SEDGWICK COUNTY — The Sedgwick County Board of Commissioners held a special meeting Tuesday afternoon on COVID-19.

County health officer Dr. Garold Minns said he was concerned with coronavirus numbers climbing at "an alarming rate."

Although he realizes the importance of maintaining the economy, Minns issued a new local health order that limits the size of gatherings to 100 and establishes an 11 p.m. curfew for bars and restaurants that sell alcohol.

The state health department on Monday added 5,920 new confirmed and probable cases to the state’s tally since Friday, bringing the total to 103,553 since the pandemic began.

The state averaged 2,047 new cases a day for the seven days ending Monday. Democratic Gov. Laura Kelly’s staff, legislative leaders and local officials have launched discussions about encouraging mask use. There's still resistance to mask mandates from many local officials and the Republican-controlled Legislature.
