SHAWNEE COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after a traffic stop.
Just after 1:30a.m. Thursday, a Shawnee County Sheriff’s Office deputy stopped a vehicle near NE K4 Highway and Seward Avenue, according to Deputy Abigail Christian.
A passenger identified as Maleek Lashann Hughes, 43, of Topeka, ran from the vehicle after being told he had multiple warrants for his arrest.
Hughes was taken into custody by sheriff’s deputies in a nearby field. A Sheriff’s Office K9 located the stolen firearm that was reported through the City of Topeka Police Department, according to Christian.
Hughes was arrested for two misdemeanor warrants and was charged with felony interference with law enforcement and criminal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. He is being held in the Shawnee County Department of Corrections.
