Fire Marshal: Fire damages 2 Kansas homes

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Authorities are still working to confirm the exact cause of a Saturday night fire at a home in Topeka.

Just after 7:30p.m. Saturday, crews responded to a fire at a home at 1406 SW Polk Street in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison. 

The fire had fully involved the two-story residence.  Firefighters began a defensive fire attack and the blaze spread to one additional house directly to the south, 1408 SW Polk, causing significant damage.

A preliminary investigation from the State Fire Marshal indicates the cause of the fire as undetermined; cause is more likely than not related to a wood burning stove, according to Harrison.  The occupants of the home escaped with no injures.

The estimated dollar loss on 1406 SW Polk was – $10,000.00; of which $5,000.00 is associated with structural loss and $5,000.00 is associated with content’s loss. The estimated dollar loss on 1408 SW Polk was – $15,000.00; of which $10,000.00 is associated with structural loss and $5,000.00 associated with content’s loss.

Working smoke detectors were not located within home at 1406 Polk, according to Harrison.
