MCDONALD COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities continue asking the public to help them locate 49-year-old Dawn Wynn.&nbsp;She is accused of murder and armed criminal action in the November 2021 shooting of her husband in southwest Missouri, according to McDonald County Missouri Sheriff&nbsp;Rob Evenson. She is charged with shooting her husband in the back of the head while he slept.

&nbsp;She should be considered dangerous and could be armed. She is described as 5-foot-2, 150-170 pounds with short black hair.

  Due to a recent Missouri Supreme Court ruling, over objections from the prosecuting attorney, Wynn was out on bond and on pre-trial release where she had to check in by telephone, according to Evenson.

The third-term congresswoman and her allies entered the day downbeat about her prospects, aware that Trump’s backing gave Harriet Hageman considerable lift in the state where he won by the largest margin during the 2020 campaign. Cheney was already looking ahead to a political future beyond Capitol Hill that could include a 2024 presidential run, potentially putting her on another collision course with&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/donald-trump">Trump</a>.

Cheney described her loss as the beginning of a new chapter in her political career as she addressed a small collection of supporters, including her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, on the edge of a vast field flanked by mountains and bales of hay.

“Our work is far from over,” she said Tuesday evening, evoking Abraham Lincoln, who also lost congressional elections before ascending to the presidency and preserving the union.

The results — and the roughly 30-point margin — were a powerful reminder of the GOP’s rapid shift to the right. A party once dominated by national security-oriented, business-friendly conservatives like her father now belongs to Trump, animated by his populist appeal and, above all, his denial of defeat in the 2020 election.

Such lies, which have been roundly rejected by federal and state election officials along with Trump’s own attorney general and judges he appointed, transformed Cheney from an occasional critic of the former president to the clearest voice inside the GOP warning that he represents a threat to democratic norms. She's the top Republican on the House panel investigating the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/capitol-siege">Jan. 6, 2021, insurrection</a>&nbsp;at the U.S. Capitol by a mob of Trump supporters, an attack she referenced in nodding to her political future.

“I have said since Jan. 6 that I will do whatever it takes to ensure Donald Trump is never again anywhere near the Oval Office — and I mean it," she said.

Four hundred miles to the east of Cheney’s concession speech, festive Hageman supporters gathered at a sprawling outdoor rodeo and Western culture festival in Cheyenne, many wearing cowboy boots, hats and blue jeans.

“Obviously we’re all very grateful to President Trump, who recognizes that Wyoming has only one congressional representative and we have to make it count,” said Hageman, a ranching industry attorney who had finished third in a previous bid for governor.

Echoing Trump’s conspiracy theories, she falsely claimed the 2020 election was “rigged” as she courted his loyalists in the runup to the election.

Trump and his team celebrated Cheney’s loss, which may represent his biggest political victory in a primary season full of them. The former president called the results “a complete rebuke” of the Jan. 6 committee.

“Liz Cheney should be ashamed of herself, the way she acted, and her spiteful, sanctimonious words and actions towards others,” he wrote on his social media platform. “Now she can finally disappear into the depths of political oblivion where, I am sure, she will be much happier than she is right now. Thank you WYOMING!”

The news offered a welcome break from Trump's focus on his&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/florida-donald-trump-mar-a-lago-merrick-garland-government-and-politics-f63c018b600e1539ff3660a896a132d0">growing legal entanglements</a>. Just eight days earlier, federal agents executing a search warrant recovered 11 sets of classified records from the former president’s Florida estate.

And in Washington, she was the No. 3 House Republican, an influential voice in GOP politics and policy with a sterling conservative voting record.

Cheney was forced to seek assistance from the state’s tiny Democratic minority in her bid to pull off a victory. But Democrats across America, major donors among them, took notice. She raised at least $15 million for her election, a stunning figure for a Wyoming political contest.

Voters responded to the interest in the race. With a little more than half of the vote counted, turnout ran about 50% higher than in the 2018 Republican primary for governor.

If Cheney does ultimately run for president — either as a Republican or an independent — don’t expect her to win Wyoming’s three electoral votes.

“We like Trump. She tried to impeach Trump,” Cheyenne voter Chester Barkell said of Cheney on Tuesday. “I don’t trust Liz Cheney.”

And in Jackson, Republican voter Dan Winder said he felt betrayed by his congresswoman.

“When you get the ideas from both sides coming together, little bit of compromise in the middle, this is what lasts beyond administrations, beyond changes in leadership,” the Republican senator said in a video posted on social media over the weekend. “This is what allows for stability and certainty. And it comes through bipartisanship.”

On the other side of the GOP's tent,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/sarah-palin">Sarah Palin</a>, the former Alaska governor and vice-presidential nominee, hopes to spark a political comeback on Tuesday.

Endorsed by Trump, she finished first among 48 candidates to qualify for a special election seeking to replace Rep. Don Young, who died in March at age 88, after 49 years as Alaska’s lone House member. Palin is actually on Tuesday's ballot twice: once in a special election to complete Young’s term and another for a full two-year House term starting in January. She's running against Republican Nick Begich and Democrat Mary Peltola in the special election and a larger field in the primary.

Back in Wyoming, Cheney’s political survival may depend upon persuading enough Democrats to cast ballots in her Republican primary election. While some Democrats have rallied behind her, it's unclear whether there are enough in the state to make a difference. Biden earned just 26% of Wyoming's vote in 2020.

Ardath Junge, of Cheyenne, said she recently changed her registration from Democratic to Republican.

“I did it just to vote for Cheney because I believe in what she’s doing,” said Junge, a retired schoolteacher.

Many Republicans in the state — and in the country — have essentially excommunicated Cheney because of her outspoken criticism of Trump. The House GOP ousted her as the No. 3 House leader last year. And more recently, the Wyoming GOP and Republican National Committee censured her.

Anti-Trump groups such as U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger's Country First PAC and the Republican Accountability Project have worked to encourage independents and Democrats to support Cheney in recent weeks. They are clearly disappointed by the expected outcome of Tuesday's election, although some are hopeful about her political future.

“What's remarkable is that in the face of almost certain defeat she’s never once wavered,” said Sarah Longwell, executive director of the Republican Accountability Project. “We’ve been watching a national American figure be forged. It’s funny how small the election feels — the Wyoming election — because she feels bigger than it now.”

Cheney has seemingly welcomed defeat by devoting almost every resource at her disposal to ending Trump’s political career since the insurrection.

She emerged as a leader in the congressional committee investigating Trump's role in the Jan. 6 attack, giving the Democrat-led panel genuine bipartisan credibility. She has also devoted the vast majority of her time to the committee instead of the campaign trail back home, a decision that still fuels murmurs of disapproval among some Wyoming allies. And she has closed out the primary campaign with an unflinching anti-Trump message.

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating&nbsp; a man for an alleged violent attack using his SUV.

Just before 11p.m. August 11,&nbsp;&nbsp;deputies responded to Club Rodeo,&nbsp;3426 E MacArthur Road in Wichita, according to Sheriff's Lt. Benjamin Blick.

Investigators learned a man in a GMC Acadia struck several vehicle, two bouncers and a woman. The woman left prior to law enforcement arriving on scene.&nbsp;

The suspect vehicle then backed up and struck a support post holding up an awning which caused it to collapse, according to Blick . 

The suspect driver then left the parking lot eastbound on MacArthur and abandoned the vehicle when the SUV was blocked by a train at Kansas 15 Highway.

According to Blick, the incident began when the suspect&nbsp; driver later identified as 42-year-old Jason Beard of Wichita had an altercation with a woman in the parking lot.

On Monday,&nbsp;&nbsp;detectives arrested Beard on requested charges of Aggravated Assault, Criminal Damage to Property and Failing to Stop at the Scene of an Injury Accident.

Nobody was seriously injured. The damages were in excess of $75,000, according to the sheriff's office.&nbsp; He is no longer in custody, according to online jail records.

Governor appoints 3 to the Kansas Board of Regents

SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting at a home in the 5200 block of E. Gilbert in Wichita have identified the victim as 49-year-old&nbsp;Dennis O. Haynes of Wichita.

Just before 8a.m. Monday, police were dispatched to a shooting in the 5200 block of East Gilbert in Wichita, according to Officer Chad Ditch. 

First responders located Haynes unconscious and not breathing. Officers began life-saving measures. EMS transported him a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The investigation revealed that the victim and several other people were inside the residence when two armed men entered and shot the Haynes. The suspects then fled the scene on foot.

Investigators do not believe this to be a random incident, according to Ditch.&nbsp; &nbsp;

But the package that won final congressional approval in the House on Friday will touch countless American lives with longtime party proposals.

Not as robust as Biden's initial ideas to&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-technology-coronavirus-pandemic-pittsburgh-jen-psaki-8865ffc8f5ad3142155a5bd3c3a3e6d3">rebuild America's public infrastructure</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/biden-preschool-community-college-tax-rate-9e352e3dea44997725edb279751abab3">family support systems,</a>&nbsp;the compromise of health care, climate change and deficit-reduction strategies is also a stunning election year turnaround, a smaller but not unsubstantial product brought back to political life after having collapsed last year.

Democrats alone supported the package, as Republicans lined up against it. Republicans deride the 730-page bill as big government overreach and point particular criticism at its&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/inflation-ap-fact-check-congress-government-and-politics-11eae023a3dc3a04584371843234cab7">$80 billion investment in the IRS</a>&nbsp;to hire new employees and go after tax scofflaws.

Voters will be left to sort it out in the November elections, when control of Congress will be decided.

Here's what's in the&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-manchin-budget-agreement-7b0ee6e3e0b70357288fd69f44473b9b">estimated $740 billion package — made up of $440 billion in new spending and $300 billion toward easing deficits</a><a href="https://apnews.com/article/senate-climate-tax-deal-vote-dbdb3107c4c5e3e0e5af8a58d56c7bc1">— that is up for final approval Friday in the House.</a>

Launching a long-sought goal, the bill would allow&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/medicare">the Medicare program</a>&nbsp;to negotiate some prescription drug prices with pharmaceutical companies, saving the federal government some $288 billion over the 10-year budget window.

The result is expected to lower costs for older adults on medications, including a $2,000 out-of-pocket cap for older adults buying prescriptions from pharmacies.

The revenue raised would also be used to provide free vaccinations for seniors, who now are among the few not guaranteed free access, according to a summary document.

Seniors would also have insulin prices capped at $35 a month.

The bill would extend the subsidies provided during&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/coronavirus-pandemic">the COVID-19 pandemic</a>&nbsp;to help some Americans who buy health insurance on their own.

Under earlier pandemic relief, the extra help was set to expire this year. But the bill would allow the assistance to keep going for three more years, lowering insurance premiums for some 13 million people who are purchasing their own health care policies through the Affordable Care Act.

BIGGEST U.S. INVESTMENT ‘BY FAR’ IN CLIMATE CHANGE

The bill would infuse nearly $375 billion over the decade in climate change-fighting strategies that Democrats believe could put the country on a path to cut greenhouse gas emissions 40% by 2030, and “would represent the single biggest climate investment in U.S. history, by far.”

For consumers, that means tax rebates to buy&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/hub/electric-vehicles">electric vehicles</a>&nbsp;— $4,000 for used vehicle purchase and up to $7,500 for new ones, eligible to households with incomes of $300,000 or less for couples, or single people with income of $150,000 or less.

<a href="https://apnews.com/article/electric-vehicles-tax-credit-cfd3d9322230446f65d629b05c2ae551">Not all electric vehicles will fully qualify for the tax credits</a>, thanks to requirements that component parts be manufactured and assembled in the U.S. And pricier cars costing more than $55,000 and SUVs and trucks priced above $80,000 are excluded.

There's also tax breaks for consumers to go green. One is a 10-year consumer tax credit for renewable energy investments in wind and solar.

For businesses, the bill has $60 billion for a clean energy manufacturing tax credit and $30 billion for a production tax credit for wind and solar, seen as ways to boost and support the industries that can help curb the country's dependence on fossil fuels.

The bill also gives tax credits for nuclear power and carbon capture technology that oil companies such as Exxon Mobil have invested millions of dollars to advance.

The bill would impose a new fee on excess methane emissions from oil and gas drilling while giving fossil fuel companies access to more leases on federal lands and waters.

A late addition pushed by Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, D-Ariz., and other Democrats in Arizona, Nevada and Colorado would designate $4 billion to combat a mega-drought in the West, including conservation efforts in the Colorado River Basin, which nearly 40 million Americans rely on for drinking water.

One of the biggest revenue-raisers in the bill is a new 15% minimum tax on corporations that earn more than $1 billion in annual profits.

It's a way to clamp down on some 200 U.S. companies that avoid paying the standard 21% corporate tax rate, including some that end up paying no taxes at all.

The new corporate minimum tax would kick in after the 2022 tax year and raise more than $258 billion over the decade.

There will also be a new 1% excise tax imposed on stock buybacks, raising some $74 billion over the decade.

Savings from allowing Medicare’s negotiations with the drug companies is expected to bring in $288 billion over 10 years, according to the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office.

The bill sticks with Biden’s original pledge not to raise taxes on families or businesses making less than $400,000 a year.

Yet money is also raised by boosting the IRS to go after tax cheats. The bill proposes an $80 billion investment in taxpayer services, enforcement and modernization, which is projected to raise $203 billion in new revenue — a net gain of $124 billion over the decade.

With some $740 billion in new revenue and around $440 billion in new investments, the bill promises to put the difference of about $300 billion toward deficit reduction.

Federal deficits spiked during the COVID-19 pandemic when federal spending soared and tax revenues fell as the nation's economy churned through shutdowns, closed offices and other massive changes.

The nation has seen deficits rise and fall in recent years. But overall federal budgeting is on an unsustainable path,&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/economy-economic-growth-government-finance-gross-domestic-product-a8e2856c81e717f922bd0bc2808a5c08">according to the Congressional Budget Office</a>, which recently put out a new report on long-term projections.

The package, nowhere near the sweeping Build Back Better program Biden once envisioned, remains a sizable undertaking and, along with COVID-19 relief and the GOP 2017 tax cuts, is among the more substantial bills from Congress in years.

While Congress did pass and Biden signed into law&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/joe-biden-congress-infrastructure-bill-signing-b5b8cca843133de060778f049861b144">a $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure bill</a>&nbsp;for highways, broadband and other investments that was part of the White House's initial vision, the Democrats' other big priorities have slipped away.

Gone, for now, are are plans for free pre-kindergarten and community college, as well as the nation's first paid family leave program that would have provided up to $4,000 a month for births, deaths and other pivotal needs. Also allowed to expire is the enhanced child care credit that was providing $300 a month during the pandemic.

WASHINGTON — Attorneys general from 
20 states and the District of Columbia filed a brief in federal court on
 Tuesday, challenging Texas’ assertion that states shouldn’t have to 
comply with a federal law that protects doctors who end a pregnancy to 
save the patient’s life.&nbsp;

The brief argues the judge in the 
case shouldn’t grant Texas’ request for preliminary injunctive relief 
that would stop the federal government from enforcing the law, or a 
pre-judgment ruling, on the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act.&nbsp;

“For decades, the federal government 
and courts throughout the country have interpreted EMTALA to require 
treatment for emergency conditions relating to pregnancy that do not 
involve active labor and have concluded that stabilizing treatment may 
include emergency abortion care when necessary to treat an emergency 
condition,” the attorneys general wrote in the 28-page<a target="_blank" href="https://storage.courtlistener.com/recap/gov.uscourts.txnd.365015/gov.uscourts.txnd.365015.43.0.pdf"> brief</a>.

The attorneys general also wrote that
 “emergency abortion care is necessary to avoid serious harmful outcomes
 (including death) in numerous situations such as when a patient 
presents with an ectopic pregnancy, severe preeclampsia, complications 
from abortion including self-induced abortion, and other medical 
conditions for which immediate medical attention is needed.”

California, Colorado, Connecticut, 
Delaware, Hawaii, Illinois, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, 
Minnesota, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, 
Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Washington, and the District of 
Columbia all signed onto the brief, filed in U.S. District Court for the
 Northern District of Texas.

The current debate between Texas and 
anti-abortion organizations, and the federal government began in July 
when U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra<a target="_blank" href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/state-bans-abortion-dont-apply-emergency-health-care-white-house-reminds-providers"> released a letter</a> reasserting that under EMTALA “no matter where you live, women have the right to emergency care — including abortion care.”&nbsp;

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton<a target="_blank" href="https://www.newsfromthestates.com/article/federal-law-protects-emergency-life-saving-abortions-challenged-texas-suit"> filed a lawsuit</a> against the Biden administration a few days later, arguing that EMTALA doesn’t guarantee access to abortion. He
 said that because the Supreme Court ruled in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s 
Health Organization that the Constitution no longer holds the right to 
abortion that EMTALA is “an unconstitutional exercise of authority and 
must be held unlawful and set aside.”

The Texas lawsuit said that the HHS 
guidance would force health care providers “to choose between violating 
state law under threat of criminal penalty or jeopardizing their ability
 to participate in” federal health care programs such as Medicare and 
Medicaid.

Paxton also wrote that the federal law violates the 1<a target="_blank" href="https://constitution.congress.gov/constitution/amendment-10/">0th Amendment</a>, which says that any powers not given to the federal government by the Constitution fall to the states and the people.

The brief filed by the 20 states and 
the District of Columbia on Tuesday urges the federal judge in the case 
not to grant Texas’ request for a preliminary injunction.&nbsp;

The attorneys general wrote that they
 have a substantial interest in the case because the states themselves 
are health care providers for millions of people as well as regulators 
of health care.&nbsp;

They argued that their states have a 
“strong interest in protecting the rights of their residents who may 
need emergency medical care while present as students, workers, or 
visitors in Texas and other States that may attempt to prohibit 
emergency abortion care contrary to EMTALA’s requirements.”

They also wrote that “if patients in 
Texas are denied necessary emergency abortion care, they may travel to 
nearby States (including amici New Mexico and Colorado) to receive the 
emergency care they need.”

“These States would thus experience 
additional pressures on their already overwhelmed hospital systems, 
especially in rural and underserved areas that would be most 
significantly affected,” they wrote.&nbsp;

The states sought to highlight the 
wide-ranging impact that blocking EMTALA protections for abortion would 
have for patients who need a pregnancy ended to avoid severe health 
complications or death.&nbsp;

The brief noted that “doctors in 
Texas reported postponing care ‘until a patient’s health or pregnancy 
complication has deteriorated to the point that their life was in 
danger, including multiple cases where patients were sent home, only to 
return once they were in sepsis.’”

“As another example, a physician at 
an academic medical center described how a hospital asked her to accept a
 patient ‘who was already septic’ after the transferring hospital, on 
conscience-refusal grounds, refused to perform the abortion needed to 
save the patient’s life, instead transferring the patient in an unstable
 state because the fetus had cardiac activity,” the brief states. “The 
physician who treated the patient after the transfer reported the 
transferring hospital for violating EMTALA.”

The states wrote that if Texas, or 
other states with severe abortion restrictions, didn’t have to comply 
with EMTALA, it would have a significant impact on health care providers
 in nearby states.&nbsp;

“Emergency rooms in New Mexico and 
Colorado and other neighboring states will inevitably need to absorb the
 out-of-state patient need for care that Texas’s law will cause, at a 
time when the states continue to wrestle with an ongoing global pandemic

20 states, D.C. join in opposing Texas suit on emergency abortion care

WASHINGTON (AP) — Millions of Americans will be able to buy hearing aids without a prescription later this fall, under a long-awaited rule finalized Tuesday.

The Food and Drug Administration said the new regulation cuts red tape by creating a new class of hearing aids that don't require a medical exam, a prescription and other specialty evaluations. The devices will be sold online or over-the-counter at pharmacies and other retail stores.

The devices are intended for adults with mild to moderate hearing problems. The FDA estimates that nearly 30 million adults could potentially benefit from hearing aids, but only about one-fifth of people with hearing problems use the devices currently.

“Today’s action by the FDA represents a significant milestone in making hearing aids more cost-effective and accessible,” Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, told reporters Tuesday.

The FDA first&nbsp;<a href="https://apnews.com/article/science-business-health-0908cbc7cfc2ee95cbc507128d5688eb">proposed the rule</a>&nbsp;last year and it will take effect in mid-October. The move follows years of pressure from medical experts and consumer advocates to make the devices cheaper and easier to get.

Cost is a big obstacle now. Americans can pay more than $5,000 for a hearing aid, between the device itself and fitting services. Insurance coverage is limited and Medicare doesn’t pay for hearing aids, only diagnostic tests.

“The requirement to see a specialist was not only a burden and an annoyance for many consumers but it actually created a competitive barrier to entry,” said Brian Deese, a White House economics adviser.

Deese cited government estimates that Americans could eventually save as much as $2,800 per pair. But FDA officials cautioned against predicting the size of savings or how quickly they might arrive, noting much will depend on when manufacturers launch products and how they price them.

“It’s very hard to predict exactly what we’ll see and when," said Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, the FDA's medical device chief.

Shuren said officials expect to see increased competition from new manufacturers as well as new products from existing hearing aid makers.

The new over-the-counter status won't apply to devices for more severe hearing loss, which will remain prescription only.

Consumer electronic companies for years have produced lower-cost “personal sound amplification” devices, but they do not undergo FDA review and U.S. regulations bar them from being marketed as hearing aids. The new rule makes explicit that those devices are not alternatives to FDA-vetted hearing aids.

The FDA said it changed several parts of its initial proposal in response to public comments, including clarifying how the rule will impact state regulations.

Tuesday’s announcement follows prodding from medical committees and Congress, which in 2017 instructed the agency to lay out a plan for over-the-counter hearing devices.

Over-the-counter hearing aids expected this fall in US

TOPEKA — State Sen. Caryn Tyson on Monday dramatically scaled back her request to recount votes for the GOP nomination for state treasurer, targeting just six counties for a review of ballots by hand.

State Rep. Steven Johnson led Tyson by 452 votes as of 5 p.m. Monday with 102 out of 105 counties having certified their results, the Secretary of State’s Office said. There were 836 provisional ballots left to be reviewed.

Jonson, from Assaria, said he hoped to learn the final numbers late Monday and begin work on the general election campaign.

“We’ll hit the ground running as soon as we’re able to take that step and make sure the nominee is clear,” Johnson said.

Tyson had requested a hand recount of ballots in 55 rural counties, which would have cost an estimated $46,000. On Monday, she narrowed her request to a full recount in Cloud, Harvey, McPherson and Ottawa counties, as well as a hand recount of advanced in Dickinson and Barton Counties and the city of Great Bend.

The Secretary of State’s Office said Tyson posted a bond of $2,570.54 and that counties could begin their hand recount. Tyson didn’t immediately respond to a call Monday seeking comment on the status of the race.

Monday was the deadline for counties to canvass and certify results in the Aug. 2 election. Johnson, Sedgwick and Shawnee counties were among those that canvassed Monday, a process the includes the review of provisional ballots. Johnson leads by a vote count of 219,363 to 218,911.

On Saturday, the Secretary of State’s Office said 74 of the 105 counties had certified election results as of 5 p.m. Friday. At that time, Johnson led Tyson by 324 votes.

If Johnson’s lead holds, he will face Democratic state Treasurer Lynn Rogers in the general election. Gov. Laura Kelly appointed Rogers, formerly her lieutenant governor, to fill the vacant office in January 2021.

“We’re moving full steam ahead as the nominee for the Democratic Party,” Rogers said in a phone interview. “We’re excited that we can be talking to people and visiting with people. We do get the question of who I’m running against. I guess we’ll wait to see.”

Caryn Tyson on Monday dramatically scaled back her request to recount votes for the GOP nomination for state treasurer, targeting just six counties for a review of ballots by hand.State Rep. Steven Johnson led Tyson by 452 votes as of 5 p.m. Monday with 102 out of 105 counties having certified their results, the Secretary of State’s Office said. There were 836 provisional ballots left to be reviewed.Jonson, from Assaria, said he hoped to learn the final numbers late Monday and begin work on the general election campaign.“We’ll hit the ground running as soon as we’re able to take that step and make sure the nominee is clear,” Johnson said.Tyson had requested a hand recount of ballots in 55 rural counties, which would have cost an estimated $46,000. On Monday, she narrowed her request to a full recount in Cloud, Harvey, McPherson and Ottawa counties, as well as a hand recount of advanced in Dickinson and Barton Counties and the city of Great Bend.The Secretary of State’s Office said Tyson posted a bond of $2,570.54 and that counties could begin their hand recount. Tyson didn’t immediately respond to a call Monday seeking comment on the status of the race.Monday was the deadline for counties to canvass and certify results in the Aug. 2 election. Johnson, Sedgwick and Shawnee counties were among those that canvassed Monday, a process the includes the review of provisional ballots. Johnson leads by a vote count of 219,363 to 218,911.On Saturday, the Secretary of State’s Office said 74 of the 105 counties had certified election results as of 5 p.m. Friday. At that time, Johnson led Tyson by 324 votes.If Johnson’s lead holds, he will face Democratic state Treasurer Lynn Rogers in the general election. Gov. Laura Kelly appointed Rogers, formerly her lieutenant governor, to fill the vacant office in January 2021.“We’re moving full steam ahead as the nominee for the Democratic Party,” Rogers said in a phone interview. “We’re excited that we can be talking to people and visiting with people. We do get the question of who I’m running against. I guess we’ll wait to see.”

Tyson scales back recount request in GOP race for Kansas Treasurer

OSAGE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on drug charges after a traffic stop.

Just after noon Monday a Sheriff’s K9 unit conducted a traffic stop at Casey’s in Lyndon for an alleged traffic violation, according to Sheriff Chris Wells.

During the stop, the deputy found illegal narcotics.

The driver of the vehicle, Charles A. Ysusi, 50, of Chanute, was taken into custody and transported to the Osage County Jail Facility on requested charges of Possession of methamphetamine and Possession of drug paraphernalia.

Drug arrest made at Kan. convenience store traffic stop

ELLSWORTH COUNTY—Ellsworth County Sheriff's Deputy Jerry Slaught&nbsp; injured&nbsp; by a bison August 7 was discharged from Salina Regional Medical Center and is recovering, according to Sheriff Murray Marston.

Slaught reported he located the bison just South of Kansas 4 Highway. When he exited the vehicle to find a pasture gate, the animal had not seen him, yet.

When the bison did see him, according to Slaught, the animal charged so fast he was unable to return to the patrol car in time.

The bison struck Slaught in the chest, knocking him to the ground. Slaught was able to get to his feet and the animal charged a second time, goring him in the left thigh and tossed him 10-12 feet in the air.

A Rice County deputy arrived at the scene just as the attack occurred and put the animal down as it appeared it would charge Slaught again, according to Marston.

Following Slaught's encounter, 56-year-old Scott Schroeder of rural Bushton, was found dead in a nearby pen and it is believed a bison killed him, according to Marston.

Schroeder's body was in a row of trees north of Kansas 4 highway at 5th Road near where Slaught was injured by a bison a few hours earlier. Schroeder was the owner of over 20 buffalo kept at that location, according to Marston.

Kan. deputy recounts his near death experience with a bison

SUMNER COUNTY—A fire in southern Kansas Monday destroyed approximately 120 acres of no-till soybeans.

On Monday afternoon, Mulvane Fire Rescue and Wellington Fire/EMS both sent units to assist with what started as a car fire.&nbsp; Wheat stubble mixed in with the soybeans and carried this fire rapidly across the field and into two neighboring fields, catching two hedge rows on fire. 

 The outside temperatures was around 100 degrees with 10-15 mph south winds contributed to the fast movement of the fire. 

Farmers assisted with a tractor, mower and a 3,000 gallon water tank. 

 No injuries were reported with this fire which took about two hours to control. Mulvane EMS assisted with firefighter rehab.
