HALSEY, Neb.-Campers and visitors to the Halsey National Forest and residents in the village of Halsey have been evacuated after a wildfire broke out Sunday afternoon.

Officials said the fire started in the Bessey Ranger District and began spreading rapidly.  The fire, which has been named the Bovee Fire, was likely human-caused, according to officials.

As of Sunday evening, the fire was estimated to be about 15,000 acres and was still burning and moving rapidly.

Multiple air tankers have been dispatched to the area. The South Dakota Wildland Fire District and the Black Hills National Forest Fire Department sent personnel and equipment to assist. The fire forced the closure of Highway 2 between Thedford and Dunning in west central Nebraska.
