saint Luke’s South and East, said in a
 statement.

“However, two of our locations have seen lower patient
 volumes since opening, and as we look at ways to provide care while 
operating as efficiently as possible during this challenging time, we 
have made the decision to close these two locations.”

The two locations, at 75th Street and Metcalf Avenue and 159th Street and 69 Highway, will close on Dec. 30.

The
 health system’s five remaining community hospitals will continue to 
provide service. Those facilities are located in Leawood, Olathe, 
Roeland Park, Shawnee, and Kansas City, Kansas.

Saint Luke’s launched the first of its community hospitals in 2018, when it opened the facility at 132nd
 Street and State Line Road in Leawood. Like its other community 
hospitals, the Leawood facility offers inpatient and emergency services 
on a smaller scale than the health system’s major hospitals. The idea is
 to bring patient care closer to where people live.

The COVID-19 pandemic, however, has taken a toll on the small hospitals' finances. In July, Saint Luke’s announced it was <a href="https://www.kcur.org/health/2020-07-02/faced-with-financial-strain-from-coronavirus-saint-lukes-closes-its-hospital-in-leavenworth-kansas" target="_blank">closing Cushing Hospital</a> in Leavenworth, Kansas, on Oct. 1, saying the pandemic had resulted in “significant financial strain.”

That
 occurred just months after Saint Luke’s converted Cushing from a 
traditional 74-bed hospital to one focused on emergency services. 
Cushing was founded in 1894. Saint Luke’s acquired it in 2007.

The
 Cushing announcement came shortly after Saint Luke’s announced a series
 of cost-saving measures system-wide, including streamlining care, 
eliminating nonessential expenditures and instituting a 90-day furlough 
for a “limited number” of employees.

According to the Kansas City 
Business Journal, Saint Luke’s reported $3.2 billion in revenue in 2018,
 the most recent year for which figures are available.

It’s the third largest private employer based in Kansas City, with nearly 10,000 full-time-equivalent employees as of July.

Saint Luke’s to close two community hospitals in Overland Park 

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has begun its new term with a remembrance of “a dear friend and a treasured colleague,” the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. Chief Justice John Roberts on Monday paid tribute to Ginsburg, who died last month, as the court resumed its work via telephone because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The justices are beginning a new term with Republicans on the cusp of realizing a dream 50 years in the making, a solid conservative majority that might roll back abortion rights, expand gun rights and shrink the power of government. The Senate could confirm President Donald Trump’s nominee for Ginsburg’s seat, Judge Amy Coney Barrett, before Election Day.

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court will begin hearing arguments Monday after a summer break. Here are some of the issues either already on the court’s docket or likely to be before the justices soon:

A week after the presidential election, the court will hear arguments in a bid by the Trump administration and Republican-led states to overturn the Obama-era health care law. Coverage for more than 20 million people is at stake, along with the law’s ban on insurance discrimination against Americans with pre-existing medical conditions.

President Donald Trump, who has promised but never delivered a replacement for the Affordable Care Act, and Democratic rival Joe Biden sparred over the case in the first presidential debate.

“Obamacare is no good. We made it better,” Trump said at one point. “He has no plan for health care,” Biden said of the president.

The high court has options that are less drastic than striking down the entire Affordable Care Act. It could invalidate the law’s now toothless requirement that most Americans carry health insurance but leave in place core provisions such as subsidized health insurance, Medicaid expansion and protection for people with medical problems.

Trump has already predicted that the 2020 election will end up at the Supreme Court. That’s part of why he says Amy Coney Barrett should be confirmed before Election Day to the seat left open by the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/us-supreme-court-ruth-bader-ginsburg-courts-684a0e1a2ae195ec32aa64684143e2f3">death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg</a>. Trump says he wants a full court to be available to weigh in on any campaign-related litigation.

Already, however, the court has confronted election-related cases from Wisconsin,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/1724e2b0a30ee9ad2019401dc7922e92">Alabama</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/rhode-island-clarence-thomas-neil-gorsuch-general-elections-politics-f86c690e52d078e428c9d5b5c04cab3f">Rhode Island</a>,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/388833270a7dcd91b338c50a177f20db">Florida&nbsp;</a>and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/0ae68b15f08f8bef920112803a1e3fe3">Texas.</a>&nbsp;Among the issues: ballot witness requirements and allowing all voters to vote by mail. The day after the election in November, the high court will hear&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/aed76866be42f523bec4a3651da6efeb">a dispute involving a Philadelphia Catholic agency that won’t place foster children with same-sex couples</a>. It’s a big test of religious rights and could be one of the first cases the court hears with Barrett on board, if Republicans succeed in confirming her before the election.

The justices will review an appeals court ruling that upheld the city’s decision to stop placing children with the Archdiocese of Philadelphia’s agency because it would not permit same-sex couples to serve as foster parents.

The appeals court ruled that the city did not target the agency, Catholic Social Services, because of its religious beliefs, but acted only to enforce its own nondiscrimination policy in the face of what seemed to be a clear violation.

The most high-profile, big-dollar case the justices will hear arguments in this month is a copyright&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/0a509efb8afb4fb6b71f1e7445171b5e">dispute between technology giants Oracle and Google</a>.

Most recently, after a jury sided with Google, an appeals court overturned that ruling.___MUELLER INVESTIGATIONIn December, the justices will hear arguments over whether Congress can have access to secret grand jury testimony from special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation — a legal process that began in summer 2019, before Trump was impeached by the House.The court already handed Trump a victory when it agreed in July to deny the Democrats who control the House access to the material before the election.It’s possible the justices never have to reach a definitive ruling in a sensitive dispute between the executive and legislative branches of government, if either Trump loses reelection or Republicans regain control of the House next year. It’s hard to imagine that a Biden administration would object to turning over the Mueller documents or that House Republicans would continue to press for them. Also unclear is how many new, or incendiary, revelations might be contained in the grand jury transcripts.
