McPHERSON, Kan. — The McPherson High School boys soccer team returned to the field Monday for its first game since the deadly crash at Stryker Sports Complex, bringing together a community grieving alongside the team.
The Bullpups’ coach is the father of Cole Adrian, the 6-year-old boy killed in the crash.
Players, parents and staff chose to continue the season following the tragedy, according to a post on McPherson High School’s Facebook page. The team’s return drew support from local residents and others who traveled to stand with the affected families.
The school announced that community generosity raised $13,403.98. The money will be donated to the McPherson County Community Foundation’s Disaster Relief Fund to support families impacted by the tragedy.
“Thank you McPherson Community and everyone who traveled to show support for those affected by the Stryker tragedy,” the school said in its post.
In announcing the team’s final home game, the school encouraged fans to wear red in support of the soccer community. All gate proceeds and donations were designated to benefit impacted families.
