SHAWNEE COUNTY —One person was critically injured in a Kansas house fire on Sunday evening.
Just after 8:30p.m., a fire was discovered to a home at 1228 NE Forest Avenue in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.
As fire crews arrived, they found light smoke coming from the home. A primary search revealed one occupant who sustained life threatening injuries. The victim was rescued from the house and transported in critical condition to a local hospital. The fire was extinguished and kept confined to the room of fire origin.
A preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire as accidental, more likely than not associated with improper disposal of smoking materials, according to Harrison.
The estimated dollar loss – $600.00; of which $500.00 is associated with structural loss and $100.00 is associated with contents loss.
Investigators did not find working smoke detectors in the home, according to Harrison.
