Brad Scholz is being recommended by the First District members of the Republican Party Central Committee to serve as the new First District member of the Geary County Commission. The recommendation now goes to the Governor for approval. If she does not take action within seven days, Scholz will automatically become a member of the commission.
Scholz was the choice of the delegates in a 7-6 vote over Rick Roberts. They were the only two candidates nominated by the precinct committee members.
Scholz will fill the vacancy created by the death of Commissioner R. Ben Bennett. Scholz noted that following Bennett will be humbling. "Those are huge shoes to fill and that's humbling in and of itself. This is a guy that dedicated literally his entire life to Junction City."
Scholz explained that on the commission he'll focus on the budget. "Cooperation with the city is huge also. There has to be some give and take so everyone gets along so it does benefit all of Geary County."
Scholz said he will resign from his seat on the Geary Community Hospital Board of Trustees. He was appointed to that post approximately three months ago by the Geary County Commission.
Roberts, who chairs the county's Republican Central Committee, noted that holding a convention of this sort twice in an eight month period was "kind of extraordinary. It was close and I wish Brad all the best." Just a few months ago a nominating convention led to the appointment of Daniel Jackson to the post of Geary County Sheriff.
