Man dies after head-on crash with semi in Kansas

CHEROKEE COUNTY —One person died in an accident just before 2a.m. Friday in Cherokee County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer driven by Gage Thomas Phelps, 41, Joplin, was eastbound on U.S. 166 one mile east of U.S. 400.

The Chevy crossed the center line and collided head-on with a westbound 1999 International semi driven by Jeremy L. Johnston, 40, Winfield, Missouri.

Phelps was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Derfelt Funeral Home. EMS transported Johnston to the hospital in Joplin.

Phelps was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.
