The 75 acres leased by the Geary County Fish & Game Association from the Corps of Engineers has become somewhat overgrown with cedars where they are beginning to crowd out growth. Now there is an effort forming to undertake habitat restoration.

According to the Association's news letter Board member Ray McDonald has been heading the effort to create a committee to develop long term plans for the restoration of habitat and improvement of land use at Sportsman's Acres. While the range complex is used a lot there is potential for other outdoor activities such as hiking trails, wildlife food plots, butterfly gardens, shoreline fishing, picnic areas, nest boxes, wildflower plots, pond or wetland areas, and improved 3-D archery trails.

Planning is ready to proceeds so if you would like to work on the committee call Ray McDonald at 319-610-0938.

The Association also reported that others have been clearing and thinning cedars in select areas near the pond and along the roadway to the ranges, burning brush piles and killing the poison ivy undergrowth. They have also some restoration in the areas near the pistol and archery ranges.
