DOUGLAS COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an alleged kidnapping and have a suspect in custody.

Just before 9:00 a.m. Thursday, police responded to the 2500 block of West 6th Street in Lawrence to what was initially described as a disturbance with weapons, according to police spokesperson Patrick Compton.

While en route to the scene, officers received information that a woman was being held against her will by a male suspect carrying a firearm.

The victim, who was known to the suspect, was located unharmed at the scene.

Police arrested the suspect identified as 36-year-old Michael James Edwards, on suspicion of kidnapping and criminal possession of a weapon by a felon.  Edwards has previous convictions for criminal threat and aggravated battery, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.
