6-year-old Kan. boy remains hospitalized after shooting

LAWRENCE —A 6-year-old Kansas boy injured in a shooting August 5 in Lawrence remains hospitalized but is improving.

His aunt established a GoFundMe page to assist the family following the accident. On Wednesday, she reported doctors moved him from intensive care.

Doctors removed the tubes from his mouth on Monday and for the first time since the accident he was able to say, "hi mom." 

Just after 9:30p.m. August 5, police responded to report of a medical emergency at a residence in the 700 Block of West 25th Street in Lawrence, according to police spokesperson Patrick Compton

First responders found the boy suffering from a gunshot wound and immediately began rendering aid. EMS transported him to a hospital in critical condition.

Authorities continue the investigation of the incident  but do not believe foul play was involved. Police have not released additional details.
