Homicide arrest: Kan. couple preparing for bed shot in their home

SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement investigating a deadly shooting into a Kansas home have captured a suspect. 

On Friday, police reported the arrest of 18-year-old Sergio Rodolfo Vargas, according to jail booking records, for the crime.

Just after 11p.m. Nov. 6, police  responded to a reported shooting in the 2300 block of Mascot in Wichita, according to police spokesman Andrew Ford.

First responders found two victims a 49-year-old man and a 48-year-old woman identified as Deanna Garcia.

The male victim reported hearing several gunshots outside their residence as they prepared for bed. The male victim sustained a gunshot wound to his lower left leg and was transported to a local hospital by Sedgwick County EMS with non-life-threatening injuries. 

Garcia sustained critical injuries from a gunshot wound to her upper body. She was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced deceased at 11:54 p.m. by medical staff, according to Ford. 

Vargas was booked into the Sedgwick County Jail on requested charges of felony murder, discharge into an occupied dwelling, and aggravated battery.
