TOPEKA, KAN. (AP) — A 51-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in the death of a man who was run over earlier this week near a Topeka hiking trail.
Chad Thomas Cuevas was charged Thursday and is being held on a $1 million bond, District Attorney Mike Kagay announced.
Emerson D. Downing, 41, of Topeka, was struck and killed Monday near the Soldier Trail in north Topeka.
Police Lt. Manny Munoz heard an argument near the trail and then saw a vehicle run over Downing and flee the scene, WIBW reported. Downing died at a Topeka hospital.
Police arrested Cuevas a short time after the incident.
Cuevas has a criminal history including making a terroristic threat, driving under the influence of alcohol, and criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
