Police ID armed robbery suspect who died in Kan. officer shooting

JOHNSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting have identified the suspect who died as 43-year-old Brett Smiley, according to Shawnee Police.

Just after 11a.m. Sunday, police were notified of a rolling disturbance with shots fired from a truck along Kansas 7, according to Shawnee, Kansas Police.

Subsequently, Shawnee police responded to a robbery in progress call at a QuikTrip in the 20600 block of Shawnee Mission Parkway. Officers were informed of shots being fired inside the business. Officers engaged an armed subject later identified as Smiley at the door.  EMS transported Smiley  to the hospital in critical condition.  Late Sunday police reported the he died of his injuries..

No citizens or officers were injured.  The Johnson County Officer-Involved Critical Incident Investigation Team is now in charge of the investigation.
