Big thunderstorm sweeps through the region

Heavy rain, some hail and strong winds covered the Geary, Riley, Dickinson County area during the early morning hours Thursday. A major storm cell that eventually stretched from Iowa through southeast Nebraska into central Kansas swept through the region at 55 to 60 miles per hour.

Checks with police dispatch in Manhattan and Junction City, plus Geary County Emergency Management revealed no serious problems with damage.

The strongest activity for the Junction City - Manhattan area began just before midnight and continued on into the early morning hours. Multiple severe thunderstorm warnings were issued for the region from Dickinson County on the west to western Shawnee County. Geary, Riley, Pottawatomie, Clay, Dickinson and Wabaunsee counties were all under severe thunderstorm warnings for a period.
