GREAT BEND — Twenty-plus 
years went into the making of Aaron Mull's Dolly Madison Murder 
documentary. The Great Bend High School graduate actually spent 
approximately 16 months filming, compiling interviews, editing, and 
searching for a vendor about the 21-year-old double homicide in Great 
Bend. The documentary premiered at the Crest Theater in March and is now
 <a href="https://tubitv.com/movies/100002605/the-dolly-madison-murders?utm_campaign=web-sharing&amp;fbclid=IwAR0VAF3mfk_0g53Y1tT6jMf5MfXAxhuvqHog8Rf3AhC4nGsoJINGKxzLVPg">available to stream free on Tubi. </a>

"It's
 been a long time coming," Mull said. "The project took essentially one 
year to make and four months to distribute. It feels good that it's 
finally out there on a large scale, and people beyond Great Bend and the
 Midwest can reach this story now."

Sunday, Mull also released his
 deep-dive podcast about the case and the documentary on YouTube.com. 
The podcast features interviews with parties who contacted Mull after 
the release of the documentary, including the wife of the truck driver 
who found the bodies of Mandi Alexander and Mary Drake inside the 
discount bakery on Sept. 2, 2002. A local hotel clerk also shares her 
memories of that night.

"I think the podcast, it's what a lot of these people have wanted to 
say for a long time, but they've either gone to law enforcement, 
allegedly, and not been taken seriously, or they just haven't felt the 
need to come forward until now," said Mull. "I'm excited about both 
being out at the same time because each of them has a different feel, 
for sure."

While Mull's documentary was a more narrative-based 
attempt to put the case back before the public, the podcast features 
more speculation and opinion on why and how things were handled by law 
enforcement in the days and years following the murders. With law 
enforcement remaining largely silent about the case, Mull was left with 
one side of the discussion but said finger-pointing was never the goal.

"We
 need law enforcement to solve this case," he said. "I'm just a guy with
 an internet connection. They're the people with the resources and 
hopefully, someday the time to actually put into this case and other 
cases like it."

Dolly Madison Murder doc, podcast now available online

SEDGWICK COUNTY—The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and Kansas State Fire Marshall continue investigating the cause of a house fire Easter Sunday in Wichita that left&nbsp; 48-year-old Kendal James dead."

The explosion appears to have been caused by the illegal manufacturing of improvised explosives devices, according to  ATF spokesman John Ham. Evidence recovered at the scene has been sent to ATF’s forensics laboratory for analysis. That forensic testing will play a critical role in formulating a definitive cause, according to Ham.

Just after 5:30p.m. April 9. crews responded to a house fire near South Parkridge Street and West Blake Street,&nbsp;according to Wichita Fire Department Battalion Chief Jose Ocadiz.

While traveling to the scene, additional callers were reporting an explosion in the home. As crews were beginning to attack the blaze, another explosion occurred. This forced fire crews into a defensive mode before they could attempt to make entry into the residence.&nbsp;

When firefighters did get inside the home, investigators found James and several pets that had died.&nbsp; A second resident was not at home when the fire started, according to Ocadiz.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, according to Ocadiz. Due to the number of explosions, possibly three. One from the initial explosion, another as fire crews arrived and one later during the incident.&nbsp;

There have been initial reports from neighbors and a second resident of the home that fireworks were being manufactured, according to Ocadiz.

Wichita Police Explosive Ordinance team did remove some fireworks from the home, according to Ocadiz. However, investigators have not reported the specific type and the amount of fireworks discovered. Ocadiz did not release a damage estimate Monday morning.

ATF still investigating fatal Easter Sunday Kan. home explosion

DOUGLAS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on multiple requested charges after a standoff in Douglas County.

On April 23, police stopped a vehicle in the 100 Bock of North Michigan Street in Lawrence, according to a social media report.

The 32-year-old suspect, a passenger in the vehicle, has frequently been armed in the past and has caused several significant injuries to officers during arrests, was wanted on multiple outstanding warrants. He refused to get out of the vehicle.

Officers limited the threat to the public by ensuring the car could not be mobilized, utilizing the armored rescue vehicle and stop sticks under the tires. Officers attempted to use de-escalation techniques to talk the subject out of the car for almost an hour.

After deploying OC gas into the car, an arrest team converged on the car and forcibly removed the suspect, taking him into custody without further incident. The suspect was booked into the Douglas County Correctional Facility on the warrants as well as new requested charges related to this incident.

Police use pepper spray to end standoff with wanted Kan. suspect

WOOODSON COUNTY — One person was injured in an accident just after 10a.m. Monday in Woodson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2001 Freightliner semi driven by Gregory Lewis, 63, Leon, was eastbound on 80th Road a half mile east of Navajo Road southeast of Yates Center in southeast Kansas.

The driver failed to yield at a stop sign before crossing the railroad tracks. 

A Union Pacific train split the semi truck and trailer.&nbsp; The accident caused the derailment of approximately two dozen rail cars and five locomotives, according to Union Pacific spokesman Mike Jaixen. Most of the derailed cars were empty, but some were carrying cottonseed, plastic pellets, tall oil and fertilizer. 

EMS transported Lewis to Allen County Regional Hospital in Iola. The Union Pacific employees on board the train were not injured. Lewis was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

Pacific crews are clearing the derailed cars and preparing to repair and reopen the tracks. The incident is still under investigation, according to Union Pacific.

WASHINGTON —On Monday at the White House, the Bidens honored the 2023 Teachers of the Year including Brian Skinner of Newton for their excellence in teaching and commitment to students’ learning. 

Below are remarks by President Biden and the First Lady at the 2023 National State Teachers of the Year Celebration.

You know, it meant so much to me getting some time with all of you today. And I loved hearing about the moments that bring you joy and laughter and about your challenges as well. Because, hey, we’ve all been there, haven’t we?

This job isn’t always easy, but it matters. And the Biden-Harris administration understands that.

I always knew that Joe would be a great education President. (Applause.) Because he’s seen how hard you work and how much you help our students. And that’s why he’s done so much to support better pay and loan forgiveness. (Applause.)

AUDIENCE MEMBER: Thank you, Joe! Thank you!

THE FIRST LADY: (Laughs.) It’s why he put a public-school educator in charge of the Department of Education. (Applause.)

So we’re here to take a moment on one of the biggest stages in the world, the White House, to say that teachers change lives. (Applause.)

And I think that message matters more than ever. Because lately, when I turn on the TV, I see pundits and politicians talking about our profession. I hear them attacking our public schools, distorting the truth about what we do, and saying that parents and teachers are at odds.

But that’s not what I’ve seen. As I’ve traveled this country, I’ve visited some pretty amazing programs where parents and teachers are working hand in hand to help kids overcome challenges and make our schools better for everyone.

There’s no divide between those who love our students and those who teach them — because we all do both. (Applause.)

Parents know that we are our children’s first teachers. And educators know that this isn’t just a job that we walk away from at 3:15. (Laughter and applause.) When we’re caring for our own kids, we’re thinking about someone else’s children too.

We chose this path out of love for what we do and who we teach.

Parents and educators are partners. And we, together — we know what our students need.

They need kindness and respect. They need grace and the chance to make mistakes. They need room to explore this world, to be curious and surprised and disappointed and triumphant. They need to know that they are valued and safe.

And parents can’t always do that alone. Parents don’t want to do that alone.

Every day, they put a piece of their hearts on that school bus, send their kids to school, trusting, hoping that someone will listen when they can’t; answer questions and ignite imaginations; and Band-Aid scrapes when, you know, they aren’t there to do it themselves.

You fulfill that hope every single day. (Applause.) Yes, thank you. (Applause.)

And with their parents’ love and your guidance, with the faith and the fortitude of their community behind them, students grow into the people they dream of becoming. Together, you shape and shepherd their lives.

My grandmother was a teacher in a small town in New Jersey.

THE FIRST LADY: (Laughs.) Over th- — there she is, New Jers- — (laughter) —

And she loved her work, and her students loved her in return. And just like you might see in the movies, she used to call her students to class with a big brass bell. And when she died, she didn’t leave behind a big, giant estate. But what I inherited from her, what I still have to this day, is that bell.

And I sometimes think about how her legacy resonated into the world like waves of sound, changing those who heard its ring.

And I think of every student who she taught, you know, and wonder what amazing things they grew up to do. Perhaps they are doctors or architects or scientists. And, of course, there’s at least one teacher.

Today, all of you ring your own bell, pulling each person you teach into a harmony that never ends.

Right now, someone out there is a better thinker because of you. Someone is standing a little taller because you helped her find the confidence that she needed. Someone is working a little harder because you pushed him to try. Someone is kinder because you showed her what that meant. And someone is braver because you helped him find his courage.

Never stop ringing that bell. Never forget that, student by student, the lives you change go on to change the world.

And now, I’m proud to introduce someone who has answered her call with passion, persistence, and pride: the 2023 National Teacher of the Year, Rebecka Peterson. (Applause.)

MS. PETERSON: Thank you, Dr. Biden. It’s such a tremendous honor to be recognized by a First Lady who champions the profession as one of us. You exhibit for the nation the dedication we all feel for this profession.

And thank you, Secretary Cardona, for keeping teachers at the center of your work.

Thank you to my family. Without your support, I couldn’t be here today.

Well, today I stand in front of you with the name Rebecka Peterson, yet the name I was given at birth is Rebecka Mozdeh Kermashahi, a beautiful intersection of my two family cultures — Rebecka from my mother’s Swedish heritage, Kermashahi and Mozdeh from my father’s Iranian heritage.

My parents and I immigrated to the United States when I was young. And at 20, I finally became a U.S. citizen. I may not have been born here, but I consider myself a daughter of this country.

I’ve been lucky to witness the beauty of our nation from a, perhaps, different lens — a lens that pays special attention to those people who wrap their arms around those of us who may be a little bit different.

Often, those people who held me, literally and figuratively, were my teachers. They channeled their influence for good. And I was always in awe of the power that they held.

“Bearer of good news,” the meaning of my Iranian name, is the phrase I’ve spent my career leaning into. Just like my own teachers, my fellow state teachers of the year, and the millions of other teachers in this country, I want to bring the good news of joy and hope to my students, and to reciprocate that gift of education that my teachers gave me.

As educators, we stand with one foot firmly grounded in the reality of what is while the other stands in the promise of what can be. We are fueled by the equalizing power of public education to dismantle marginalization, eliminate systemic inequities, and end generational poverty. (Applause.)

I teach because of Reeya, Meghana, and Kushi to show that immigrant and first-generation women do have a place in STEM. (Applause.)

I teach because of Danny, one of seven family members who lived in a one-bedroom apartment but who will be attending an Ivy League college this fall in the hopes of making a better life for his and his family — him and his family. (Applause.)

And I teach because of Morgan and Alyssa — once my students, now my colleagues — who are impacting lives in their very own classrooms.

I teach because it gives me life to offer the American Dream to the next generation.

Teachers, you hold our democracy. You create spaces that insist we belong to each other.

May we continue to reach inward and outward.

May we be an example of creativity and service, modeling the importance of curiosity in both the big and the small moments.

May we learn how to belong to ourselves so we can belong to each other.

May we walk this life together with open hearts and open hands, because I slutändan, kanske vi alla bara går hem till varandra. “In the end, maybe we’re all — all of us — just walking each other home.”

And now I’m pleased to introduce a President who honors the good news that teachers bring. He knows we can belong to each other and be different, we can belong to each other and disagree.

This is a President who knows we can belong to each other the way our students have taught us we can.

It’s now my honor to introduce the proud husband of an educator, President Biden. (Laughter and applause.)

THE PRESIDENT: Well, she’s pretty good, isn’t she? (Laughter.) Holy mackerel.

Good afternoon, everybody. I’m glad it’s a lovely day.

I’m Joe Biden, Jill Biden’s husband. (Laughter.)

Secretary Cardona, thank you for fighting so hard for our nation’s children and our teachers.

And thank you for the members of Congress who are here today, including two outstanding educating congresswomen: Johnna [Jahana] — and, by the way, Johnna [Jahana] Hayes is — Johnna [Jahana], where are you? There you are, Johnna [Jahana]. Right in front of me. Stand up, Johnna [Jahana]. Johnna [Jahana] happens to be a teacher — happens to be the 2016 National Teacher of the Year. (Applause.)

By the way, she’s pretty good, isn’t she? (Laughter.) I think she could run. (Laughter.)

Folks, you all know what a big deal that is. And — and Congressman Jamaal Bowman. Congressman, where are you? Jamaal, good to see you, pal. (Applause.) A teacher who went on to establish a middle school.

And most of all, I want to welcome our guests of honor, the 2023 Teachers of the Year. Again, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. (Applause.)

Folks, if you didn’t know it before, we hope you know now: Teachers have several champions in the White House. (Laughter.) Jill and I and Kamala and Doug.

Jill is the country’s first First Lady to work full time — full time teaching while doing her duties as First Lady, as a community college professor in Virginia. (Applause.)

And I tell you what: She is a proud member of her union as well. (Applause.)

Jill reminds me all the time that teaching is not just what you do, it’s who you are. It’s who you are.

So I want to stand by saying to every teacher here today and every teacher across the country: Thank you, thank you, thank you. And I mean it.

But as we’ve seen the past few years, a difficult profession has gotten even harder.

And we ask so much of our nation’s teachers: early mornings greeting students, late nights grading papers.

By the way, if you ever see me getting off of Air Force One in another country with Jill carrying a big bag — (laughter) — she’s correcting papers. (Laughter.) Oh, you think I’m kidding? I’m not — I’m not joking.

And so, folks, there’s no [the] math league or basketball team you coach after school.

They call you to make parents — meet them during — you call parents during the lunch hour if they’re child is having a little bit of difficulty. Your child you pull aside during the planning period because they need extra help.

And, folks, and teaching over Zoom during the pandemic.

And, by the way, a sidelight here: A lot of parents had to drive up to McDonald’s to be able to get online. We’re changing that. Everybody is going have access. Everybody. (Applause.)

But at any rate — to bringing extra snacks when your students, because they can’t learn when they’re hungry, and spending your own money — your own money — on school supplies.

You’re explaining the unexplainable, from banned books to duck-and-cover drills. How do you explain that to a child in the year 2023?

We ask so much of you. And each and every time, you all step up and say yes. And the impact you have on our students is profound.

As Jill just mentioned, every single one of us here is at least in part here because of somewhere along the way we had a teacher who believed in us. And I bet you can name your teacher. I can name the one who believed in me. I can name her in grade school and in college. Helped me believe in ourselves: That’s what you do.

That’s the power of a great teacher. And the teachers represented here today, you’re the best of the best of the best. Thank you. (Applause.)

Congratulations to each and every one of you.

As they say in the United States Senate, in which I served a long time, if you’ll please excuse a point of personal privilege, I want to give a special mention to Ashley Lockwood from the state of Delaware. Ashley, stand up. (Applause.) And besides, our daughter’s name is Ashley as well. (Laughter.)

Ash, thanks for what you do, kiddo. You make us proud.

THE PRESIDENT: And of course, a huge congratulations to Rebecka Peterson from Oklahoma, our Teacher of the Year. (Applause.)

Rebecka moved to the United States as a little girl, the daughter of medical missionaries.

She spoke Swedish at first, knew only two words in English, two words her parents were most — thought were the most important for her to learn: “Thank you.” “Thank you.”

Soon, Rebecka’s teachers here in America changed everything about her. All the teachers we had here, they changed — they gave her a chance — she’s — I’m not even — I don’t know what she thought at the time.

Instead of making her feel self-conscious that she didn’t speak English, they told her she was — she was “linguistically gifted” and taught her how to read.

They saw how much she loved math and said she was a “superpower.”

One day, a teacher told her, “I think you should be a teacher.” And Rebecka says, “Those words were a song to my heart.” A song to my heart. Well, you’re still singing, kid. (Laughter.)

And so, Rebecka put her superpower to work, and she became a calculus teacher.

Oh, God, do I remember calculus. (Laughter.) (Makes sign of the cross.) (Laughter.) I went to a school — it was prep school. It was very heavy on — on mathematics. Anyway — (laugher) — that’s why, when I got to college, I majored in history and pollical science. (Laughter.)

God bless the calculus teachers, and that is no joke. (Laughter.)

And what’s more, Rebecka’s school district is full of students who were a lot like she was.

The students in her district speak 62 different languages — 62. Many feel like they don’t quite belong. As you can imagine, Rebecka makes sure that they know that they do belong and they can achieve great things.

With Rebecka leading the way, the pass rate in her class went from 50 percent to 87 percent, nearly double the state average. (Applause.)

More of her students became National Merit Finalists than the entire rest of the district combined.

And, in the ultimate tribute, several of her former students are now math teachers themselves, as was referenced earlier.

White House honors educators including teacher from Kansas

STEVENS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged child abuse in Stevens County.

On Monday, police reported officers were dispatched April 17 to a home in the 700 Block of South Harrison Street in Hugoton to check on the welfare of a child, according to a media release.

Officers found a 3-year-old boy with visible signs of abuse. Investigators also learned that on more than one occasion, the child had been left alone at the home for long periods of time.

Investigators removed the child from the home and placed him into&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;protective custody. Officers arrested 19-year-0ld Chandra Clark of Hugoton on a requested charge of child abuse and aggravated endangering a child. They also arrested 20-year-old Garrette Hinds on a requested charge of aggravated endangering a child.&nbsp;

STEVENS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating alleged child abuse in Stevens County.On Monday, police reported officers were dispatched April 17 to a home in the 700 Block of South Harrison Street in Hugoton to check on the welfare of a child, according to a media release.Officers found a 3-year-old boy with visible signs of abuse. Investigators also learned that on more than one occasion, the child had been left alone at the home for long periods of time.Investigators removed the child from the home and placed him into&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;protective custody. Officers arrested 19-year-0ld Chandra Clark of Hugoton on a requested charge of child abuse and aggravated endangering a child. They also arrested 20-year-old Garrette Hinds on a requested charge of aggravated endangering a child.&nbsp;The case has been forward to the Stevens County Attorney.

NEW YORK (AP) — Harry Belafonte, the civil rights and entertainment giant who began as a groundbreaking actor and singer and became an activist, humanitarian and conscience of the world, has died. He was 96.

Belafonte died Tuesday of congestive heart failure at his New York home, his wife Pamela by his side, said Ken Sunshine, of public relations firm Sunshine Sachs Morgan &amp; Lylis.

With his glowing, handsome face and silky-husky voice, Belafonte was one of the first Black performers to gain a wide following on film and to sell a million records as a singer; many still know him for his signature hit "Banana Boat Song (Day-O)," and its call of "Day-O! Daaaaay-O." But he forged a greater legacy once he scaled back his performing career in the 1960s and lived out his hero Paul Robeson's decree that artists are "gatekeepers of truth."

He stands as the model and the epitome of the celebrity activist. Few kept up with Belafonte's time and commitment and none his stature as a meeting point among Hollywood, Washington and the civil rights movement.

Belafonte not only participated in protest marches and benefit concerts, but helped organize and raise support for them. He worked closely with his friend and generational peer the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., often intervening on his behalf with both politicians and fellow entertainers and helping him financially. He risked his life and livelihood and set high standards for younger Black celebrities, scolding Jay Z and Beyonce for failing to meet their "social responsibilities," and mentoring Usher, Common, Danny Glover and many others. In Spike Lee's 2018 film "BlacKkKlansman," he was fittingly cast as an elder statesman schooling young activists about the country's past.

Belafonte's friend, civil rights leader Andrew Young, would note that Belafonte was the rare person to grow more radical with age. He was ever engaged and unyielding, willing to take on Southern segregationists, Northern liberals, the billionaire Koch brothers and the country's first Black president, Barack Obama, whom Belafonte would remember asking to cut him "some slack."

Belafonte responded, "What makes you think that's not what I've been doing?"

Belafonte had been a major artist since the 1950s. He won a Tony Award in 1954 for his starring role in John Murray Anderson's "Almanac" and five years later became the first Black performer to win an Emmy for the TV special "Tonight with Harry Belafonte."

In 1954, he co-starred with Dorothy Dandridge in the Otto Preminger-directed musical "Carmen Jones," a popular breakthrough for an all-Black cast. The 1957 movie "Island in the Sun" was banned in several Southern cities, where theater owners were threatened by the Ku Klux Klan because of the film's interracial romance between Belafonte and Joan Fontaine.

His "Calypso," released in 1955, became the first officially certified million-selling album by a solo performer, and started a national infatuation with Caribbean rhythms (Belafonte was nicknamed, reluctantly, the "King of Calypso"). Admirers of Belafonte included a young Bob Dylan, who debuted on record in the early '60s by playing harmonica on Belafonte's "Midnight Special."

"Harry was the best balladeer in the land and everybody knew it," Dylan later wrote. "He was a fantastic artist, sang about lovers and slaves — chain gang workers, saints and sinners and children. ... Harry was that rare type of character that radiates greatness, and you hope that some of it rubs off on you."

Belafonte befriended King in the spring of 1956 after the young civil rights leader called and asked for a meeting. They spoke for hours, and Belafonte would remember feeling King raised him to the "higher plane of social protest." Then at the peak of his singing career, Belafonte was soon producing a benefit concert for the bus boycott in Montgomery, Alabama that helped make King a national figure. By the early 1960s, he had decided to make civil rights his priority.

"I was having almost daily talks with Martin," Belafonte wrote in his memoir "My Song," published in 2011. "I realized that the movement was more important than anything else."

The Kennedys were among the first politicians to seek his opinions, which he willingly shared. John F. Kennedy, at a time when Blacks were as likely to vote for Republicans as for Democrats, was so anxious for his support that during the 1960 election he visited Belafonte at his Manhattan home. Belafonte schooled Kennedy on the importance of King, and arranged for them to speak.

"I was quite taken by the fact that he (Kennedy) knew so little about the Black community," Belafonte told NBC in 2013. "He knew the headlines of the day, but he wasn't really anywhere nuanced or detailed on the depth of Black anguish or what our struggle's really about."

Belafonte would often criticize the Kennedys for their reluctance to challenge the Southern segregationists who were then a substantial part of the Democratic Party. He argued with Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, the president's brother, over the government's failure to protect the "Freedom Riders" trying to integrate bus stations. He was among the Black activists at a widely publicized meeting with the attorney general, when playwright Lorraine Hansberry and others stunned Kennedy by questioning whether the country even deserved Black allegiance.

"Bobby turned red at that. I had never seen him so shaken," Belafonte later wrote.

In 1963, Belafonte was deeply involved with the March on Washington. He recruited his close friend Sidney Poitier, Paul Newman and other celebrities and persuaded the left-wing Marlon Brando to co-chair the Hollywood delegation with the more conservative Charlton Heston, a pairing designed to appeal to the broadest possible audience. In 1964, he and Poitier personally delivered tens of thousands of dollar to activists in Mississippi after three "Freedom Summer" volunteers were murdered — the two celebrities were chased by car at one point by members of the KKK. The following year, he brought in Tony Bennett, Joan Baez and other singers to perform for the marchers in Selma, Alabama.

When King was assassinated, in 1968, Belafonte helped pick out the suit he was buried in, sat next to his widow, Coretta, at the funeral, and continued to support his family, in part through an insurance policy he had taken out on King in his lifetime.

"Much of my political outlook was already in place when I encountered Dr. King," Belafonte later wrote. "I was well on my way and utterly committed to the civil rights struggle. I came to him with expectations and he affirmed them."

King's death left Belafonte isolated from the civil rights community. He was turned off by the separatist beliefs of Stokely Carmichael and other "Black Power" activists and had little chemistry with King's designated successor, the Rev. Ralph Abernathy. But the entertainer's causes extended well beyond the U.S.

He mentored South African singer and activist Miriam Makeba and helped introduce her to American audiences, the two winning a Grammy in 1964 for the concert record "An Evening With Belafonte/Makeba." He coordinated Nelson Mandela's first visit to the U.S. since being released from prison in 1990. A few years earlier, he initiated the all-star, million-selling "We Are the World" recording, the Grammy-winning charity song for famine relief in Africa.

Belafonte's early life and career paralleled those of Poitier, who died in 2022. Both spent part of their childhoods in the Caribbean and ended up in New York. Both served in the military during World War II, acted in the American Negro Theatre and then broke into film. Poitier shared his belief in civil rights, but still dedicated much of his time to acting, a source of some tension between them. While Poitier had a sustained and historic run in the 1960s as a leading man and box office success, Belafonte grew tired of acting and turned down parts he regarded as "neutered."

"Sidney radiated a truly saintly dignity and calm. Not me," Belafonte wrote in his memoir. "I didn't want to tone down my sexuality, either. Sidney did that in every role he took."

Belafonte was very much a human being. He acknowledged extra-marital affairs, negligence as a parent and a frightening temper, driven by lifelong insecurity. "Woe to the musician who missed his cue, or the agent who fouled up a booking," he confided.

In his memoir, he chastised Poitier for a "radical breach" by backing out on a commitment to star as Mandela in a TV miniseries Belafonte had conceived, then agreeing to play Mandela for a rival production. He became so estranged from King's widow and children that he was not asked to speak at her funeral. In 2013, he sued three of King's children over control of some of the civil rights leader's personal papers. In his memoir, he would allege that the King children were more interested in "selling trinkets and memorabilia" than in serious thought.

He made news years earlier when he compared Colin Powell, the first Black secretary of state, to a slave "permitted to come into the house of the master" for his service in the George W. Bush administration. He was in Washington in January 2009 as Obama was inaugurated, officiating along with Baez and others at a gala called the Inaugural Peace Ball. But Belafonte would later criticize Obama for failing to live up to his promise and lacking "fundamental empathy with the dispossessed, be they white or Black."

Belafonte did occasionally serve in government, as cultural adviser for the Peace Corps during the Kennedy administration and decades later as goodwill ambassador for UNICEF. For his film and music career, he received the motion picture academy's Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, a National Medal of Arts, a Grammy for lifetime achievement and numerous other honorary prizes. He found special pleasure in winning a New York Film Critics Award in 1996 for his work as a gangster in Robert Altman's "Kansas City."

"I'm as proud of that film critics' award as I am of all my gold records," he wrote in his memoir.

He was married three times, most recently to photographer Pamela Frank, and had four children. Three of them — Shari, David and Gina — became actors.

Harry Belafonte was born Harold George Bellanfanti Jr. in 1927, in a community of West Indians in Harlem. His father was a seaman and cook with Dutch and Jamaican ancestry and his mother, part Scottish, worked as a domestic. Both parents were undocumented immigrants and Belafonte recalled living "an underground life, as criminals of a sort, on the run."

The household was violent: Belafonte sustained brutal beatings from his father, and he was sent to live for several years with relatives in Jamaica. Belafonte was a poor reader — he was probably dyslexic, he later realized — and dropped out of high school, soon joining the Navy. While in the service, he read "Color and Democracy'' by the Black scholar W.E.B. Du Bois and was deeply affected, calling it the start of his political education.

After the war, he found a job in New York as an assistant janitor for some apartment buildings. One tenant liked him enough to give him free tickets to a play at the American Negro Theatre, a community repertory for black performers. Belafonte was so impressed that he joined as a volunteer, then as an actor. Poitier was a peer, both of them "skinny, brooding and vulnerable within our hard shells of self-protection," Belafonte later wrote.

Belafonte met Brando, Walter Matthau and other future stars while taking acting classes at the New School for Social Research. Brando was an inspiration as an actor, and he and Belafonte became close, sometimes riding on Brando's motorcycle or double dating or playing congas together at parties. Over the years, Belafonte's political and artistic lives would lead to friendships with everyone from Frank Sinatra and Lester Young to Eleanor Roosevelt and Fidel Castro.

His early stage credits included "Days of Our Youth" and Sean O'Casey's "Juno and the Peacock," a play Belafonte remembered less because of his own performance than because of a backstage visitor, Robeson, the actor, singer and activist.

"What I remember more than anything Robeson said, was the love he radiated, and the profound responsibility he felt, as an actor, to use his platform as a bully pulpit," Belafonte wrote in his memoir. His friendship with Robeson and support for left-wing causes eventually brought trouble from the government. FBI agents visited him at home and allegations of Communism nearly cost him an appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show." Leftists suspected, and Belafonte emphatically denied, that he had named names of suspected Communists so he could perform on Sullivan's show.

By the 1950s, Belafonte was also singing, finding gigs at the Blue Note, the Vanguard and other clubs — he was backed for one performance by Charlie Parker and Max Roach — and becoming immersed in folk, blues, jazz and the calypso he had heard while living in Jamaica. Starting in 1954, he released such top 10 albums as "Mark Twain and Other Folk Favorites" and "Belafonte," and his popular singles included "Mathilda," "Jamaica Farewell" and "The Banana Boat Song," a reworked Caribbean ballad that was a late addition to his "Calypso" record.

"We found ourselves one or two songs short, so we threw in `Day-O' as filler," Belafonte wrote in his memoir.

He was a superstar, but one criticized, and occasionally sued, for taking traditional material and not sharing the profits. Belafonte expressed regret and also worried about being typecast as a calypso singer, declining for years to sing "Day-O" live after he gave television performances against banana boat backdrops.

Belafonte was the rare young artist to think about the business side of show business. He started one of the first all-Black music publishing companies. He produced plays, movies and TV shows, including Off-Broadway's "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black," in 1969. He was the first Black person to produce for TV.

Belafonte made history in 1968 by filling in for Johnny Carson on the "Tonight" show for a full week. Later that year, a simple, spontaneous gesture led to another milestone. Appearing on a taped TV special starring Petula Clark, Belafonte joined the British singer on the anti-war song "On the Path of Glory." At one point, Clark placed a hand on Belafonte's arm. The show's sponsor, Chrysler, demanded the segment be reshot. Clark and Belafonte resisted, successfully, and for the first time a man and woman of different colors touched on national television.

In the 1970s, he returned to movie acting, co-starring with Poitier in "Buck and the Preacher," a commercial flop, the raucous and popular comedy "Uptown Saturday Night." His other film credits include "Bobby," "White Man's Burden," and cameos in Altman's "The Player" and "Ready to Wear." He also appeared in the Altman-directed TV series "Tanner on Tanner" and was among those interviewed for "When the Levees Broke," Spike Lee's HBO documentary about Hurricane Katrina. In 2011, HBO aired a documentary about Belafonte, "Sing Your Song."

Mindful to the end that he grew up in poverty, Belafonte did not think of himself as an artist who became an activist, but an activist who happened to be an artist.

"When you grow up, son," Belafonte remembered his mother telling him, "never go to bed at night knowing that there was something you could have done during the day to strike a blow against injustice and you didn't do it."

In addition to his wife, Belafonte is survived by his children Adrienne Belafonte Biesemeyer, Shari Belafonte, Gina Belafonte and David Belafonte; two stepchildren, Sarah Frank and Lindsey Frank; and eight grandchildren.

Republican leaders plan to attempt overriding Kelly's veto once the full GOP-controlled Legislature reconvenes Wednesday to wrap up its business for the year. Backers of the bill included Americans for Prosperity, the grassroots low-tax, small-government group funded by the billionaire industrialist Koch brothers. Supporters appeared to have a good chance of getting the two-thirds majorities necessary to override a veto.

“It is a throwback to the Brownback tax experiment, and we all know how that turned out,” Kelly told reporters, hitting&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/f5741d8d0d8c40979857c9d2d6afae9f">a key theme</a>&nbsp;of her successful 2018 and 2022 campaigns for governor. “Any tax cut we pass needs to be sustainable, fiscally responsible and targeted to the people who need it the most.”

<a href="http://www.kslegislature.org/li/b2023_24/measures/documents/summary_sb_169_2023">The measure</a>&nbsp;also would have reduced taxes on retirees' Social Security incomes and accelerate phasing out of the state's sales tax on groceries, so that it would end at the start of 2024 instead of 2025, both measures Kelly supported. It also would have reduced property taxes for most homeowners by $46 a year, a proposal pushed by Democrats.

The income tax changes were a nonstarter for many Democrats, particularly because it set the rate at 5.15% when the state's current top rate is 5.7%.

As an alternative, Kelly proposed a one-time, $450 rebate for each Kansas individual filer, so that the state's revenues would not be reduced each year going forward.

Republicans&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-personal-taxes-kansas-topeka-state-taxes-9c8e53d13a10b9bdd113db8a64be5d52">have been cold to the idea</a>&nbsp;of a rebate in the past. Senate President Ty Masterson, a Wichita-area Republican, called the rebate proposal “gimmicky” and tells people that the governor sees tax dollars as “her money,” rather than "recognizing the money we collect belongs to the people.”

Kansas' tax collections&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/business-topeka-kansas-personal-taxes-legislature-090092b19f2e7de084f5b48cdcb7acaf">generally have run ahead</a>&nbsp;of expectations since lawmakers repealed most of the tax experiment under Brownback in 2017.

And the veto came four days after state officials and university economists issued a new fiscal forecast that boosted the state's official projections for tax collections through June 2024 by roughly 1%. Even with the tax cuts Kelly vetoed factored in, the state is on track to end June 2024 with surplus cash and rainy day funds of more than $4 billion.

Kelly and lawmakers in both parties see the tax cuts as a way of helping people deal with inflation.

"It’s especially careless and out-of-touch for Governor Kelly to veto this broad, sustainable tax policy that provides tax relief to ALL Kansans," House Speaker Dan Hawkins, a Wichita Republican, said in a statement.
