SW Kansas couple accused of murder in Colorado

FINNEY COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas man and woman in connection with the murder of a Colorado man on May 14, according to a media release from the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.

Matthew Perez, 39, Garden City is being held on a requested charge of First Degree Murder and Nikki Olivas, 32, Garden City faces a charge of Accessory to First Degree Murder in connection to the murder of 49-year-old Ernesto Apodaca.

He was shot inside of his vehicle parked in front of his apartment building located in the 600 block of Sunrise Avenue in the Morningside Heights  neighborhood of La Junta, Colorado on Friday evening.

Officers arrested Perez and Olivas in rural Finney County, Kansas without incident. Authorities also located the suspect vehicle.

Perez and Olivas are currently being held without bond in the Finney County Sheriff’s Office Detention Facility pending extradition to Otero County. 

It’s believed Apodaca and Perez are known to one another; however, the circumstances surrounding the shooting are part of the active investigation.
