Sheriff K9 helps locate nearly $2M in cash during traffic stop

SEWARD COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a suspect on federal charges after a traffic stop.

Just after 9:30a.m. Wednesday, a sheriff's deputy a Chevy Silverado pickup with Ohio license plates for failure to signal a lane change on Interstate 80 in Seward County, NE., according to Sheriff Michael Vance.

The sheriff was concerned the driver was involved in criminal activity and requested consent to search the vehicle. The sheriff deployed K9 Igor and ultimately located and seized nearly $2 million in cash in duffel bags in the back of the truck.

Deputies then arrested the driver 42-year-old Michael T. Gayton of Toledo, Ohio, on requested charges of felony transportation and possession of illegal currency used to facilitate the purchase of illegal drugs and money laundering. Agents from the Department of Homeland Security also assisted with the arrest.
