Big Red One pays homage to Medal of Honor recipients

Big Red One Year of Honor events continue at Fort Riley Wednesday with the theme, "Victory: Building winning teams."

The day begins with a 9:30 a.m. commemoration ceremony at Victory Park honoring Pvt. Sterling Morelock, 28th Infantry; Sgt. Michael B. Ellis, Company C, 28th Infantry; Capt. Bobbie E. Brown, Company C, 18th Infantry; Pvt. Wilbur E. Colyer, Company A, 1st Engineers; Sgt. Max Thompson, Company K, 18th Infantry; and 2nd Lt. Harold B. Durham, Battery C, 6th Battalion, 15th Artillery for their conspicuous gallantry and bravery at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty which earned them the Medal of Honor.

Maj. Gen. D.A. Sims, 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley commanding general, will speak at the ceremony, highlighting their bravery and perseverance as examples for today’s U.S. Army men and women.

Following the ceremony, Fort Riley will host a Leader Professional Development panel with four distinguished guests to provide important insights from their careers and perspectives that enhance the Fighting First team. The panelists include Kirstie Ennis, USMC Sgt. (Ret.); Kelly Cagle, Phoenix Rising Football Club and former collegiate soccer coach (virtual); Randall Zimmerman, head football coach, Junction City High School; and Bob Kendrick, president of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

In the afternoon, Fort Riley will unveil new street signs in honor of the October Medal of Honor recipients.

The Big Red One Year of Honor is a year-long observance of the 37 service members who earned the Medal of Honor while serving with the 1st Infantry Division. By extension, the campaign will enhance esprit-de-corps, foster leader development, and increase unit morale and cohesion through authentic examples of virtue, leadership, and living a life of honor.
