Kan. teen driving stolen car jailed after crash, hospital visit

SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating a teen suspect after a chase and crash.

Just before 2p.m. Wednesday, a citizen contact the Shawnee County Emergency Communication's Center after observing what they believed was a suspect in a stolen vehicle in the area of SW 21st and SW Wanamaker Road, according to Lt. Edward Stanley.

An officer in the area responded and conducted a traffic stop on the vehicle near SW 29th. The driver later identified as 18-year-old Frank Z. Ward failed to stop and fled.

A short time later Ward crashed the vehicle into an occupied apartment building at 5820 SW Candletree Drive, according to Stanley. After a brief foot-pursuit,  police arrested Ward.

AMR transported Ward to a hospital for treatment. He was later booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of felony possession of stolen property, flee and elude, interference with law enforcement, possession of drug paraphernalia and marijuana and reckless driving.

The occupants of the apartment were not injured, according to Stanley.
