Central Mall
Effective immediately the following conditions should be met to ensure the safety of all tenants, staff, and patrons of the Salina Mall following damage from last week's storm.
- Exterior doors should be closed and locked with access limited to licensed asbestos inspectors until the results of the analysis are known
o No entry permitted to anyone without a valid asbestos inspector license
- All work on the roof and any interior drying efforts should cease and workers vacate the building until asbestos test results are known
- Businesses with exterior doors that wish to remain open must meet the following
o Seal the opening to the mall interior according to asbestos control standards
▪ Two layers of 6-mil thick poly from ceiling to floor and wall to wall, secured with duct tape to form an airtight barrier
o Certify that they are not sharing air with the mall interior
▪ Provide to KDHE evidence of separate HVAC system
- Businesses with no exterior access shall remail closed until the mall has been deemed safe to enter
o From the KDHE asbestos compliance perspective, that entails “clean” air sampling, showing >1% airborne asbestos fibers
Once the test results have come back, those will inform next steps, until we know confidently that there is not an asbestos hazard present, you must behave as it there is.
If the test comes back showing no asbestos-containing materials, businesses can then reopen and/or perform the mold and water damage remediation that needs to take place.
If the test does show the presence of asbestos-containing material, that will have to be abated by a licensed firm before the water damage can be addressed.
