
TOPEKA —Republican candidate for governor Derek Schmidt has named Katie Sawyer, a member of U.S. Senator Roger Marshall's staff, as his running mate, according to Schmidt's campaign website.
Sawyer, 38, from Inman earned her bachelor’s degrees in communications and international studies from Pittsburg State University and a master’s degree in strategic communications from Purdue University in Fort Wayne, Indiana, according to a media release from the Schmidt campain.
She, along with her husband, is a fourth-generation owner and operator of their family farm in McPherson County. They are also the parents of two young sons.
Sawyer was a journalist and editor of the McPherson Sentinel prior to working for Marshall. She also worked at McPherson College in marketing and business development.
