KANSAS CITY—Law enforcement are investigating the death of an inmate in Jackson County, Missouri.
Just after 11p.m. on Thursday, inmates within the Jackson County Detention Center (JCDC) at 7000 E. US Highway 40 notified corrections officers an inmate needed help, according to Sheriff Daryl Forte's office.
Corrections officers immediately responded to find an inmate in his cell having what appeared to be a medical emergency.
Kansas City Fire Department was requested, and the inmate was transported to a local hospital. After initial treatment, the inmate was placed on life support and ultimately pronounced dead on Saturday just after 11:30 a.m.
The inmate, a 42-year-old male from Lee’s Summit, MO, was booked into the detention center late Tuesday, July 14, 2026. His name is currently being withheld pending notification to his next of kin.
Sheriff Darryl Forté said, “Any loss of life in our custody is a matter we take with the utmost seriousness, and I extend my condolences to the individual’s family. Our focus remains on supporting the investigative process and ensuring a complete review of the incident.”
Preliminary investigation shows the inmate had no contact with other inmates or staff prior to the medical emergency, and there are no signs of foul play. However, Sheriff’s Office detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death.
The cause and manner of the inmate’s death remain under investigation by the Jackson County Medical Examiner’s Office, which has not yet issued its official report.
