SHAWNEE COUNTY —Authorities are investigating the cause of a fire that temporarily shut down the Sardou Bridge, which spans the Kansas River in Topeka.

Just before 2a.m. Monday, crews responded to the report of an unknown type of fire located at 1400 NW Sardou Avenue, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.

Upon arrival crews found fire coming from beneath the east end of the bridge. A large pile of wood and debris was located adjacent to the base of Pier #9, according to Harrison. Firefighters began an offensive fire attack, containing the fire to the debris.

The Topeka Police Department was dispatched to the scene and provided traffic control. It was determined by Incident Command, under an abundance of caution, to have the Topeka Police Department temporarily limit access to the bridge, until public works was able to evaluate the bridges condition.  Officials reopened the bridge to traffic late Monday morning.

There were no injuries reported.
