LYON COUNTY —Several children suffered minor injuries when a school bus rolled onto its side near Emporia on Wednesday morning, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

Patrol Lt. Dave Hundley say 36 students, two teachers, a chaperone and the driver were on the bus when it went into a ditch off a slushy Kansas Turnpike about 14 miles south of Emporia.

Seventeen children were taken to Newman Regional Health for minor injuries. Some were taken to Emporia High School, who graciously cared for the students, according to Lyon County Sgt. Jacob Welsh.

The bus was carrying students from Park Elementary School in Wichita. The  students were on their way to a Topeka for a field trip.
