Sheriff: 2 arrested for alleged theft of 40 guns from Kan. home

SALINE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a home burglary that involved more than 40 guns and have two suspects in custody.

For almost five months, detectives interviewed dozens of people and followed up on numerous tips and leads concerning a July 24 residential burglary in the 100 block of South Third Street in Smolan, according to Saline County Sheriff's Lieutenant Michael Ascher.

During the burglary, more than 30 rifles and shotguns, at least a dozen handguns, and approximately $500 worth of $2 bills were stolen.

On Tuesday, Saline County Sheriff's Office investigators arrested Joshua Mudd, 29, of Smolan, on requested charges of Burglary with intent to steal a firearm, Felony theft, Possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, Aggravated child endangerment,Contributing to a child’s misconduct and Criminal damage to property, according to Ascher.

On Wednesday, a deputy arrested Kylee Smith, 33, of Smolan, on requested charges that include Burglary with intent to steal a firearm, Felony theft, Aggravated child endangerment and Contributing to a child’s misconduct.

Deputies have recovered several firearms. However, more than 30 guns are still on the streets.
