Child dies after trapped in house fire in Hays

ELLIS COUNTY —Authorities are working to determine the cause a fatal house fire in Hays.

Just after 3 p.m. Wednesday, the Hays Emergency Communication Center received a report of a house fire in the 100 Block of West 37th Street in Hays, according to a media release from the Hays Fire Department.

The Hays Fire Department along with the Ellis County Fire Department, Ellis County Emergency Medical Services, and the Hays Police Department were dispatched to the scene. While en route to the scene it was reported that a child was trapped inside the house.

Rescue efforts were initiated, and firefighters were able to locate and remove the child from the home.

Ellis County EMS transported the child to Hays Medical Center where the child later died from injuries.

Fire crews used multiple hand lines to extinguish the fire. The fire caused extensive damage to the home.

Authorities released no additional information early Wednesday evening.
