Kan. Dept. of Labor delays start of new $400 jobless benefit

TOPEKA —President Trump issued an executive memorandum Saturday hoping to restart the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation program at a rate of $400 per week, instead of the previous $600 amount.

However, the memorandum is broad and there are concerns around its legality, according to a statement from the Kansas Department of Labor.

The agency is waiting on additional guidance from  federal partners, in order to evaluate if this temporary program extension is possible.

"We know Kansans are hurting and we want to provide as much certainty as possible to families during this difficult time. The only way to ensure that certainty is for Congress to act by passing a permanent, bipartisan solution that states can implement."

In addition, the National Governor's Association on Monday said that while they appreciate the White House’s proposals to provide additional solutions to address economic challenges,  "we are concerned about the significant administrative burdens and costs this latest action would place on the states."

“The best way forward is for the Congress and the Administration to get back to the negotiating table and come up with a workable solution, which should provide meaningful additional relief for American families."
