SHAWNEE COUNTY —The strong winds that rolled across Kansas are being blamed for a house fire in Topeka.

Just before 12:30a.m. Monday, fire crews responded to the report of fire at a home at 3409 SW Westport Drive in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.

Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke coming from the basement of a two-story wood home. After further investigation, it was determined that, a tree had fallen on the electrical box on the backside of the house.

Preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire as natural, associated with wind. The estimated dollar loss was $15,000; of which $10,000 is associated with structural loss and $5,000 is associated with content loss, according to Harrison.

Working smoke detectors were located within the home. There were no injuries.
