Fire Marshal: 1 hospitalized after Kan. apartment complex fire

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Authorities are investigating the cause of Thursday morning fire in Topeka.

Just before 2:30a.m., fire crews responded to a the fire at an apartment complex at 3930 SW Twilight Drive in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.  Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke and flames coming from the two story building.

Firefighters assisted several occupants with evacuation. EMS transported one adult to a local hospital with non life-threatening injuries, according to Harrison.

The preliminary investigation indicates the fire started in the kitchen of apartment #207. Estimated dollar loss – $125,000.00; of which $100,000.00 is associated with structural loss and $25,000.00 associated with contents loss.

Working smoke detectors were not located within the structure of fire origin, according to Harrison.
