Update: Kan. teen arrested for kidnapping, murder

SHAWNEE COUNTY — Law enforcement authorities are investigating a fatal shooting in Topeka and have made an arrest.

Just before 1:30 a.m. Friday, the Shawnee County Emergency Communications Center began receiving reports of an individual that had been shot in the 1200 block of SW Washburn in Topeka, according to police Lt. Kelvin Johnson.

Upon arrival, officers located a victim identified as 19-year-old Ja’Sean Alston Topeka, in a vehicle suffering from life-threatening injuries.

EMS transported the Alston to a local hospital where he died. 

Just after 2p.. Monday, police arrested 18-year-old Dmario M. Valdivia of Topeka on requested charges of 1st Degree Murder, Aggravated Kidnapping and Aggravated Robbery, according to police spokesperson Gretchen Koenen. No formal charges have been filed, and it wasn't immediately clear if Valdivia had an attorney.

It is the city’s second homicide of 2020.

EMS transported the man to a local hospital where he died. Police have not released the victim's name.  Police expected to have streets closed in the area until midday during the investigation.

It is the city’s second homicide of 2020.
