
SHAWNEE COUNTY— Law enforcement authorities are investigating two suspects on car theft charges after a chase and crash.
Just after midnight Monday, a Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted a traffic stop near SE 27th Street and Adams Street for a traffic infraction, according to Sgt. Todd Stallbaumer.
A 2000 Chevy Silverado, reported stolen out of Topeka, failed to stop and a pursuit ensued. The Silverado drove through the Hi-Crest neighborhood, east on SE 37th Street, and north on SE California Avenue. The driver lost control of the vehicle near SE 30th Street and California Avenue and struck a fire hydrant. Two occupants fled the scene but were located a short time later.
Deputies booked the driver of the stolen vehicle, Shaquan R. Mitchell, 18, of Topeka into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on requested charges of Aggravated endangering of a child, Felony flee and elude, Possession of stolen property, Leaving the scene of an accident, No driver’s license and Other traffic infractions.
A 17-year-old passenger was arrested and transported to Juvenile Detention.
