BARTON COUNTY —One person died in an accident just before 9p.m. Wednesday in Barton County.
A 2016 Ford Fusion driven by Mark DeWald, 72, of Great Bend was eastbound on K-96 highway three miles northwest of Great Bend, according to the Barton County Sheriff's office.
The car crossed left of center and struck a 2007 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup driven by Luke Krehbiel, 17, of Timken, head-on. After impact, the Dodge truck initially caught fire but was quickly extinguished by the Great Bend Fire Department.
The Barton County Coroner's Office pronounced DeWald dead at the scene Krehbiel was transported to the hospital in Great Bend for treatment of minor injuries.
The Sheriff's Office suspects Dewald may have had a medical incident prior to the collision causing him to cross the center line. The accident is still under investigation.
