Police K9 helps catch 22-year-old Kansas felon

BARTON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a Kansas felon on new charges after a Tuesday arrest.

Just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, an officer with the Great Bend Police Department conducted a traffic stop at 10th Street and Wilson Street for an equipment violation on a 2004 Chevrolet Silverado, according to a media release.

During the stop, police service dog Menta was deployed and conducted a free air sniff around the exterior of the vehicle. K-9 Menta indicated to the presence of illegal narcotics. A search of the vehicle was conducted. Police located controlled substances including marijuana, cocaine and drug paraphernalia.

Officers arrested Elijah Cheney, 22, and transported him to the Barton County Jail. He is being held on a $10,000 bond.
