Sex offender charged with wife's murder in Kansas

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A Kansas man accused in his wife's murder made his first court appearance on Monday.

Craig Johnston, 43 of Sedgwick, is charged with 1st degree murder, rape, aggravated criminal sodomy, and aggravated sexual battery, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

Just after 9:00 a.m. Oct. 30, deputies were sent to 7910 E 109th Street North in rural Sedgwick County to assist EMS, according to Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Lt. Benjamin Blick.

When they arrived they found 40-year-old Amber Dawn Slankard with critical injuries.

EMS transported her to Via Christi St. Francis and she later died of her injuries.

The victim’s husband Craig Johnston, 42, was transported to Sheriff Investigations and later booked on requested charges of Second Degree Murder and violations of the Offender Registration Act, according to Blick. 

Johnston has a previous conviction from Illinois in 1997 for aggravated criminal sexual abuse of a victim between the age of 13-16, according to the Offender Registry.

He remains jailed on a $100,000 bond, according to the district attorney.
