SEDGWICK COUNTY — A former Kansas detective accused of mishandling cases involving child internet crimes is going to face a jury trial.
On Thursday 57-year-old Shawn McMahon, 57, Wichita, was arraigned and a jury is now scheduled to hear the case on November 30, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.
McMahon is charged with making false information and interference with law enforcement officer; Falsely reporting a felony, intending to obstruct.
In July the Judge determined there was enough evidence for McMahon to stand trial on accusations he failed to thoroughly investigate criminal complaints with the Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit in Wichita, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.
In December 2024, the Wichita Police Department was requested to investigate McMahon's conduct with the Exploited and Missing Children’s Unit. He served on a task force investigating internet crimes involving children.
Investigators from the Wichita Police Department’s Advanced Law Enforcement Response Team (ALERT) carried out the investigation, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.
McMahon was placed on leave from Wichita Police in July 2025.
