Kansas man jailed after fleeing crash into motorcycle

SALINE COUNTY — A Kansas man is facing charges for a weekend accident that injured a motorcycle rider.

Just before 10:30p.m. Saturday, a 2013 Kawasaki motorcycle driven by Landon Howard, 19, Brookville, was stopped at the light at the intersection of West Iron Ave. and 9th Street in Salina, according to Salina Police Captain Paul Forrester,

An eastbound 2005 Chevrolet Uplander driven by Robert Pirtle, 69, of Salina, struck the motorcycle.

Pirtle then fled the scene of the accident. A witness gave police a description of the vehicle.

EMS transported Howard to Salina Regional Health Center with a deep laceration and two fractures on his right leg, according to Forrester.

A short time later, a Saline County Sheriff's deputy spotted the Uplander at the intersection of West Ash Street and Broadway Boulevard and conducted a traffic stop for a  DUI test on Pirtle. 

Deputies arrested him on requested charges of Aggravated battery, Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, Duty to give information and render aid, Driving while suspended, Improper driving on a laned roadway and No proof of insurance.

The motorcycle was destroyed and the Uplander had extensive front driver's side damage, according to Forrester.
