JOHNSON COUNTY—The vehicle recovered from a retention pond in the 14700 block of Norwood in Leawood on Saturday was confirmed to be the vehicle reported to be driven by Jay Flekier, who was reported missing by his family in June 2016.
Mr. Flekier was 59 when he was reported as missing from his south Leawood residence. An investigation was opened and no foul play was suspected in Mr. Flekier’s disappearance.
The Johnson County Medical Examiner’s Office has confirmed skeletal remains were located inside the vehicle following its recovery and are working to make an identification.
A volunteer dive team using a GIS satellite image, deployed sonar equipment to search the pond. A diver descended to investigate a large metal object detected by sonar and discovered a car with a license plate that matched a vehicle connected to the missing person case.
With help from the Overland Park Police Department’s dive team, a tow truck successfully removed the vehicle from the pond.
