KBI conducting death investigation of Junction City police dept. employee

UPDATE:

The suicide involving a Junction City Police Department employee on Tuesday was one topic at the city commission meeting Tuesday evening.

Mayor Jeff Underhill extended the City's thoughts and prayers to the police department and the families involved. "We're thinking of everybody there so please lift those people up and keep them in your thoughts."

Police Chief John Lamb stated, "Thank you for your prayers, thoughts. On behalf of the Junction City Police Department we just ask that you keep praying for the employees and the family members as we go through these times."

GEARY COUNTY – The Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) is investigating the death of a Junction City Police Department employee after an incident occurred Tuesday morning in the police department’s parking lot, according to a media release from the agency.

The Junction City Police Department requested KBI assistance at approximately 9:25 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 18, to investigate the circumstances of the man’s death. KBI agents and the Crime Scene Response Team (CSRT) responded.

At around 9:10 a.m., a Junction City police officer exited the police department and discovered a 58-year-old civilian employee who had suffered a fatal gunshot wound. At this time, there is no evidence that a crime occurred, but a full investigation is being conducted. No threat to the public exists related to this incident.

The employee will be identified once all next of kin have been notified. The investigation is ongoing. No further information will be released at this time.

JC Post has learned through a check with the city manager's office that Junction City police are investigating a suicide that occurred Tuesday morning outside the JCPD building. The KBI has been called in to help with the investigation. Police are not commenting at this time.

Crime tape is up outside the PD building and an ambulance responded to the scene. As more details become available we will pass them along on JC Post.
