JUNCTION CITY, Kan. - The Junction City Lady Jays saw their historic 2020-2021 season come to a close on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Lawrence Free State Firebirds 50-26.
The Lady Jays were dealt a tough hand before tip-off, being without seniors Dorian Robinson and Lucy Rivera due to illness, and their absence proved to be significant.
Free State jumped out to an 11-0 lead to start the game, but JCHS climbed back to within 13-10 early in the second quarter before Free State would go on a 13-3 run to close the first half.
Mellana Davis tallied 20 of JC's 26 points in the loss. Arianna Gold netted 4 points and Ava Deguzman 2.
The loss ended a season in which JCHS saw seven victories, its most wins since 2013. It also ended the Lady Jays careers of three seniors who will go on to collegiate basketball at the community college level.
Junction City ends the year at 7-13 overall.
